Should I Go to the Doctor? TMI

Last week Tuesday I was walking down our basement stairs and lost my footing. I fell down the stairs and landed hard on my butt. It hurt so bad. I laughed and I cried. I didn't go to the doctor because I didn't think they could do anything. I am not bruised that I can tell without embarrasingly asking someone else to look but right where my tailbone ends it is so painful. Today... a week and a day later I can still barely sit. I am ok if I stand all day but I work at a desk so I sit most of the time. Has anyone else experienced this? My mom (who I work with so she can tell it hurts) said I should go to the doctor, but can they even do anything? How long will this last. Ouch!

What can I do next?

You should go and have an xray and to follow up in case it's not healing properly. And there's always pain medication :)

i can't think of one good reason NOT to go to the doctor. it may well be that there's nothing to be done for this, but wouldn't it still be best to know? and to get pain meds if you need 'em?

Get it checked out. Your spine extends past your hips and you really don't want to take any chances. Maybe they can't "do" anything, but they may have medication to help, or some sort of spinal/hip support that you can't get over the counter.

my money is on a broken coccyx...your doctor should be able to take an X-RAY and see what's going on...if it is broken they can give you a doughnut tube to sit on to allow it to heal.

You NEED to go to the doctor. You might have cracked your pelvis too...

OUCH. So sorry to hear! Yup sounds like tailbone.coccyx injury...
Def see a doc just to make sure nothing else is damaged.
At work use a pillow or doughnut pillow(might be bought at pharmacy) and when you sit at desk try to lean forward so you don't put too much weight on tailbone. Normally I'd say ice it right away but since it's been a week... maybe try icy hot and see if that help the pain at all.
Good Luck,
P
ETA: the least doc can do is also write a note saying you shouldn't sit for long periods of time etc and prescribe pain killers.

Yes, you should be seen. If you cannot do a normal, everyday activity like sitting without pain, you should get medical attention now. Even though everything might look okay on the outside, you cannot tell what's going on inside without medical examination and tests.

True, you're still healing, but why take a chance with your pelvis and spine?

Our daughter got a compression fracture last fall. She initially went about her business but when she did go for treatment, her doctors ordered several tests, which confirmed broken vertebrae. Her pain has continued, and now surgery is being suggested.

Of course I'm not saying this is what's going on with you. Rather, I'm sharing this story only to illustrate that just because you're up and moving doesn't mean you're okay.

I don't know your age, but keep in mind that healing can be more complicated and healing times longer as we age, so don't delay in seeking treatment.

Good luck and hope it's not too serious.

I think it would be worth a visit to the doctor. They may want to xray to ensure you didn't chip, slip, or break anything. They can also help the swelling with a steroid dose pack.

If you have a local pharmacy that carries medical supplies, pick up either a donut pillow or a coccyx pillow. It will help redistribute your weight so that you don't have as much pressure on that area.

I'm not sure if you're still within the time frame where icing would help.

I hope you feel better soon.

The coccyx bone is so painful when injured. You should consider getting an x-ray to be sure its not a bad break.

I would suggest a very soft pillow to sit on but have your doctor check it out. Sitting could be making it worse.

It can't hurt to have it checked out.

A few years ago, I was roller skating and fell. I broke my tailbone and got chipped something in my elbow. Both issues.. can't really do anything about them but let them heal but it was very painful.

I am still wavering on going back to the Dr. now because I have been sick with a sinus infection and my cough has been so severe, I swear I have a cracked rib. I have broken a rib before and this feels just like that. Same scenario... nothing they can do. Time heals. I do have some lose dose anti-flammatory meds from my Dr. for my gout that acts up a time or two per year and that seems to be helping.

Best wishes on your recovery.

Sounds like the tailbone got broken when you fell. I did once a long time ago on steps outside a cousin's house. It hurt like you know what and it took forever to heal. I broke it again when my daughter was born. Not too much you can but take care and be careful.

Talk to the doctor and see if you can get a note.

There are times when I have to sit a certain way or else it is uncomfortable and that is many years ago.

Definitely time to go to the doc-past actually. A friend of mine fell on ice, hard. She did not have a long jacket to cushion her fall a bit. She did fracture her tailbone and luckily it healed on its own. But you should get it checked. I don;t think a regularly bruising would still hurt so much you can't even sit.

Sounds like a cracked tailbone. Google it. I think sitting on a doughnut is the only thing to do.

Like Suzanne W., I also injured my tail bone many years ago. Hurt like heck! and I also have a desk job. I didn't go to the doctor because I didn't think there was much they could do. It took about 6 months, but the pain finally went away and all was well.

Yes, go and I second the steroid dose-pak mentioned below. I normally don't take any medications but when I hurt my hip last fall the steroid dos-pak literally got me through the holidays. I was almost incapacitated from pain prior to going to my orthopedic doc. And you can't really stop using your hip, just like you can't immobilize your tail bone. Even sitting or lying down those areas can be affected.

Good luck.

I read the article that B suggested. The beginning of the article did say not much can be done. The end said to see the doctor.

My cousin had lots of pain with a tailbone injury. Eventually the doctor told him his tailbone had curved inward. After the doctor pushed it back in place He had less pain

I suggest going to the doctor so that you will know why you have pain. Just knowing is helpful. I do do better when I actually know what is happening.

If you've sprained or broken your tail bone there's nothing they can do for it.
Maybe you can sit on a donut.
If not, try putting a box under your computer so you an stand at your desk.
It takes roughly 8 weeks for bones to heal.
Hope you feel better sooner than that!

Please put aside your embarrassment (because I think that's what is happening here) and go to the doctor. I'll bet you've either broken your tailbone or you've bent it into the nerves.

I did that when I was a kid - bent it into the nerves in a 90 degree angle. A chiropractor popped it back with his gloved finger up my rectum, and I sat on a split cushion for 6 months. The regular doctors didn't offer me ANY option but removal of the tailbone or pain for the rest of my life. (What is wrong with this picture?! Thank goodness for the chiropractor!)

I've haven't had any problems with it since.

Go get an xray.
