Shampoo Recommendations for 3.5 YO Girl with Straight Hair?

Given the recent carcinogenic level findings in Johnson & Johnson baby shampoos, we were using the natural style shampoo they have but it's awful - my daughter's hair looks dirty after a day. Are there issues (other than getting in the eyes) to using adult shampoos, such as Aussie brand or Garnier Fructis? I've found after trying them, they all make her hair look fantastic and easy to comb, but I'm concerned whether there's an actual reason kids can't use them (chemicals, etc). Any advice or suggestions are helpful, thanks!

We have been using regular shampoo & conditioner on my 5 y.o. DD for a while now. She has always had long/a lot of hair & the baby or combo shampoo/conditioner made for kids never worked very well for us. As long as you are careful about not getting it in their eyes, you shouldn't have any issues.

We use this kids shampoo by Kiss My Face. It's rated very low in toxicity on EWG's site. It says it has built-in conditioner, but you absolutely do need to use a conditioner with it. It doesn't make our child's hair greasy in the least.

Go to a Whole Foods.
They have natural products. And I have found the employees there to be very knowledgeable, about any questions you have.

I've been using Suave's Free and Gentle 2in1 Shampoo for sometime now on my 2.5 year old, J & J's is too expensive. It's tear-free and I checked the label and it doesn't contain either carcinogen.

As far as using regular shampoos and conditioners, I haven't heard they shouldn't be used on little ones, other than they may sting their eyes. I personally can't use the Garnier products as I'm allergic to an ingredient in them :-/

Hi D.,

I've used California Baby for my daughter since she was born and stil do (she's now almost 3). Her hair is super fine and straight and it works well. I don't condition her hair every day though and even when I do I mostly condition her tangles.

I also use Rainbow Detangler spray, which is fabulous at removing tangles. You can find the former at Target, Whole Foods and Amazon and the latter at many supermarkets.

I'm not sure about the shampoos you mentioned, but they may still be more chemically than you'd like. I hope you find what works best for you!

Take care and good luck!

Check the labels for parabens (methyl, ethyl, and the others) and check out safecosmetics, org or similar sites to check to see what products are appropriate. Good luck, N.

We have been using Melaleuca Koala Pals on our kids for years. They also have 2 new lines for adults, which we also use on the kids depending on which bathroom we can manage getting them into at bedtime! Haha! Their hair is gorgeous, strong and with the melaleuca oil it helps protect from lice. Good luck!!

Not sure there are worse chemicals in them than in the Johnson and Johnson's.
We had to start using "adult" shampoos and conditioner for my daughter when she was around 4. Her hair is very fine, has a Very slight amount of body, and is loooooong. Sot it tangles quite easily. The "kid" stuff didn't even calm the strands down enough that I could get a wide toothed comb through it, and it was starting to damage her hair.
Since I was still shampooing her hair for her anyway, and she was always very good about tipping her head back and not fussing or getting anything in her eyes, I just started using MY shampoo/conditioner on her, too.
Still do. :) Her hair is SO much nicer now.
