Hi Moms,

I want to get a Shellac/gel manicure, but I am wondering if it is bad for our nails. I know acrilic nails are bad for our nails, but is the Shellac/gel as bad? Will it make my nails dull and weak? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I did them last spring and they lasted 3 weeks each time. It was wonderful while I had them. I did them 3 times. When I stopped, my nails were awful. I had incredibly strong, healthy nails before trying Shellac. After, they were thin and weak. The reason I liked the shellac nails was because I could never keep nail polish on without it chipping. Shellac solved that problem. Now I'm back to having healthy nails, and I just don't paint them.

The gel manicure lasted 3 weeks on me - a total record. Usually, I get chips within 24 hours of my mani. BUT, my nails were in really bad shape when I finally took it off. They're fine, now, but it took several weeks for them to "recover" completely. I don't know if I'd do it again....

I had mine done for an event & it made them thin & weak. I normally don't do anything other than manicure & polish for my nails.

I get manicures every two weeks. After about ten days my nails are starting to look pretty ragged - polish chipped and grown out, dull, etc. I tried the Shellac type polish a few times. It's great while it's on. Doesn't chip, stays shiny and all that. But taking it off is awful. My skin is really dry to begin with and soaking them in acetone only makes matters worse. I didn't notice that it damaged my nails really - but I have very thick, strong nails. I decided that, because of the price and the removal process, I would continue to do regular manicures but if I am going on a trip or there's a special event coming up and I want my manicure to look nice for a longer time; I will do the shellac type polish.

I've had gel, acrylic & Shellac. Shellac was better for my nails, however, it would dry them out if I would put it on back to back (and I have oily nails). I found that if I did 2 rounds of Shellac and then plain polish, that kept my nails healthy.

I did it for a wedding I was in last spring and it lasted about 4 days- which is a record for me. It was really pretty while it lasted and my nails were fine when it came off.

I got them done once, then to get them off you have to soak in acitione and they used a drill ... you have to do this every two weeks, no they can not just do a fill like acrylic nails ... so my vote is they are worse!
