Can someone recommend a shampoo for a dog with itchy skin? I've used an "oatmeal" kind from the pet store but it just makes my dog's skin itch even more. We've spent thousands of dollars on this dog for various other health issues and I'm trying to avoid another trip to the vet. We love him dearly and it's horrible seeing him so miserable. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can provide!

Melaleuca's Herbal Shampoo and use the Renew bath oil and Renew lotion afterwards! It is amazing. My aunt has two dogs that have very bad dry and itchy skin and she uses it all the time. My mom also uses it on her dog! It also keeps the fleas and tics away.

It's likely not the shampoo. Try Nutro dog food. Talk to someone at the pet store. They will tell you which one to buy for itchy skin.

Our dog has severe allergies. Severe. They caused her so many infections we wound up having to seek the advice of a doggie dermatologist. So now we give her allergy shots once a week. We use oatmeal shampoo, but you mentioned that wasn't working for you. The allergy shots seem to keep her from getting infections, but they do not help entirely with the itchiness. Our regular vet gave us the following tips and they have helped quite a bit.

Vinegar rinses on the dog once weekly which will help the skin pH to prevent yeast infections. Once the dog is bathed and the shampoo is rinsed well, we dilutes white vinegar (one part vinegar to 3 part cool water) and spray it on the pet and allows the pet to air dry. The dog may smell like pickle until they dry, but then you barely notice it. We kist keep a spray bottle handy on our back porch and lock her out until she is dry. She is allowed on furniture and it has never been an issue after she is completely dry.

Our dog's itchiness keeps us awake at night...all the scratching and biting. We give our dog benedryll. I just buy the generic stuff. I think vets typically recommend one 25mg tab per pound of body weight, but I would definitely talk to your vet first, especially if you r dog is on any other medications. Our dog is 100lbs. and gets up to 4 tablets (although most nights two seem to do the trick).

One other thing- daily fatty acids (derm caps/fish oil) are essential for allergy patients. They help condition the coat from the inside out as well as help the skins defense against allergens.I bought a huge bottle from Sam's Club and give them to our dog in the mornings.

HTH!

We have malamutes that have very sensitive skin and the summer months are the worse - our vet recommended a line of shampoos that you can get from either petsmart or petco - they are call hylite - they are an amino acid based shampoo that helps the skin develop its own protective barrier. Works wonders!!!!!!

I second all the other suggestions such as fish oil and benadryl. You can get a huge bottle of generic benadryl at Costco for a little over $3.00 (400 tabs) Check out his diet. Some dogs are allergic to wheat or corn. We started having problems with our pup once we started giving her Milk Bones. We have eliminated the wheat and corn, use fish oil (which she loves, btw)and the itches have cleared up.

J.,

If you find something let me know. I have a 12 year old golden who is wearing her hips out from scratching so much. THe only thing that works is a steroid shot and I dont want to pump her full of that if I can find an alternative. Thanks!

Our dog had allergies to the fertilizer that the lawn guys put on the grass, and he would chew his paws until all of the fur was off. The vet gave us a steroid pill that I just put in a little piece of bread once a day whenever the problem flared up again. It worked great. -- I guess that this would require a vet visit for you, but very easy to deal with! Good luck!

I tried everything and spent zillions on products to make my shepherd chow mix not itch....only to find out she needed to take an allergy pill every day for all the rest of her life. It'll be way cheaper in the long run and you'll all be less miserable. Sorry

We just use baby shampoo on our dog. So far, it's the only thing that is reasonably priced and doesn't cause problems. Also, consider giving your dog a daily fish oil tablet or pouring a little bit of fish oil on their food.

Sulfhodene has always worked really well - especially if the dog has allergies. You can get it at the grocery store. I have even gone so far as to just rub some on the dogs skin and it seems to relieve the itch pretty well.

I second the fish oil. When our dog's skin was really dry and itchy, we put cod liver oil on her food. She loved it and it did seem to help. We used coal tar shampoo that we got from Petsmart. It was not expensive but it does smell a bit like medicine. The smell is not as strong after a day or two. Good luck!

