Should I Get a Flu Shot? (I'm 6.5 Wks Pregnant)

I'm going to ask my OB when I go for my first appointment on the 16th. I wish I would have gotten it when my kids got theirs in September, but I didn't...Since I'm in my first trimester, I don't know if I should get it now or wait until the second trimester. I don't think I got one at all with my last pregnancy. I worry about the preservatives from it affecting the baby, so even if the OB recommends it, I don't know.....what do you all think?

What can I do next?

It is safe and highly recommended for pregnant women, as they are more likely to suffer complications from the flu. Get the shot.

Hi. I'm not a doctor, but I am a medic and I give flu shots all the time.

You should absolutely get the flu shot. There are preservative free, single dose vials, so no worries. Just ask for thermerasol free.

Please protect yourself and your baby. Getting the flu can cause premature labor and a host of other complications.

Your OB will give it to you at your appointment. I am pretty sure that mine gave me my flu shot at my 8 or 9 week "pregnancy confirmation" appointment with my last baby (2010). Do not go and get it at a drugstore/clinc type thing as your OB will have the right flu shot for your stage of pregnancy. You'll be fine until then.

You could risk getting the flu (hardly a hardship or blip on the radar, even though it does suck to be sick when pregnant) or risk vaccine-damaging your unborn child.
For those of us with vaccine-damaged children, the answer is clear.

I would NEVER EVER EVER risk the flu shot. It doesn't even work, as they don't know for sure what the 'flu' will be any given year.

I'm in the minority here, but my answer is no. If you damage your child, you will regret it for the rest of your life. If you get the flu, you will feel physically bad for maybe 2 weeks.

go get it. If you want to wait and get at your OB, that is fine, but please know that there is no special "pregnancy" brand of flu shot. ;) I believe they may some with lower preservatives for those who are allergic to various foods, etc (I have a friend who is allergic to eggs and she can't get the run of the mill flu shot because of it).

Congratulations!!!

With one of my children there was a shortage of flu shots. I was understanding they were saving them for elderly or children. As I watched the nurse refuse another and he walked away she offered me one? She said pregnant women fall into the shot list. IDK if that is what
Christine S was talking about or if they came out with better products since then???

I would get it. I begged for it but the kid's Dr. would not do it. I had to go to the OB but had to wait for that appt. I always request the kind without mercury and have driven to the far clinic for that. New research is showing a link with fevers and autism so you DON'T want to get the flu, at any point in pregnancy.

My doctor does not recommend the flu shot unless you are 12 weeks. I have been pregnant 3 times and twice had to wait until a little later in the season to get it, but after the 12 week mark he highly recommends it. I would check with your OB and see what his/her feelings on the subject are. Congratulations!

Absolutely. Tell them you're pregnant, and they'll give you one that's preservative-free.
