My daughter has been coughing., sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes for the past 3 weeks. I have taken her to the doctor twice and they said as long as she isn't running a feaver or has chest congestions I just have to wait it out. The cough has gotten worst and I am at a lost of what to do. I think that the doctors are hesitant to prescribe any medicine because of the problems they have been having with the over the counter meds.
Does anyone have any alternative things I could do to help her out. Open to all suggestions

What can I do next?

My daughter is onto her second week of the same thing, although it is much, much better. No mucous coming out of her nose any more, but she still has that yucky post nasal drip cough. Here is something one of my RN friends told me to do... it makes NOOOOOO sense to me why it does (I am an RN too), but I have tried it 3 times now and it works like a charm every time! My daughter even aked for "the socks" the other night!

Rub Vicks Vabor Rub into your daughters' feet, cover them with a pair of socks and put her to bed. That's it! I was told that she would sleep through the night without congestion or coughing, and she DID! Every time!

Good luck!

First, could it be allergies since she has watery eyes? Just a thought.

Secondly, if it is a cold, we found a few things that helped.

1. Saline mist for the nose helps to clear it up. The kids hate getting it squirted in their noses but it helped clean out their sinuses.

2. A humidifier at night with vicks vapo steam in the little cup that comes with the humidifiers.

3. As weird as this sounds, if she is coughing at night, try putting Vicks Vaoprub on her feet. It is supposed to help reduce the cough. I thought it was crazy at first but it really did help. We just rubbed it on after his bath and then had him wear footie pajamas.

Good luck.

My 3 year old son is on zyrtec and has been for almost 2 years. your little one may have allergies. my son coughs so bad at night he vomits and none of us get any sleep. when his cough is especially bad, we give him vicks vapor rub on his chest, in addition to zyrtec.

If it really is just a cold there is no drug or medication that a doctor can prescribe to make it go away. It's viral and it really does just need to run it's course. If they gave you a Rx every time you had a cold, when you really need those drugs to fight off something they wouldn't work because you will have developed a tolerance. My 5 mo old has been sick for the past 3 wks too. There really isn't much you can do. Have you tried taking her into the shower and letting her inhale the steam. It will help to clear her breathing. Put a vaporizor/humidifier in her room. But other then that there really isn't much.

No miracles for this stuff unfortunately, but have you tried running a cool mist humidifier? I can't believe your doctor is being of so little help, Good Luck:)

My advice is to slow down all you are doing and stay home until she feels better. I would make sure things are calmer and more comforting than usual and give her body time to rest and recover. I give my children EmergenC vitamins and Grape Seed Extract in some juice. I make sure they have lots of fluids and healthy foods and I mostly just let them rest as much as possible. Their little bodies need it! Good luck,
A.
