Severe Abdomenal Pain Each Month..

Hello ladies,

I had a baby nearly 5 months ago. The first 1-2 cycles I had were completely normal - not much cramping, nothing out of the ordinary. Then after that things went haywire. Around the time I should be ovulating I get this horrible, severe cramping pain. Its so bad I don't want to walk or stand up (which is what i have right now.) It almost feels like I have throbbing pain shooting down the front of my thighs - along with the cramps. Then once my period actually starts I have horrid pain for 2 solid days - its so bad I have to take the left over pain medicine from when I had our baby - I don't like taking that because it makes me soooo drowsy, but I can't stand the pain.

About 5 or 6 years ago I was diagnosed with ovarian cysts - which were horrendous..especially when it ruptured. Have u suffered with cysts - if so, what can be done about them? I plan on finding a dr. soon because I can't stand another month of this horrible pain..especially with being affraid of what is going on! :0(

Thanks so much

What can I do next?

That sounds pretty miserable =(

I would assume the hormones of pregnancy and birth could cause the pre-existing condition (cysts) to crop back up. But also sounds like the symptoms of endometriosis.

There is also a condition called mittelschmerz which is what they call painful ovulation. Some opt to treat it and other extreme menstrual discomfort w/birth control pills. However, when it becomes "too much" the Mayo Clinic site recommends: "However, contact your doctor if a new pelvic pain becomes severe, if it's accompanied by nausea or fever, or if it persists — any of which could indicate you have a condition more serious than mittelschmerz, such as appendicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease or even an ectopic pregnancy."

I was going to ask this question. My ovulation pain is so severe that i have to take perscription pain meds and a heating pad. It is every month :( Fortunately it never lasts longer then 20-30 minutes. It is usually about 4 am or 5 am that it occurs...not fun! Thank you to the moms that mentioned mittelschmerz, i had never heard of that. I have even had surgery to make sure it was not other issues. I wonder why my dr did not mention mittelschmerz to me...

My only advice is to put a heating pad on and take whatever you take for pain the second you feel it. The good news is that it always subsides. I am so glad that you asked this question... i was starting to think i was crazy...lol!

I had a tumor in my ovary & I didn't have symptoms like that at all, if it's any reassurance.

I agree, see a doctor ASAP, because even if it's not anything serious, he/she will be able to give you good recommendations about treatment of pain. Feel better!!

I have severe ovulation pain too. If I don't take ibuprofen I can't stand up straight for about 8 hours. I chart my cycles, so I know it happens exactly when I'm ovulating. I asked my midwife and she said that ovulation pain is pretty normal. I would talk to your doctor about the period pain though b/c of your history with ovarian cysts.

See your ob/gyn. Anytime you have new serious pain, it's important to see your doctor. sounds like you have to find one. If you have insurance you can find the names of doctors on their web site or be calling their office.

If you do not have insurance and are low income you can go to a county clinic which will charge on a sliding fee scale.

I've had ovarian cysts with similar symptoms. They resolved themselves. My daughter has had an ectopic pregnancy with similar symptoms. I also had endometriosis with excruciating pain the first days of my period. When I was younger I used bc pills to regulate my periods and lessen the pain. I've also had debilitating pain as the result of an inclusion cyst that my body made after I had abdominal surgery. I had to have that taken out with surgery. During the process of diagnosis that time they suggested that I could have ovarian cancer. Whew! Thank goodness it was only a cyst filled with a quart of fluid.

You really need to see a doctor so that he can rule out more serious causes and hopefully give you a way to reduce the pain without the prescription pain pills.

When I had pain mid cycle and with my period I was told to take Ibuprofen starting a few days before my period was to start and all during my period even if the pain lessened. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory. It's inflammation that causes the pain. That did help some.

Do see a doctor.

I get small cysts when I ovulate, and it can be really painful. I was on my way to the ER to get checked for apendicitis when I realized that it was ovulation. Obviously if the symptoms are new, you should check with your doctor. But if it is just middleschmertz, then you can try a warm pack rested on your abdomen and some advil.

No real advice for the period pain. Hope you get some answers soon.
