Let me start by saying I am very "anti" anti-biotic unless it is for sure 100% necessary. My 3 kids have been battling a cough for about 2-3 weeks. It came with a slight runny nose but no fever and no other symptoms. It started off dry, got very productive sounding after a week or so and now has been less frequent and back to dry. Now tonight my middle daughter spiked a fever of 101.5 and says her throat is hurting when she does cough. Her lungs sound clear to me but obv I am not a dr. I would like to avoid going to urgent care because I don't want to expose everyone to even MORE germs but the fever is weirding me out and I always fear a secondary bacterial infection after a virus. However, at the same time, I think that maybe it could just be that she got hit with another virus right behind the one that caused the cough. We were at my friend's house 4 days ago and her daughter had a sore throat. Do you think it is safe to wait a day or so and see how it pans out? She was seemingly fine this evening besides the lingering cough, in fact I didn't even know that she had a fever until I was putting them to bed and felt her face with my face.

What can I do next?

The fever so late in the game and the persistent cough point out towards a bacterial infection (sounds like some kind of bronchitis) that developed as a result of prolonged period of respiratory unwellness of some sort (viral or bacterial).
Treat the fever above 102 and go to the doctor as soon as you can, I do not see a reason for urgent care. Regular doc will suffice.
Prolonged infections cause tissue scarring and they exhaust the immune system - so, taking antibiotics is not all that bad. Much worse would be to develop some sort of super-infection because the weakened immune system cannot fight it off and to end up on some very serious antibiotics.
I am not a fan of drugs but they are needed sometimes in the world we live where bacterias have evolved to be very resistant and our bodies cannot fight them off on their own at times.
Good luck.

with the fever and the hurting throat I would say strep... in that case I would break down and go with the meds. It just faster recovery. As long as your kids dont take antibiotics for everything, that one time will heal quickly and it will help her. I wouldnt go to urgent care but let it go till morning if you can get a appointment.
I opted out of meds for my sons lingering bronchial infection and remnant ear infection because he was pretty much over it and it wasnt that inflamed. You always have the power of choice. I would at least get a strep test done. Just to be sure it is or isnt.

There has been a lot of strep everywhere. With strep you usually have white patches on the back of the throat. Strep is highly contagious. Your daughter spiking a fever is good. That means her body is fighting the infection. However with Strep it can get extremely difficult to swallow thereby making it difficult to stay hydrated. She can become quickly dehydrated with a fever that hight. I would give her some juice pops is she can stand it. I think it is safe to wait a day but she has to drink. You did not say how old she is? That makes a big difference. The very young and the very old become dehydrated much quicker. Google strep throat... gain some information... look at some pictures of strep throat.. I think there are plenty out there. Strep bears watching because I think that it can possibly affect the heart in some cases. But do the research because I am trying to remember after several decades of any dealings with strep throat. Mayoclinic.com is a site that I always trust. Good luck and let us know how she feels.

That sounds EXACTLY like us, and we have been waiting it out! I went to my doc the other day for something else and he said that by 3 weeks it will have pretty much ran its course. I didn't want to jump on anit-biotics either and also didn't want to waste a co-pay on something viral! I know that we all had the sore throat, either from coughing ot it just being dry. I took hot baths to get the steam, for my sinuses and throat, and tried to drink much much more, I have been using lozenges as well. Only you know your kids, but if they are coughing up different colors, call the doc!

I would probably go to the doctor and have them give a diagnosis then opt in or out of the meds, however with no insurance, I would have to go to urgent care since I don't know how to get a regular appointment anymore.

Myself, yes. Unless im bleeding to death or have cut my own arm off I do not go to the doc. My kids, are a different story. I am not a "wait it out" M. and if they are sick and a antibiotic can help them I do it. I don't make decisions on my own as far as their health goes. I leave that up to my pediatrician. Its is probably just a little virus but why risk it?

Sounds like a trip to the doc is necessary. After 2-3 weeks its time. 2-3 days a different story. We are dealing with some virus in our house but it seems to last a few days so we've been in the wait and see mode as well. Tis the season now with all these bugs and viruses...however, I think she should be checked out.
