Hi, my son who is 15 months old was playing at this bounce house..........he was walking across and I couldnt get to him fast enough to catch his fall when he was trying to get out, he fell on a mat on his leg but was screaming.........at first he wouldn't put any weight on his leg (i cant tell where his leg hurts if its his knee, hip or foot) but then after a about 20 min he would try and walk and then after a few steps he would just fall.........we paged the DR last night, he said that if hes able to walk then it would be ok to wait to see what happens when he wakes up today......well he is limping but not fussy at all......anyway Im wondering if i should still take him to urgent care to get x-rays? I mean I don't think there is a broken bone, but i dont want it to get any worse. ughhh i feel awful for not catching his fall :(

Thanks

What can I do next?

i agree with the previous poster. i would try to gentle squeeze down the leg, rotate the knee and ankle a bit, etc. If he isnt really freaking out about any of it, then i would worry. if it was broken he would probably be screaming even today! it sounds like he may have pulled a muscle or sprained something.

Don't try to play doctor by pressing and/or rotating anything, just take him in for x-rays. You don't know what to feel for and may inadvertently do more damage. You really should find out if it's broken, so it can be properly taken care of. Otherwise, he may end up with a limp for the rest of his life and a certain case of arthritis later on.

Don't feel bad for not catching him mom, you can't be everywhere.

First off - this may be the first uncaught fall, but it certainly won't be the last! Cut yourself some slack - it IS part of growing up. (Especially for boys.) =)

That said, if he's not complaining, I would personally be comfortable taking a wait and see approach. X-rays seem benign, but it IS gamma irradiation, and you don't want to get any of that if you don't have to. The younger, the more susceptible to the effects. And, the cost in time and money isn't small either.
I would try to locate the source of his pain. Does it hurt when you push on it? Or only when you move it? Or only when HE moves it? Is it painful in one specific spot (called "point tenderness")? With point tenderness, I would probably put in a CALL to the clinic for advice. Otherwise it's quite safe to wait a few days and see if it passes.

However, if you're nervous, give the clinic a call. It seems the doc is comfortable telling you to wait it out, so it doesn't hurt to ask again if it gives you peace of mind. =)

I would take him in just to be on the safe side. When my son was three, he and my nephew were horsing around and my nephew fell on my son's leg. He walked on it some that day and some the next day, but he eventually would only crawl around. He never complained that it hurt but he would not walk or put pressure on it. I finally took him to the ER and he had a fractured tibia. Talk about feeling bad! I would go just in case...it may be nothing but you never know.

I do understand how you feel. Parents and grandparents are suppose to be "all protective with eyes in the back of their heads and ESP"etc..., in a perfect world maybe?? Don't beat yourself up too much, though. I am an x ray professional, for 30 years, a mother and grandmother. My opinion is that it never hurts to get an injury checked out, especially in children. You would rather have the doctor say that there is nothing wrong than to say you should have brought them in sooner and maybe avoided some future problem. But do continue to monitor the child and if there is any doubt take them for an exam.

I wouldn't take him to urgent care if your regular pedi can do xrays. But I would have it checked out.

When our youngest was 2 he woke up one morning and would not walk on his foot. I freak out because I did not remember him getting hurt the day before. We were away and drove back 5 hours, then waited 6 hours in the ER, they did xrays and said that he must've hurt his foot the day before because there was some bruising on the foot. They put him in the splint, just for him to get up the next day and run like nothing happened. Boys.......things will happen with them, do not blame yourself. MY husband broke his legs many times as a child and said that he could not walk on it at all and it was VERY swollen the next day.

Take him for x-rays. When my daughter was 3 she fell in dance class. She told me her foot hurt but still walked on it, it wasn't swollen, and didn't react at all when I touched her foot. She limped though and at first I thought she was looking for attention but this went on for 2 weeks. I finally brought her in and low and behold my child had a broken foot. The doctor said it was quite possible that initially it was only a stress fracture but it developed into a break. :( So, I'd take him in to be on the safe side.

On Friday my daughter fell at a friend's house while playing tag. She cried for about an hour, but the mother of the family didn't even think it serious enough to call me about it and didn't mention it until the next day.
I figured she just bruised it b/c she wasn't complaining about it that bad and she could move it. My hubby insisted that we take her to CareNow and I did. Turns out that she broke her wrist. I'm glad I took her in!
Your son is probably fine, but if you would make you feel better, I'd take him in.
I'm not trying to scare you. I know you're new at this, I just want you to know that they don't always scream and cry with a break.

Children's bones are what they refer to as "green" kinda like stick that has not hardened you can bed it but it still wont snap. Bone of babies dont break as often and someone who is older either. With that being said, I have seen many parents whose children had an accident, it was tender, some swollen and some not, that have waited to take them to have them assessed. Several times a week had past and there was still pain and tenderness......but use was not an issue and the children were carrying on as normal. In a few cases the bones were broken. There are other physiological reasons while one with a suspected broken bone should seek medical attention and if it is truly broken and it is not set properly, it wont heal properly and that could possibly lead to other issues in the future. For you peace of mind and your babies well being, get an appt and have a xray...... :)

I've been in your shoes! My daughter was 14 months hurt her leg on the playground and acted the same way! We went the next day for x-rays and she had fractured her femur jsut above the knee in the growth plate! They said that it may affect the growth of that leg which terrified me but she is now 10 and the tallest in her class - no issues at all. They put her in a removable cast for 4-6 weeks (she didn't have to sleep in it).
Probably not the answer you want to hear but I would suggest getting x-rays and putting your mind to rest! I pray for the best for your little one!

Yes, take him in for x-rays! This happened with a friend of mine and her daughter at 18mos old. She fell off of the couch and broke her arm - but they didn't realize it until the next day when she was still complaining about her arm hurting. They took her to the doc, who told them she had broken her arm (close to her elbow) and she would need surgery to have 2 pins put in for at least 6-8 weeks to correct the break. Oh boy - you can bet they will never hesitate again if they think something may be broken!

Best of luck to you. I hope your baby boy is ok :)

I'm glad you found out and were able to get treated. Please don't beat yourself up about it. Kids get hurt by accidents all the time & we can't always be there. You did the right thing. Best.

If you haven't taken him to urgent care I wouldn't go there for x-rays. Even if they take a clear x-ray they will most likely refer you to your orthopedist. I would just start there because he will want his own x-ray. I would try Randal Troop, MD ###-###-#### at Plano Orthopedics to see if they can fit you in. He is rated one of the top docs and fabulous. Also, Troy Diehl, DO or Dan Maurer, DO in Frisco should be able to fit you in and they are both very good orthopedists.
