Sick 2 Year Old - Gresham,OR

My Daughter had a high fever 2 weeks ago and it subsided last Friday (lasted 6 days). She jsut turned 2 last wednesday and on Friday received her second MMR and Chicken Pox shots.

At ~11:00 PM that Friday she woke up vomiting. She was up until ~3:00 AM. On Saturday she was still showing signs of nausia but seemed to be fine later in the day.

She slept fine on Saturday and was her usual self on Sunday but then at ~4:30 AM this morning (Monday) she was vomiting once again. She can't hold down food/drink so i am giving her a couple sips of pedialite every 15 minutes and she seems to be holding it down.

She is very lethargic which we have not seen with her before but she HAS NOT HAD A FEVER what so ever during this vomit filed weekend.

The Dr.'s advice nurse says we're doing the right thing and it is most likely a virus but as new parents are we are worring about this.

The one thing that has changed recently is that we moved from our condo to a very old house and i am thinking that an alergy to some mold in this 1920s house may be a contributing factor.

Any Suggestions?

Could she be constipated? If her insides are already full, there would be no room for food. This has happened to my son, I took him in for X-rays, and $700 later we found out it was nothing more than constipation. We used a mild laxative and he was fine in no time.

R.,

You may want to take her into the doctor/ER to make sure she is ok, especially after her shots and having a fever 2 weeks prior to that. You never know if it's a reaction to the shots. My ped mentioned kids can have reactions up T. weeks after.

You are doing the right things for now. And you can't tear your walls to see if there is mold or not in her room right now--its toooooo cold. I would not use a humidifier. I would check what she is eating, perhaps food intake is contributing to the vomiting. Perhaps a day on toast and jello, or chicken soup will help her settle her stomach and you can start from there.

And trust the Nurse it will help you relax. If her temperature goes back up then you need to worry, or if she can't keep the pedialite down at all. Those are worry points.

I don't think allergies would show up as fever/vomiting. It could be virus AND her shots (make some kids sick). Keep up the hydration and I also found that lukewarm/almost cool baths helped mine feel better and reduced fever... also relaxed them (they liked the tub).
Take good care.

There is a nasty flu bug out there and chances are pretty good that your daughter caught it. With that said, if you are concerned about molds, take a bucket of warm water, add about a 1/4 of bleach to it and wipe down all your walls, window sills, windows, make sure that your bathroom is well ventilated and that you wipe all the surfaces down in there.

You can get an ionizing air purifier that will help clear the air of any mold spores, dust and other things that float in the air. You will need to vaccuum your rugs daily and damp mops your floors. Don't use vaporizers if you suspect mold.

Mold or other allergies wouldn't cause the nausea as a rule... but if it continues, go see your doctor. Long term nausea and not keeping what you're feeding her down is not a good thing.

I wish you and her well!!

maybe lots of people have already told you this but there is a nasty stomach virus going around. We all had it this weekend including my son who is almost 2. Give her a few days and if she is still feeling bad take her in to get checked out.

i agree with the others - and unfortunately virus can take up to 2 weeks to get rid of. just keep an eye on her tears/wet diapers to make sure she is not dehydrated. popsicles, ice chips, pedialyte - all great forms of liquids.

Mould allergies usually result in respiratory illnesses, like coughing, colds that don't go away, etc. so it probably is just a virus. I would say that if she is still vomiting by today, then take her to the doctor. But you are definitely doing the right thing giving her pedialite, etc. The big worry would be dehydration, but you seem to be handling that with the drink. Hope she feels better soon!

This is so nerve-wracking to have a young child so sick. My 4yo grandson recently had a go-round with a stomach virus, possibly on top of a separate respiratory infection. The poor little guy vomited for the better part of two weeks, and visibly lost weight. His parents were poised to rush him to an emergency room, they were so worried. But the advice nurse at his ped's office helped keep them reassured that he was "just" very sick, and would get over it.

Sure enough, after 2 weeks, the barfing stopped, and a week later, he started eating voraciously to regain the lost weight, plus keep up with a growth spurt.

The Pedialite sounds like a good plan. If the fever is gets really high or she shows signs of dehydration, you'll want to get further instructions from the doc's office. I'd be inclined to call them about the lethargy too. That could be unusual, though it may well be that she's just feeling really sick.

Good luck, R.. I hope you'll keep us posted as she recovers.

It's possibel she is allergic to mold but more likely that she is having a reaction to her shots. Most docs will tell you that there is no bad reaction to these, but whop whants to say, sorry, what I gave your kid is making them sick. There are plenty of cases of children getting sick for those shots, especially the MMR, so it's a reason to think twice about giving your baby any more of that one. There's a doctor over at The Herb Shoppe that gives a great lecture on shots & is a pediatrician as well, I's go see her.

Haven't read the other posts... I know most people will tell you it's not related to the MMR but I believe it very well could be. My advise is to get through this, keep checking in with your doctor. Then, read this book: "The Vaccine Safety Manual" by Neil Z. Miller (can be found at the Library, book store, amazon, etc.). After reading and learning more, you may decide to skip any other MMR shots in the future.

Is it possible that she is reacting poorly to the immunizations? Since she got them right after being sick, her immunity was probably down and it's possible she reacted to the shots badly. We're all about slow vax in our house...taking the shots slowly, and spaced out...and never when she's sick. Can they check for a bad reaction?

There is a horrible stomach bug going around right now and she's probably got it. Just make sure if she has vomiting that you wait minimum of 90 minutes after and episode before you offer her any liquids. It also seems to take a while for their systems to get back on track. It took my daughter over a week to really start eating and she's still being very choosy when she normally eats everything. When she does feel like eating again offer her yogurt in addition to the BRAT diet to help get her gut back on track.
