Should My Baby Be Kicking by Now????

Ok... yes I am paranoid about all aspects of this pregnancy, and no it is not my first :o( I have one healthy 2yr old, who during my pregnancy with him, he started kicking at about 15-16 weeks, and never stopped. I will be 18 weeks this monday and still no out right or frequent movements. We have had an 8 week ultrasound, and just yesterday heard the heartbeat, so I am not worried about that. We have our "big" ultrasound on the 7th as well. I think I may have felt a slight ping here or there, but nothing defined! Any advise or stories of late kickers are more than welcome...

~~Side note, I am so darn paranoid because my neice was stillborn last year at 6 months... she had downs, and the reason why my sister never felt movement was because her legs never developed properly... I am praying for a healthy baby more than anything in this world, and have much faith, however I AM SCARED TO DEATH!!~~

What can I do next?

Alot of woman don't feel movement until around 22 weeks. but here is my dime store opinion. Relax i think because of the other ordeal in your family the thought is there. So your mind starts going thinking the worst (which is understandable) so its making you tense and that will hinder what you feel. Just stay relaxed and calm lay still and hopefully you will feel something if not you still have a few more weeks until 22 weeks. Good luck!

E.,
I have two children and understand your paranoia! However I don't think it is too unusual that you haven't felt your new baby kick yet. You will probably start to feel him/her in the next few weeks. I had placenta previa with my first. I was very lucky that I had no complications due to it, but because of the placement I couldn't always feel my baby move. There are lots of reasons that are not problems and it is probably just too soon for this one! And keep praying for your happy healthy baby!

HI E.,
I did not feel my son kick until I was 22 weeks pregnant. Reason was that the placenta was on top and my son was kicking the placenta and that is why I couldn't feel anything. I am sure everything is fine but it is definitely scary when you know you should be feeling something. Good luck with your pregnancy.

all babies are different.. my daughter kicked early and more consistently.. she had certain times a day when she woudl do a little dance and then she would settle down and be still.

My son kicked later.. and when he started kicking he was like a jumble of arms and legs..he moved and moved.

dont worry some kids move more in utero.. some kids more more after they are born.

E.,
I remember having the same worries as you... A close friend of mine and I were pregnant at the same time (our due dates only a week apart) and she felt her baby start kicking very early (close to 14 weeks, I think). I didn't feel my baby start kicking until closer to 18 or 19 weeks so I was very frightened and convinced something was wrong (even though I had heard the heartbeat on many occasions). My baby eventually did start kicking and is now a perfectly healthy 21 month old! So I understand your concern (especially if you've watched a family member go through such trauma) but I want to reassure you that it's perfectly normal to not yet feeling kicking and, remember, every pregnancy is different :) I think I even remember reading that some moms don't feel kicking until 22 weeks. Best of luck!

as hard as it may be, you can't compare your pregnancies...i know, i will do it too, but every pregnancy is different. i didn't start feeling my dt until i was almost 20 wks. the baby could just be in the part of your uterus all bundled in the corner and you just can't feel it yet. i'm sorry to hear about your neice's baby that is awful and of course that is in the back of your mind, just try to breathe...
hope i've helped...

I could not feel my baby kick until I was 27 weeks! Turns out my placenta is between the baby and my skin, so it absorbded his kicks till he was big enough to hit/kick my sides. A good friend of mine was the same way.
You will see your baby kicking like crazy at the ultrasound.

When I was pregnant with my 1st son (3 years ago) I hardly ever felt him move. It was well after my 5th month before i started feeling movement regular. I know I just about drove everyone crazy including myself! I would leave on my lunch hour to go the the Dr.'s office to have a doppler put to my stomach ( My Dr.s office was 24 miles away round trip). Then near the end of my pregnancy I thought when will the kicking stop! With my second son (1 years old) I felt him moving much earlier. Both of my pregancies were completely diffrent in just about every way.
congratulations! and enjoy this time. I think its the best. Sometimes I wish I was pregnant again just so that I could eat and not worry about getting huge. Everyone use to tell me how cute I was pregnant. Now, these days having a stomach is not cute anymore. (LOL)

When I was pregnant with my son (he is 7 months old now), I remember not really feeling any strong movement until after my big ultrasound at 18 weeks. I think there were little pings here and there, but nothing really distinct till after my big ultrasound. I remember seeing the baby moving on the screen and being relieved that he was moving since I hadn't really felt anything. So I think you are ok, but I understand being paranoid after your niece was stillborn, I would be too. Also, people have told me that babies start moving at different times, so that may be why your first started kicking earlier. I'm sure you'll feel movement soon and will probably be eased at your ultrasound when you see movement!

Relax! I know it's a hard thing to do, but remember every pregnancy is different. I didnt feel my daughter moving around, but when they showed the ultrasound she was sommersaulting all over the place, then at about 6 months she went into position and never moved out of it and still very little movement. The farther along I got the less she moved. She is 2 now and she is absolutely fine. Knows how to count to 20 and almost all her abc's and VERY hyper running all over the place! Good luck!!

I only felt my first at around 21 weeks. I too remember wondering why wasn't I feeling anything.... I do think it had something to do with where the placenta attached or something. Try not to think about it too much. Easier said than done i'm sure!
