I just went through this a couple weeks ago with my daughter and my doctor told me to watch for fever, vomiting , nausea and tummy pain....it should pass but just keep an out for those symptoms. Good Luck!
Do I need to sift through her poop to make sure it passes or can I just keep an eye out for tummy pain? Thanks.

You need to make sure it passes in her poop. Tummy pain is not the only possible problem if the penny doesn't pass. It could get lodged somewhere else in her digestive tract. If the penny doesn't pass in the next 24 to 48 hours she needs to be seen by a doctor for x-rays. I am speaking from experience- a little girl I cared for several years ago swallowed a quarter when she was 4 years old. Best of luck! L.
My nephew pulled the flip top off his soda can and put it inside the soda. Don't ask me why. But, he swallowed it. My sister took him to the ER and they said to watch for it coming out because if it didn't, it could cause problems.
So, she had him go in a big metal bowl and yes, she sifted through it until it came out. It took about 3 days but it did come out.
Lots of kids swallow lots of things and as long as they come out, it's usually no problem. Not fun for you, but that should be the worst of it.
They told my sister that if he didn't pass the tab, they would have to do x-rays and things to see if it got lodged somewhere, but luckily it never came to that.
My nephew was no worse for wear and never swallowed anything weird after that.
Best wishes!
My daughter swallowed a few coins and we called the er. They told us to bring her in because it can get lodged and cause her to choke. They will do an xray and then also to check for it in poop. The joys of motherhood...
You might check on it because it is a penny, I heard that they are not all copper anymore, and they can be toxic. Maybe that was inacurate, but it never hurts to ask. Poisin control could probably tell you if this is an issue or not. I would also check with your ER like Vicki did and see if they consider it an emergency.

Same happened to my daughter. The doctor said not to worry. We did look at her poop (but didn't sift through), but never saw it. It's been 13 years and she's fine. If she experiences any tummy pain, call the doctor immediately.
My mom still has the penny I swallowed as a kid... she went through my diaper and found it... If it were me, I'd watch for it too.
what goes in one end and is not digested comes out the other. :) this to shall pass no pun intended.
My son swallowed a penny at age 4, and the doctor said he would pass it and not to worry about. he never had any stomach pain or symptoms, so i'm sure he did pass it. J.
