Should I Pay My Nanny for Vacation Taken at Same Time as Mine

My nanny is wonderful, she cares for our 5 month old baby M-F 8am-5pm. She is always so nice, agreeable, and flexible if we need her for extra hours or weekends. She is paid for holidays. I asked her when she woud like to schedule her two weeks of vacation, she said she'll just take vacation whenever I take vacation. Should I pay her during vacation, given that she will take vacation at the same time that I do Or maybe it doesn't matter. My first child and first nanny, so don't know what the protocol is. really appreciate some feedback, thank you!!

You are so blessed to have that nanny do all you can do to keep her happy so you have her for a very long time as long as you need her.

Yep. If you want to keep her, and it sounds like you do.

Having her take vacation the same time that you do is actually a huge bonus for you, because that means you aren't paying twice (her paid vacation, plus daycare while she's gone, or having to use up sickdays or UTO).

If she's reeeally fantastic, try and do everything you can afford to keep her feeling appreciated. The difference between a job, and a job with a great company. Presents on b-days and cold hard cash bonuses over the holidays. A giftcard for no reason. If she drinks coffee, a pound of coffee and a mug with your baby's handprint for valentines day or you child's birthday/or half birthday. You're not trying to bribe her or buy her off (you don't want to be doing these more then once a month, once every few months is FINE, ...unless you're independently wealthy, then that's another matter)... just the little things that make ANY employee feel appreciated by their boss or company.

So you know, she will be being approached by other families...especially as your child starts playing more outside. I'm young, and I interact and play with my son at the park & out in public (restaurants, beaches, stores, etc.)... and I get approached at least once a month by families to see if I'm available, or might be in the future, as a part-time, full-time, or live-in nanny for their family. It bumps up to at least once a week during school holidays. So you want to keep her feeling appreciated and secure with YOUR family.

Yes. always give paid vacations. N=My daycare parents have to pay me if they leave on vacation. just like any other job that has paid vacation. J.

Yes, pay her. My nanny also accomodates us and generally takes her vacations when we do. We always pay her for this time.

If you love her and want to keep her definitely consider paying her vacation time. Being your nanny is her full time occupation and she would get vacation benefits if she worked for another company. I believe it is standard practice to pay vacation time but I'm not positive. Congrats on your little one!

If you are going on vacation and not needing her services for a week, it would be right to pay her. If she were asking for time off and you were having to make arrangements to cover for her then it would make sense not to pay her unless it is in her contract that she gets paid vacation time.

When I was a nanny if I was asked to come with the family on vacation, and of course I would be working, and I chose not to then I also did not get paid.

If she is just trying to coordinate her vacation with yours, I don't see why you wouldn't pay her.

My belief is that a good nanny is hard to find. If you have someone that you feel is comptent and your son enjoys, then show your appreciation by paying for her vacation, or part of it, if you can afford it. The only thing I would suggest is that you should take into account the amount of time that she has been working with you just when you are determining her vacation compensation, just as your employer does when assessing your accrued vacation time. This will show her that you are grateful for what she is doing and give her reason to stay loyal to your employ.

Having been a professional Nanny for many years the answer is YES! Your Nanny should be paid 2 weeks vacation. The fact that she's taking it when YOU have vacation is to your advantage. Otherwise you'd be seeking childcare for the time she would be away. I also recommend you have an employment contract with your Nanny that clearly outlines all these issues so there aren't any miscommunications or hard feelings in the future. i.e. vacation, sick time? will she be paid? guaranteed hours, etc...

i say "YES"!i was a nany for 10 years and the nicer the family the longer you have a great person you trust to watch your children plus paying vacation time is also very buisness like and the more proffesional the deal is the better.
