My son Cayden is 10 months old. He is crawling and just started standing a month ago. Now he is testing the waters as to standing by himself. What is a mom's advice on wearing shoes?
Hi D.! My pediatrician rec. soft-soled shoes (not high-tops or rubber soles) for new walkers. I found an ad in Parenting magazine that rec. Pediped shoes. I love them although the boys selection is not quite as great as the girls (as is everything else). I put them on my son when he was walking at 11 months and he loves them. I order them online at pediped.com. Good luck!

My doctor also said no shoes, but for when we needed shoes, my son loved Robeez! Target also makes a version that are good and cheaper. But my son seriously LOVED his Robeez, they stayed on, and he was protected when outside.

My advice is no shoes! Shoes actually makes walking MUCH more difficult and it is not very good for their little feet. Good luck - I remembered praying for the day he would walk and then crying afterwards!

The Best way to go is No Shoes. It's easier for them to learn w/out shoes. Ask your pedi. If you really want shoes go to stride rite. I used their shoes for the 1st year.
Good Luck and I hope this helps.
Robeez are the best, that is what our dr told us we should put our daughter in. They are a bit more expensive but well worth the money. Once you put them on they won't come off until you take them off. I have found that the ones that are sold at WalMart and Target are not nearly as well made and that my daughter can get them off.
Robeez come in many different styles and colors and designs. My daughter has been wearing them since she was 9 months and I never have a problem with her putting her shoes on or taking them off. Her feet never her hot and sweaty like other shoes tend to do.
If you will look on Ebay you can find them at a fraction of the cost. Hope this information helps.

I'd wait as long as possible to buy shoes. It's very tempting to go out and get a pair or two at this point, but according to everything I read at that time, it's better for wee ones to learn to walk without shoes in the house and then get a pair when they start taking their first steps for outside play. If you want to buy one pair, I suggest something like Robeez that is like a leather wrap around their feet vs. anything that looks like what we'd wear. And I'd only get one pair. My daughter started cruising at 9 months, but didn't take her first steps until 13 months. Congrats on having a soon to be toddler who will learn to walk during a warm time of year! My daughter had to learn to walk in socks :)

My Dr. recommended no shoes this way he can keep his natural balance and here in Tx we dont wear shoes around that often meaning indoors. He will have a hard time at first with walking in grass due to the feel.If he has socks on make sure they have grippers on the bottom.Make sure if you have a fireplace to cover the edges with pillows it is a perfect height for some reason is a kid magnet.I went and had a cushion made for mine and saved many trip to the ER.

No shoes, unless on the hot pavement or other uncomfortable surface. Then, I too suggest Robeez or the knock-off brand they have a Target.

Buy shoes bot my children got there firt pair of shoes when they were 4 months old (robeez). They were both very early walkers so I bought them Stride Rite shoes at 9 months old. I am a firm believer that children should have shoes especially if they start walking.

No Shoes. Except when you know the ground is going to be too hot (hot asphalt in TX. wow)
Our pediatrician told me (and I've heard from other sources) that it is better for foot development to let them go barefoot.

When my son was learning to walk, I was told to get him those shoes that you used to see a long time ago...they typical white shoes for babies..but they go up the ankle a little bit and offer ankle support. They were VERY soft and subtle and he did great in them. He walked VERY late though....18 months.

I used those leather shoes that you can find like at target instead of shoes cuz I had bought velcro shoes at target too and they were way too heavy for her feet but now shes walking up a storm and uses stride rite sandals and her converse cuz those are the ones that dont weigh her feet down or fall off easily a little pricey but it works for me.

My son's dr told me it is best to not wear shoes when a child is learning to walk. Since it is summer time you don't have to worry about his feet being cold just get too hot when walking on pavement. I did have the Robeez brand shoes - that are soft soled. I would suggest something like that for him when you are outside or in public but at home keep him bare-footed. In fact, my dr said shoes are just for decoration at this age.

I was told that babies shouldn't wear any type of shoe until they are completely walking on their own. But if they are to wear anything Robeez are good because they are soft and conform to the baby's foot. They are pricey but if you just get one pair or so it should be fine.

The shoes that a child wears when their feet are developing are very important. My husband was a 3rd genration cobbler so he places a lot of importance on good shoes. He feels that you should buy the best that you can afford when they are learning to walk. Our daughter wore only striderite until she was almost 4 yrs old. Try to stay away from shoes that weight alot. This can lead to your child "dragging their feet" or developing poor walking postures.

You don't need shoes in the house but if you take him outside, get the the very thin shoes with soft soles so that he still has the ability to grip with his toes and work on balance.

My sons orthopedic dr says no shoes are best when they are learning. Their arch will develop as it should, and when you put them in shoes it changes the arch a little. Of course you will put shoes on him some, but I say when at home playing, barefoot is best.

lots of sole support while they're young. i know it's expensive for kid's shoes, but i get my daughter Stride Rite shoes. they are wonderful, i've been buying those for her for the last 5 years. i didn't start getting them until she was 2 years old. she has fat feet, so i have to be careful of shoes that i get for her cause if she doesn't try them on first, they usually don't fit.

It's best to not put him in shoes at all if you can, unless maybe somewhere where his feet need protection (hot/cold surface, rocks, etc)! His muscles in his feet/legs will grow stronger and be more steady without shoes!
When shoes are needed, soft soled shoes are the best! There are several brands out there. Robeez are the name brand but Target has an off brand that is just as good and I am sure others offer them as well!

I would recommend the regular leather walking shoes. I had gotten my kids walking shoes at jcpenny i believe. The shoes have a solid good walking bottom and the shoes are real leather that help the little ones feet to breathe. With regular walking shoes they are flat on the bottom and are less likely to make the kids fall down more with the groves catching the carpet.
I hope this helps you out!
God Bless!

I also heard no shoes while learning to walk...but my 10mo old was very interested in shoes. She already learned to pull herself up and cruise. So once in a while I put a pair of shoes on her...she likes it. Since every child is different, I like to base my decisions on my child's signs and interests.
They are so cute when learning to walk! My son looked like Frankenstein's Monster when trying to walk and my daughter looks like a ballerina!
