Our super strength Hoover is finally dying on us. So I'm looking for recommendations ... we have a dog and a cat so pet hair is a fact of life. We have carpet and tile and I like to use the vacuum on both. Our current vacuum, although super powerful and picks up fabulously, is a total BEAST and weighs so much.
I've debated about the Dyson model where the head swivels all around (how handy!); but I've seen some reviews that say Dyson's don't pick up all that well and frankly they are expensive to boot.
What vacuum have you had the most success with?? Money isn't a huge consideration; we just want it to do a good job and last (our current vacuum is about 8 years old)
Thanks, ladies!
P.S. Model names or numbers would be suuuuper great!!
Well, thanks for all of your responses to this very "sexy" question! Patty B -- your response also made ME laugh!!
Looks like Dyson is winning this hands down, so I've done some online research and I'm focusing on the Dyson DC33 Multi Floor vacuum or the Dyson DC24 Ball HEPA Upright Bagless Ultracompact and Lightweight Vacuum. They're the same price on sale (Best Buy $319 (free shipping) for anyone looking), but the Multi-Floor has higher amps. However, the Ball turning function is really compelling, too. Hmmmm.....

I love my Kirby Sentria. Yes it is ridiculously priced (we paid over a grand for it) but it works awesome. Lifetime warranty. Great on pethair. When the guy came to my house to do a demo, it was so gross what he pulled out of the carpet with the Kirby, and I just vacuumed right before he came. It also came with a carpet shampooer and a bunch of attachments.

Holy Cow, I LOVE my Dyson Ball, my only regret is I didn't buy one YEARS ago. I found it on Overstocks.com for $350.
(btw, my guy thinks the vacuum IS sexy, tehehe, it does, however loosely qualify as a tool, toy, gadget, technology, etc)

dyson is the best and itdoesn't have to be expensive. got mine from over 600 to 249 by using kohls deals. follow slickdeals.net, put dyson on search box, and check daily until a deal shows up. that is how i got mine.

I have the Dyson Animal and I love it. Before, I had some $100 vacuum and I NEVER felt like the dust and the dog hair was picked up. When my baby started crawling, it made me CRAZY.
I used my Christmas and Birthday money to buy the Dyson, and am thrilled with it. It does a great job. I've had it for 2 years now and I still love it.
I bought it after Christmas off of Amazon, an it was a couple hundred dollars cheaper than before Christmas.

I have the Dyson Animal. I actually asked for it for Christmas 3 years ago (how goofy, I know, lol). It was pricey, BUT...I was spending $75-$100 on a new Hoover/Eureka/Dirt Devil every 9 months or so anyway...so in the long run...this was the much smarter financial decision. I was just noticing the other day how it still has the same "swirly" action as it did the first time I used it. I've never had to replace my filter or any other parts on it. The filter just needs to be rinsed with hot water once every 6 months, and I usually wash the canister with soap and water once a month or so. As long as you take care of it...empty it regularly, clean the filter as needed, and keep the seals and gaskets clear of dust and dirt (as easy as wiping it off with a napkin), it will last much longer than the others. I wouldn't trade mine for anything!

I love our Dyson. It's 5 years old and still picks up great. We also got a Roomba. It's great on picking up the pet hair, but is not near the suction. If you like to run a vac every day, the Roomba is fun. (though a bit futzy to clean) The Roomba wouldn't replace a 'standard' vacuum IMHO.
The thing I don't like about the Dyson is that the footprint is high. It hardly goes under any chairs and not a single bed. However it's great at getting the dirt and has no problems with pethair.
do you have a Kirby? Those things are tanks. If you've got a good vac already, look into the Roomba's.

Love my Dyson, never had a problem, and it even picks up the needles from the tree. If they get clogged, it EASILY comes apart and can be cleared. Oh, and I have 2 cats, a dog and 2 kids!

I have a friend with several hairy pets (3 dogs, 2 cats, and 2 or 3 ferrets), and she has a Dyson. Sorry, I don't know which model, but she has had it for several years and loves it! She said when she first got it that she couldn't believe just how much more hair it removed from the carpet, furniture, and curtains! My vacuum is good, but not THAT good. :)

One more Dyson fanatic chiming in here! I bought the DC17 Animal three years ago and still love it. I'm still amazed at how much junk my vacuum picks up. One thing that hasn't been mentioned about the Dysons is the attachment wand - which I love, love, love. When I need to clean baseboards or in corners or anywhere the main unit can't reach, the attachment pops out in a flash and I'm done.
Happy hunting!

GO to a vacuum store!!!! Not BBB, target or other big box. Dyson doesn't suck when compared to Riccar and Eureka...Riccar's are super sucky and are priced as low as $250 if you don't need a lot of bells and whistles. Miele is another great brand, but a little pricier.
Not even consumer reports like Dysons so I'm always surprised when people say they like them. I can only guess they didn't compare a Dyson side-by-side with another comparably priced vacuum?
Anyway, happy shopping. There's nothing happier in a house than fresh vacuum tracks :)

I have a 2 yr old top of the line Oreck that I LOVE. I just took it in today for the FREE yearly tuneup. I get these FREE tuneups for 10 yrs, great warranty as well. SO lightweight, HEPA filter and works great.
I also have 2 older model Hoovers that still work well. One upstairs and one down. Since i have the Oreck, it is no issues to take care of upstairs, downstairs and the steps because it is also so lightweight.
My mom has a Dyson and although it works well, she hates it because it is so heavy and bundlesome to use.
Enjoy choosing!!

I have a dog, a cat and a bunny-[= lots of hair] - The Dyson leaves the carpets looking great.
It also comes with a 5 year warranty. So worth it for the price!

I'm interested to see what you get, I asked for a Dyson for Christmas (lame, I know). I've had my POS cheapie-vac for about a year and I HATE it. I asked this same question of my girlfriends not long ago and everyone with the Dyson loves it. Good Luck!

We recently got a Dyson and my DH loves it! (He is the one in charge of vacuuming :-)) It does not have the swivel head by the way but still very easy to steer.
It picked up so much stuff off the carpets that our two old vacuums (a Hoover and a Panasonic canister) could not, we could not believe it!
We think it is worth the money.
