Just so you know, when I was little, every winter I was sick with pneumonia and/or bronchitis, for several years at least. I grew out of it and now am rarely sick (knock on wood). :) If you're worried, you should maybe get a second opinion, but just wanted to let you know that he'll most likely grow out of this, even though it sucks in the meantime.

I had my son, 13 mo.old, gotten a flu shot at age 12 mo. And 2 days after that, he got bronchitis, which was treated with antibiotics (they even weren't certain if it was not phemonia). I wonder if flu shot could make preconditions for catching respiratory deseases.

Wish you the best for your precious one.

I have a three year old who gets sick all of the time too. He has had pneumonia four times, bronchitis five times, upper respiratory six times, RSV once, numerous ear infections, five sets of tubes, and a tonsillectomy. Believe me, I understand. He does have asthma and he has allergies. It is common for pneumonia to lead into bronchitis. I am sorry that you are going through this. I would check him for asthma & allergies. I live in Oconomowoc and he sees the doctors at Childrens. They are great. Slow moving office but great otherwise. Every time he would get sick he would land in the hospital as his oxygen saturation would dip into the eighties. I used to spend a majority of this time crying. Check it out as there are medications that will help your child if they do have asthma. Good luck to you

A friend whose child had respiratory issues could not be held by someone who had been smoking (i.e. the person needed to change their clothing first -- depending how much they smoke and how great his sensitivity a shower might be needed to get hair clean), could not go to a house where there was smoking -- not that anyone smoked around the child, but she could not tolerate smoke residue -- until your son gets fully over all of his respiratory issues; I'd follow those same rules.

You're right to worry about Asthma, but they won't be able to diagnose until after he is over the Bronchitis. To prevent his getting Asthma, I would be really strict about the smoke issue while he is healing. Also, because he shows the sensitivity; you might want to work with your parents going forward to minimize exposure.

K.,
I had the same problem with my daughter, whenever we visited my mom (2 hours away) my daughter would get sick after each visit. My mom never smoked in the house while we were there but did when we were not. I was finally convinced that the smoke that lingered in everything at moms house was the cause of my daughter getting sick. I told my mom that we could no longer come for overnight visits unless she stopped smoking in the house. She did finally stop doing that and now my daughter who is 5 and my 1 year old son have no problems after we have a visit. It is always okay to get a second opinion, but asking your parents not to smoke in the house and air it out before you visit maynot be a bad idea. Ultimately your daughters health should be the top priority even for grandma and grandpa, thats how my mom felt. It may take him some time to totally kick his illness right now but if he is sick often after a visit I would for sure say something to your parents.
Good Luck

Do you know if they air out the house before you come. If they don't the smoke sits and can affect your son. They don't have to smoke in front of your son.

this is not medical advice, but my 20 month daughter had pneumonia a couple of weeks ago too. i thought it went away, but now has a cough. they told me to bring her back in for a check up. the bronchitis could just be something that happened because the pneumonia didnt go away. it may be a coincidence that you were at your parents house. it may take a while for your baby to totaly get better. so finish all the medicines that your doctor gives for your son. a lot of people stop using it after a couple of days because the baby gets better.

Is this the only time he has been sick? My 2 year old has been having problems with bad colds since he was 6 months old. He had 3 bouts of croup w/i 3 months with a bad cough after. I had to take him to the emergency room back in Nov. When I followed up w/ my pediatrician she said it sounds like RAD (reactive airway disease). It is similar to asthma, but not as serious and kids outgrow it. He is now on Singulair for the winter. He has only had one minor cold since. If this is the only time he has been sick then it is probably bronchitis and not asthma. Ask your pediatrician just to be sure.

My son who is now 4 years old went through things like that until just this year. He does however have asthma and allergies. I would check into an allergy doc... have them test for allergies and he may be allergic something in your mom's house. We live just south of Madison and the UW docs are great! My son was always sick and in and out of hospitals for the first 3 1/2 years of his life. I think *knock on wood* he has grown out of it. Does your son by chance attend daycare? It is so much easier to children to be sick and contract these kinds of illnesses through daycare enviroments! Good luck to you! I know it's rough.
