A couple of weeks ago my 7 yr old grandson had a 102 fever Friday evening and night.... we gave him tylenol, the next day he was fine.

2 days later, my 2 1/2 yr old granddaughter did the same thing...

With them, it was just the one evening.....

If it keeps on, take him to the doctor, but it looks like you are doing the right thing.

If it were me, I'd check in with the doctor about a fever that high. Maybe I'm overly cautious, but I like to just talk with my doctor when it's over 102. It could be a virus or even an infection of some sort. Of course, you should give him plenty of fluids so he stays hydrated too! Hope your little guy gets well soon!

Your son had pneumonia a year ago. Is this the same thing or is it different?

Does he have a rash anywhere?
Can he speak coherently?

If you are worried, call your pediatrician and tell him/her what is going on. I would personally continue with the motrin and ensure that my child has plenty of liquids.

If you "pinch" his skin on the top of his hand, does it stay up? or does it go back down?? If it stays up? I would take him to the Urgent care to make sure he doesn't get dehydrated.

Good luck!

There are lots of viruses and infections that don't involve upper respiratory issues (runny nose, throat problems, coughing). My concern is that he is not drinking fluids. He really needs to. Water, herbal tea (no caffeine), broth/soup, even pedialyte, and stuff like chicken soup if he'll do it. It can help lower the temp as well as flush out whatever virus or infection is bothering him. Food is not as important, and sometimes when someone is under the weather they just don't have an appetite. But you must make him drink fluids.

You have quite a few posts about being worried and anxious about your sick kids. I think, when you see your pediatrician, you should get a really good list of things that require a doctor's visit or consultation, and things that don't. Also get a guideline of when you do something to break the fever, and when you don't. A fever is a sign of the body's immune system working, so you don't usually medicate it unless it's extremely high (102 or more), or if the child has a lot of aches (body aches, headaches, sore throat). Motrin and Tylenol don't fix the problem, so yes, the fever will go back up when the medication wears off. That's normal. If you do take him to see the doctor, avoid giving him any medications for 4-6 hours beforehand. You want the doctor to see the child the way he really is when he's sick.

Rest, motrin every 6-8 hours, keep him hydrated, and just let it run its course. He'll be fine.

A fever is the body's way of fighting an infection. I would avoid giving fever reducers unless the fever is making him too uncomfortable to sleep. Keep him comfortable, give him lots to drink and let him rest. Let the fever do it's job.

I agree with calling his dr. I got mono in high school and had no symptoms except swollen glands to begin with. It could be anything, or it could be nothing. A call/visit to your dr should help put your mind at ease.

Could be strep. I've had it twice this winter. Both times it was mostly just a fever that I had.

Could be mono.

Go to the doc.

He could have the flu and our pediatrician told us if there is any chance to take the kids in and get them tested for the flu regardless of how sick they were. It's too risky.

Maybe I'm a bit overly cautious myself but I'd check w/ his pedi, particularly since there's a history of pneumonia. Make sure he drinks and keep him hydrated

hope he feels better
