I am looking for some material suggestions for shower curtains. I have to take some time to go to our local fabric shop but was looking for some info.
I would like to make a shower curtain liner and was curious if anyone has and what fabric you recommend...what you found held up to the shower environment.
Any info is appreciated.
Thank you!!

our liner is a tight woven.. water repellent fabric and our outer curtain is a sheer. It does absorb the water, but it doesn't leak through and dries very quickly..

Good luck. I don't know where my husband got it.. but it's nice because we can throw it in the laundry!

For years I sewed so much for my family and household.
Have not had that machine out for years tho.
I would not even begin to know what to recommend for a fabric for shower curtain liner.
However there are wonderful fabric stores out there, Joanne comes to mind, and the sales persons are both kindly and most helpful.
I am sure they would point you in the right direction for choice of fabric.
Seems like we used to use a stiff nylon for such things.
Anyway, good for you...nice to hear of someone doing such a thing in this busy throwaway world today.
Best wishes and God bless

Hi,
I've made mine for the last several years. I found that a 50/50 cotton/poly blend holds up the best. While I love all cotton, it holds the moisture longer and will succumb to shower flora more quickly. I have 2 so I can hang a new one when the other is being washed. They should last 3-4 years before you need to even think about replacing.

I have a liner from Crate and Barrel, also sold at Bed, Bath Beyond I think- that is completely AWESOME, can be thrown in laundry and comes out good as new every time- lasted a VERY long time before I eventually got a new one. Can be sprayed down for occasional spots w/bleach/cleaner or just thrown in warm/hot cycle with whites to be cleaned. SOOOOO much better than sticky, filmy plastic liners! I have told everyone of my friends/family to get it.

PS-We use our old one to line our car when buying mulch/garden items, loading up bikes (no grease in car!) or for blanket on grass for kids to sit on,etc. I highly recommend it,costs about $14, it's white and a light, soft nylon material ( I think!) Good luck!

Hi A.,

I'd like to sing the praises of NYLON! My shower liners are made by EXCELL HOME FASHIONS of 100% nylon. I purchased them through JCPenny a number of years ago. They are not see-through so I do not use a curtain; it allows more light into the shower. They are fast-drying. They are mold and mildew resistant so they do not need to be bleached. Since mold and mildew do not grow on nylon, the curtains do not contain any chemicals. I bought two; one to use while the other is being laundered. They are laundered on the gentle cycle with mild detergent, NO bleach. They are excellent!
