Shampoo Suggestions for My Daughter?

My daughter almost 13, and beginning to develop. In the past 2 or 3 weeks her hair has become an oily mess!
Is there a good shampoo we can try? She currently has one that is Suave, and one that is Fructis....It seems like it is the top front of her head, and the sides down to her ears that looks greasy, the back top part of her head looks ok! At first I thought too much conditioner, or product but she rarely uses products unless it is mousse to scrunch waves in her hair, which she has not done in over a month. I did give her some Neurtogena shampoo to try, but today it looks yucky again. She has eczema so she normally showers every other day and I told her now that she is growing up she is going to need a daily shower, especially with having PE this semester. I'd appreciate any names of shampoo you Moms would suggest. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you mamas! I called my hair stylist and she suggested a shampoo which I was able to find at Ulta. She tried it last night, it is made by Paul Mitchell. This morning her hair looks much better. Since she has independently washed her hair since age 8, at first I was thinking she just had not rinsed well, but could not believe she was not rinsing well repeatedly-especially after I mentioned it to her to pay better attention. we'll see how this works! Thanks again!

My son is very oily and the Suave clarifying works like a charm and has never dried out his hair. And it very affordable!

Conditioners tend to make hair oily. Find a shampoo for "oily" hair and stay away from shampoo and conditioners in one. If she needs mousse, just put in on the bottom part of the hair, don't put products on the top of the head.

I'd get some redkin from the hairdresser and also some bedhead from your grocer. Redkin is a higher quality than over thre counter. And bedhead is great for those days she doesnt wash her hair because it helps take the oil out. She should not be washing her hair every day. Every other day is fine, Only condition once to twice a week. If she is oily I'd say only once until you clear it up.

Hey Coffeegirl- aww! I can feel for your daughter- my hair can become very oily on top as well. I use Melaleuca's herbal shampoo- http://www.melaleuca.com/ProductStore/Product.aspx?sku=4117
and conditioner only every other time I shampoo- no sulfates
If you browse around under the product store- you will also see RENEW lotion- it would be GREAT for her eczema- I get a touch of it under my wedding ring, and the renew clears it up in 2 applications. My sister uses the bath oil, the wash and the lotion for her 9 yrs old son who also has eczema.
Hopefully this helps you!

glad that you found an answer - if you are still looking for another suggestion my daughter uses from Costco Kirkland Organic Shampoo and Conditioner - only thing that works for her. Before we switched to this shampoo my hairdresser did a Malibu (pretty sure that's what it was called) on her to strip out the old buildup.

I would talk to someone at an Ulta or a salon for some recommendations. Typically with eczema I wouldn't expect a lot of oil so not sure what exactly is going on but a professional could steer you in the right direction. I have tried regular store bought hair products and my hair always feels drab when I use them. Some things are just worth investing a little more money in...especially at her age where self esteem is a huge factor.

Melalueca's Herbal Shampoo is good for all types of hair. They have other kinds too so you can easily use one for a while and then switch (which is always a good idea w/ shampoos).

Also, their products are toxin-free so they are not likely to irritate her eczema...in fact, their other products could help.

What about Dove?

I would have her use Cetaphil for body wash and lotion if she needs to shower daily, or wash just her hair daily and bathe the rest of her every other day. Get a detachable shower head so she can lean over the tub easily.

Also, ask her how she's shampooing. It may also be that she's not giving the shampoo enough time or she's not working it in as well as she needs to, or even rinsing as much as she needs to.

I am not sure about the eczema issue but maybe she could use a touch of dry shampoo on the days where she doesn't get into the shower. Or, she could do like I do...I just wash my hair without getting into the shower by kneeling over the bathtub and just washing the hair. I have really dry skin but oily hair and it is not an option to go to work a bit greasy and look unprofessional with clients. I feel that the dry shampoo does the trick on the weekends and during the week I just wash my hair on the odd days without taking a full shower. Hopefully this helps you manage it...I don't really think one shampoo will stop you from having greasy hair on the second day.

it sounds like she's not washing all of her hair , or not getting all the shampoo out. since only part of her hair looks greasy.
I'd suggest having her wash her hair every other day like my mom made me. If she IS getting it all done that may be a better solution rather than switching shampoos.

If that shampoo doesn't work you can always buy a 100% Natural Chemical Free Shampoo online. Just email me and I'll send you the link of the product store. Sometimes its the ingredients they use for longer shelf life in the shampoo that make it more oily.

My step daughter went through this too. Have her use a good dandruff shampoo and help her wash the front of her head. I think my step daughter was afraid of getting shampoo in her eyes and just wasn’t getting a good clean in the front. It can also be hormones and the body creating more oils in the face and head area.

She is also 13 and likes Garnier Fructis. They make three different ones for healthy scalp.

There is also a tea tree and mint shampoo and conditioner from Organix that works well too.

I quit using Suave products for my kids when they outgrew needing the "no tears" formulas. The product isn't very good, in my opinion. My daughter has very long almost straight, fine hair. And anything harsh just makes it a mess. I buy her the same products that I do or might use myself. Aussie products, or Matrix/Biolage or So Sexy or whatever from the salon.
She will be 11 this summer, and she does tend to get a little bit of a greasy look sometimes on the top, but I have found that it is more from showering at night and going to bed with her hair still damp, so that it dries with the comb "rows" in it. At least that is what I THINK is happening.
Could that be the case with your daughter?

I was going to suggest Neutrogena but I see you have tried that. My daughter is 13 and it's the only shampoo that seems to work for her. Typically, her hair looks oily around her face and part, even if she shampooed that day. But with the Neutrogena clarifying shampoo she can go for a couple days and it still looks nice. I think we bought the CVS drugstore knock off last time and it works just as well. She is really bothered by it so I know she is washing and rinsing well. She only conditions the ends now, too.

The kids use the same shampoos and conditioners I do. I have a friend who had hair like this. Once she hit puberty it changed, the oil glands turned on.

She, and her daughters, all would keep body perms in their hair. It gave it fullness at the roots and even if it was getting oily it didn't look bad due to not being "slicked" down after being brushed or combed.

I would also wash all the combs and brushes she uses on at least a weekly basis.
