My husband has severe dandruff and itchy scalp and it's driving him crazy. Does anyone have any home-remedies that will help? He has been using dandruff shampoo and even coal tar shampoo but nothing is helping. He even buzzed his head! Help!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice. I think we are going to try the tea tree oil since that is so popular. I hope it works!

Several others mentioned the same thing I have found- tea tree oil shampoo. I bought mine in the health food section at Kroger and it's on sale right now too. I have terrible psoriasis and this made such a difference. My husband started having lots of itchy dry scalp so he started using my shampoo and found it really helps too.

girl, have him try listerine (the mouth wash). have him put it on his entire scalp, leave it on for five minutes, then rinse.

One of the best things I did for my 13 yr old with this same problem was to get a chlorine filter for the shower. Chlorine is very caustic to the skin and can show up as dry patches on the skin and dandruff on the scalp. After about 5 showers with the filter he could see a difference. I bought mine at a health food store for about $40. I have also seen them online. I agree with others that tea tree is very good for the scalp as it is soothing. Good luck.

Does your husband have dandruff or a type of dermatitis? My siblings and I have scalp dermatoses (scaling, redness, and plaques) on our scalp and even behind the ears. Ours is mostly at the base of our hairline/neck. We could not wear black or dark colored shirts because it looked like we had severe dandruff. I tried many OTC shampoos and I've seen dermatologists in the past who have prescribed medications and shampoos but they really didn't work and smelled bad. My dermtoses had gotten so bad last year that it became infected. My PCP prescribed a foam medication called Luxiq. I used it at night for a week or two and it cleared up. My dermatoses is not curable but I only have to use the foam once or twice a week and it stays away. Sometimes I can go for weeks without using the foam, but the symptoms return so I have to keep using it but not often. I'm back to wearing black/dark shirts. Two of my sisters are using the same medication and have seen the same improvements. Here is the website for information on Luxiq: http://www.luxiq.com/WebPages/patLuxiq.html
Hope this helps for some people that have scalp dermatoses. If he indeed has dandruff, I hope he finds relief from the other responses suggestions.

Selsun Blue is the most doctor recomended, I know when my nephew had cradle scalp the pedi recommended it, I've also noticed on mamasource that when people ask about the pedi always recommends it. I have a dry itchy scalp too and I use a shampoo with green tea and olive oil. I havent used the Selsun Blue in awhile, but thats because my daughter brings the green tea from her salon to me. When my hair gets to bad I'll use vinegar and listerine and it medicates my scalp for me. Good luck

Hi, I suggest you buy him the Selsun Blue Shampoo. You can find it in Wal Mart for around 6 dollars. Have him leave it on his hair for about 4 minutes before rinsing it off. Hope it helps. Good Luck!!

Any shampoo with tea tree oil will work great. Melaleuca is the same thing as tea tree oil. There are many brands of hair care that have this ingredient in it but you want to find one that has a higher concentration of the tea tree oil (melaleuca).

Hi G.,
Dandruff shampoos with tar do not work! Head and sholders does not work either. Most drug store ones have a lot of wax in they just coat the scalp to keep it from flaking off. You need something in the proper ph and something that gets rid of the flakes. The other issue is you probably have a cupboard full of shampoos that you don't like and can't return.
The product my husband uses is Nioxin. The cleanser (#1) and scalp therapy (#1)should be both used and as your shampoo and conditioner. You can buy it at salons or even Wal-mart. The larger sizes are cheaper but you could just get him to try a small one first.
It is actually a product for hair loss. Don't let this scare you. It was meant that way to clean the scalp and get the blood flowing to the root so your hair does not fall out as much. You end up keeping more hair on your head and less in the sink/shower. There are several different kinds but the #1 is the one for all kinds of scalp issues. The product is minty and leaves your scalp with a tingly feeling.
He needs to try it for at least a month, or a full bottle. The situation might get a little worse before it gets better because of the other shampoos he has used.
Best of all if he does not like the product, it is 100% refundable if you have it recomended by someone in a professional salon. (not drugstore or kroger!) In the end it should not cost you any more, because you can use much less than a drug store product. (more is not always better when it comes to quantity)
I hope you give it a try, I guarantee he will love it. Good luck

My 6 month old and 2 year old suffered from this too and the ped recommended selsun blue shampoo.

Also, he may have dry and itchy scalp too-there is a shampoo called Kera Care Dry and Itchy Scalp at Ulta, JCpenney, and other salon stores that sell beauty supplies. It worked miracles for me and my daughters too.

He may also try the dry and itchy scalp hair creme or some type of oil (Olive, Coconut, tea tree, etc. )applied to the scalp after washing to moisturize.

I have dealt with the this same issue for a few years now. It was so frustrating for me that I began to pray about it (God cares about every area of our lives). I tried a lot of things and quite recently I found the answer to my prayer. I saw Head & Shoulders Intensive Treatment shampoo(blue bottle)at Wal-Mart and decided to try it. It made a difference after the first day! I haven't had a problem since. Hope this helps, God bless!

It's not a home remedy, but he might want to see a dermatologist.

Dandruff can be caused by a too oily or too dry scalp.

My mom had bad dandruff, she was unknowingly using the wrong kind of otc (over-the-counter) shampoo for her type scalp, and it was making things worse. The dermatologist was able to recommend otc products, and gave her a prescription that jump-started the process of eliminating her dandruff.

Hi G., try Tea Tree Oil. It's available at Vitamin World in the mall or any GNC type store in both shampoo and conditioner. I have Psoriasis and it when it was affecting my scalp the only relief I found was with this product. I've recommended it to many dandruff sufferers with great results.

Good luck!

Have you tried to use the Selsun Blue Shampoo?I have the same problem with my daughter and her father and they have it really bad.I tried everything and nothing has worked so I just started using Selsun Blue to see if it works. Also you can try using a hot oil treatment every time you wash his hair and see if that works also.
