Miralax, I don't mind if I have to give it to my DD all her life as long as I don't see her suffering.
I'm putting my son back on miralax. Unfortunately he inherited my horrible constipation. It's really bad for him and it hurts horribly when he goes. He hates prune juice but drinks slot of water. How can I get him on a schedule of going every day.

my daughter is the same way. The best thing I have found it just regular miralax and I bought her fiber gummies. She takes 2 gummies every morning and then mirlaxa every few days or some times everyday. But as long as I keep that up she is good. My doc said once she is much older it will be better but while she is young just keep her poop as soft as possible.
two words..fig newtons, they are yummy and toddler sized and they help you poop

Is there a reason that he is so backed up? Is it a milk allergy or lactose thing? This was my son's problem, and so I switched to lactose free milk and have been feeding him yogurt (also lactose free) every day and it has really helped him out. All the natural probiotics have helped his stomach, maybe you should also try it out and hope for the best.
What does his doctor say or suggest?
pear juice works just as good as prune juice and tastes better too.
peaches pears help with poo.
per my pediatrician.
grapes and apricaots too..
You can't.
Many people don't go every day, it's not a problem. When you don't go for a week, then it becomes a problem. My daughter went for 26 days without a bowel movement when she was that age. (yes, we did take her to the doctor and well as a specialist)
Some things that will help...
- try a teaspoon of mineral oil each night before bedtime
- drink lots of water
- you DON'T want to drink a lot of juice, no more than 8oz a day, you can try pear juice
- lots of fruits and veggies
Whole grain bread, waffles, bagels and oatmeal for breakfast,
Fibrous veggies and fruits,
No bananas or cheese,
Diluted prune or pear juice or smoothies with 100% juice, some milk and ice,
No more than 16 oz of milk a day,
Lots of water,
Fiber gummies (these need lots of water to work, as does the Miralax)
Make sure he is exercising every day, running, jumping, chasing a soccer ball, whatever he likes to get things moving through his body,
And know you may never get him to go every day, some people don't. My guy is 3 and just now over the past month gotten to going every other day, and for him that is regular. Potty training was a pain, literally, because he tried to hold it, so do everything you can before you get going with that so it will not be such an ordeal for him.
Have you considered that you and your son could be gluten-intolerant? Constipation is a common symptom. Moms often pass their gut flora on to their babies in the birth process. If this is the underlying cause of your trouble, increasing fiber in the form of whole wheat and multi-grain breads, cereals, etc. will make your problem worse.
It is very simple to determine if gluten could be your problem. Just eliminate it from your diet for at least 2 weeks (a month would be better) and see how you feel. You'll want to completely eliminate all gluten; bread, cereal, pasta and all processed foods like cookies, crackers, etc. Substitute rice based products.
Also, you need to build a healthy gut flora. Go to the health food store and get a good probiotic supplement (found in the refrigerated section; powdered, capsule or liquid). Mix it in with your organic greek yogurt or kefir daily. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. You may also want to cut back or eliminate dairy foods like milk and cheese.
Do some research on the internet to get a better feel for if this could help you. Kerri Knox, RN has a site called easy immune health which is very informative.
I know the thought of making a radical dietary change can be overwhelming. But if you see that it can help you and you can avoid a lifetime of pharmaceutical drugs (which always have side effects and sometimes don't really fix the problem.)it is so worth it.
Good luck to you!!
As much as this will suck for him, there is something called Fleet suppositories that you can use. They are non medicated and you may have to cut them in half. I had to do this for my daughter as an infant. I don't know if this is common, but when she got older, if I would give her more than one cup of apple juice...she would always go.
I also have started to take some supplements that really help with it. If you would like some info on it...in box me and I will send it to you.
When one of my girls was about 19 months, actually until she was about 2 1/2, she was horribly constipated also. It was so tough watching her suffer. We tried so many things. She did not have a problem with milk itself but we found that she drank way too much of it. She would drink 4 or 5 10-oz glasses a day. We tried suppositories and all they did was make her cry and scream. I bought Senokot and it did work for a while but then no more. She hated prune juice and prunes. But when I gave her Juicy Juice, not diluted, I found that she had no problem. JJ is 100% juice so that was our key. Whenever she got stuck, we gave her extra juice.
When my 4 yr old had a short stint of it, we got JJ and it solved it in no time. One other thing that has helped if we catch in time, drinking warm water. My husband swears that in Mexico, when someone could not go, they gave them warm water--a full cup--and it solved it. I have seen it work if caught early enough for the kids.
Steady miralax and some roughage in his diet... they also have fleet strips, that dissolve in the mouth...
but for steady...i would try juice and roughage (sp?)
wouldnt hurt to get advice from doc ya know. my son and daughter are both constipated...
Please do not use Miralax. It is nothing more than a horrible chemical that is man made and used to go into things such as antifreeze!!! There are much better, natural things you can give him instead like a probiotic (Culturel makes a kids verson that can go in liquids) or Pedia lax made by fleet is safe and effective as well. Check to see if he ( and possible you) are lactose intolerant in the mean time by cutting out all dairy and seeing what happens there.
Good luck

Have you tried Benefiber? My son went thru the same thing at about the same age. Poor thing would walk around trying to go but he couldn't. We did Miralax for a few weeks and it made things worse. I think it was causing cramping but he didn't know how to express that at the time. My ped then recommended Benefiber and it was amazing. It got him to go with no cramping or loose movements. We kept him on it for a month or so then weaned it off and he hasn't had a problem since. I mixed it in a little juice/water or even in applesauce. It has no flavor and dissolves well in water. Good luck- I know how heartbreaking it is to see them suffer and not be able to help right away!
