Should I Call the Doctor?

My son is 10 months old and has not been himself the past week. Actually, it's a little over a week now. He has been very fussy, which at first I thought was because my husband was out of town, but now he is back and my son is still fussy. I also thought it could be teething, but usually a couple days of fussiness is followed by visible teeth, and I still don't see any. He also has changed his eating habits. He turns his head, shuts his mouth tight, and yells when you try to feed him solids. He has always been a great eater and now is turning down even his favorite foods that I used to not be able to shovel in fast enough for him. I tried more finger foods instead since he typically enjoys feeding himself, but he barely eats that way too. He also has had very little pee in his diaper the past week. I figured it might be due to the heat outside (although he has been outdoors very little) but I give him access to a bottle of water or watered down juice all day long. He drinks about 8 oz. of water and juice a day. I also nurse him 5 or 6 times, but he will only eat for about 3-5 minutes each time. His sleep has been erratic as well. Some nights he sleeps through the night and other nights he wakes up 2 or 3 times. He was also a very predictable long afternoon napper, but now his naps are all over the place. Should I call the doctor based on these symptoms? Please advise.

What can I do next?

The baby is dehydrated ..that is far too little urine over a week . I'll bet it's also dark yellow and a little smelly. Take him into the MD , he/she will probably want to evaluate you baby as to why this is going on and if he needs fluid replacement i.e. IV fluids .

Good Luck

Hi L., your son may be teething, babies can be in pain teeting, long before you ever see teeth, and if his gums hurt that could explain him not wanting to eat as much. For your peace of mind you can call his doctor and see what he/she says. Let me know how it goes. J.

When in doubt call the doctor. You know your kid and you know when something is not right. I'd rather have a doctor look at me like I'm crazy then to have them say I should have brought him in days ago.

Other's have suggested that it may just be the heat and or teething and they may be right. But, your description is of many changes, eating habbits, urin load, and sleep patterns. Whenever an infant child has significant pattern changes to the things you listed I would call a doctor. The pattern of change is across the bord, I would let the doctor know how significant and comprehensive these changes are. There are some pretty serrious possibilities that could start with such symptoms, though they are unlikely. The most imeadeate concern is dehydration, and you should definely tell your doctor aboult your child's lack of urine and refusal of fluids. Dehydration can occur in mild illnesses with infants, and is a significant problem.

I'm going to guess that it's teething plus the awful heat we've had. If you think he's losing weight or becoming dehydrated, you need to take him to the doctor.