Apple cider Vinegar works really well! And it's SUPER cheap! I believe the mixture is half ACV & half water. Douce your dog with it after you bathe him. Rub it in gently & do not rinse. You can even mix it in a spray bottle & use it inbetween baths. You can google Apple Cider Vinegar for dogs & see all the great uses! My dachshund has never had skin allergies, but I use it on her after each bath & it keeps fleas & ticks off of her. It is the best thing I have ever used for fleas!!! Even better than Advantix which I had always believed to be the best flea preventative. I do know someone who has a dog with skin allergies. They tried it & were amazed! Google it & see! Then give it a try :)

Fish oil made a big difference in our dog. We just squirt it on her food. I've seen some in the pet store, but we get ours through the vet (don't know what the difference is). Ours is Eicosaderm (I pronounce it I-cose-a-derm) and it's a large bottle that we pay around $20 for, but it lasts for about a year it seems. She would lick and scratch her chest raw and bleeding almost, and now she occasionally licks her paws, but that's about it. A very easy and effective solution for us.

i an American Sheperd that suffered from lots of white dog issues. My sister is a vet. She also had a bird dog with skin problems. She put the dogs on a L-Lysine regimen. Her oldest son had a problem with a scaly patch on his scalp that would sometimes show up on his nose as well. She was told that the L-Lysine would help. It took the patch completely away. So she tried it on the dogs. It works great. They also take fish oil pills. My dog is about 120 pounds. She takes 2 L-Lysine pills, 500 mg each, daily. She also takes 2 fish oil capsules at 1000 mg each daily. No pink, itchy skin on this one. It really makes a difference. And we don't have to use steroids or take sedative-type meds. Hope you find something that works for your furry baby.

Our dog (golden retriever) had the same issues. The first thing our vet suggested was to try a new dog food. The most common cause of skin allergies in dogs is the grains in dog food. He suggested a grain-free Duck & Potato blend to see if the itchiness subsided. It worked! And we haven't had to put her on any allergy medications. At first we purchased the brand of dog food that the vet sells. But it was inconvenient to go there to buy food & was a little more expensive. I found the brand Dick Van Patten's Natures Blend at our local pet supply shop, Pet Supplies Plus in Dallas. They have a Duck & Potato blend, which we use and they also carry other grain-free allergy formulas. These foods cost a little more than the average dog food, but we've always fed our dogs premium food so the cost was about the same for us. According to our vet, food allergies are VERY common, so if you haven't already tried it, a simple food change might just do the trick for your dog! Good luck!

go to www.nationalallergy.com
We use an anti-allergen dog shampoo from that site.
It's great.

Also, try mixing some fish or flax seed oil into your dog's food. (whole foods, vitamin shoppe, sprouts) The omega fatty acids will do wonders for overall inflammation of joints, organs and skin. It will take a few weeks to figure out the right amount to use and see a difference, but a high-quality food mixed with fatty acids will really help with skin dryness and even arthritis. Good luck!

My dog has the same issues. I know how you feel about going to the vet AGAIN and paying more money. I think we are up to about $6,000 for our 6 year old dog. We switched her food to sensitive skin Science diet, got a water filter for the water we all drink and sometimes she is on allergy pills. Usually spring/fall like people. Doing all of this has helped and she doesn't have any more problems. She used to scratch until she bled but the past few years she has not had any big problems. Good luck to you and your pooch!

Try Hydra Pearls shampoo. I used to only be able to get it from our vet but you may be able to find it on line. Also Drs. Foster & Smith carry an anti-itch line that seems to work ok. The next suggestion would be to avoid food that contains corn etc. And finally, it could be your grass- next to impossible to avoid I know! But there is a mold that is in Bermuda grass that gets released when you mow it and that could be causing the problem, all you can do for that really is keep him from lying and/or rolling in the grass and keep him from being out in the yard when it's getting cut. We have a dog that has allergies and sometimes our only option to get it cleared up is to go with Temaril-P a steroid, once he goes through one round it's usually gone for the season, I don't like putting him on it because his breed has a tendency toward pancreatitis but he gets so miserable it makes us miserable.

Try going to a "grain free" diet. It worked for my dog. You can get the food at any pet store and wal-mart has even started carrying a brand. Make sure it's 100% grain free.
