If you want to and you can afford it and she deserves it and you don't normally spoil her, then I vote yes. If it's more than you usually would spend on her birthday, and she wants it, you can give her money towards it and let her earn the rest.

I am all for getting kids new technology to use for educational reasons and not to ONLY play silly games all day. It is the way that kids are learning now. :-)

Just make sure you get a very good case for it and that it stays properly in that case and make sure she understands that the screen is glass! My 13 year old nephew loves using my iPad. One day he was using it at my house, he carried it into the kitchen under his arm and dropped it.

It happened so fast as soon as he stepped out of the carpeted living room into the tiled kitchen. One of the corners was out of it's rubber protector even though it was in it's case and that corner of the glass shattered:(

So now nephew and sis have to pay for the replacement. I've heard of apple sometimes replacing iPads at no cost randomly depending on the circumstances, so we're hoping when we go for our appt. that we will be so lucky!

We purchased an iPad , as a " family gift" for Christmas last year. It was money well spent. I didn't realize what a great educational tool, it could be.

The Ipad2 prices are pretty reasonable now. Get the insurance if it's reasonably priced. We got it and our 5 year old dropped it on a tile floor 4 months later. It was replaced by Apple.

Get a good cover - the otter's are expensive, but pretty hardy. And go to the Apple store and get a class on how to operate it - for YOURSELF - so you can set protections, etc. You don't want her buying things on it without your permission.

Enjoy!

It seems a very expensive item for a birthday but who am I to tell someone what they can/can't spend on their childs gifts!! If you can afford it then certainly do it!

I won an iPad last December at my companies holiday party. There really are some great apps to help kids learn..........there are also some junk ones so watch what she puts on there!

I'm not a big fan of apple products. I gave both of my girls a Kindle Fire for Christmas and they love it. Amazon's product support and warranty is far better. The materials used are chosen with durability in mind. Things that seem to be woefully lacking in the iPad.

Just found this article and thought you might like to see it:

It depends on how well she takes care of valuable stuff. An iPad, case, and insurance can be pricey. Check with your homeowners insurance. The insurance against breakage, theft, etc. might be lower.

i dont know much about the tech of today. not sure if its the right fit for her or not. assuming she is asking for it. i believe it is a safer option because of little or no internet access. i know two young ones 13 and 9 sisters that both have there own personal ipads...its great reward for there good behavior and when they do something to get them in trouble it gets taken away. the older girl did leave it outside overnight...did not ruin it but it is something to consider...the damage that could be done!! I vote YES!!! - talk to a techy guy about the right fit for her and the needs she is wanting, school work, just for fun..

***********added ******* viewing ppl stating about breakage. We have a "iphone" repair place local to our city. He replaces broken screens and you might look into purchasing a used one...doing homework and realizing u might get a pice o junk if u dont get it from a reputible place.
