Settled on Two Possible Areas -- Relocating to Phoenix Area

Thank you all for your indispensible advice. We have settled on either Scottsdale or Peoria as places to look for housing. Any schools to avoid within these areas? Any neighborhoods to avoid here? Also, we have jobs in downtown. What kind of commute are we looking at? The schools, as I understand it, are basically good. We'll probably be looking at an older home...things to consider?

What can I do next?

Karin, Scottsdale has a great school dist. My sister refuses to move out of the aera until all her kids are out of school.
You are going to be hard pressed to find a "bad" school in Scottsdale. If you are concerned about how the school is doing as far as testing goes...you can find thier scores on the arizona department of education web page. As a teacher, I think this only reflrcts a minor amount of the quality of education your student will get. Older homes are nice in this area... there is a dog parks too
Chaparral Park Dog Park -5401 N. Hayden Road Scottsdale
Horizon Park Dog Park -15444 N. 100th Street Scottsdale
Vista del Camino Park Dog Park -7700 E. Roosevelt Street Scottsdale
I do not know enough about Peoria to tell you good advice...

Karin: We live in McCormick Ranch and it is very kid friendly. Lots of parks within the community, kids playing everywhere. My son is too young for school, so I cannot give you advice there but we love living in McCormick Ranch. There are lots of older homes that are great - they just need updating since most are the original owners from the 1970's.

Hi Karin,

You absolutely want the Paradise Valley school district if you can afford it. Scottsdale however can be quite expensive for a single family home. Much more so than Peoria. As for value however it is the very best place to purchase in the entire metro area. For resale -it holds its value like none other. The commute to Peoria will be really long....but if that's OK also has very nice areas and you'll get more for your $$. Look into the Arrowhead area. If it were me though I don't know what your price range is..I would look into something in North Phoenix as is after Scottsdale an area that is steadily holding its value. You can still get alot more house for the money and the commute will be a dream compared to Peoria. AND can find affordable housing in some cute neighborhoods. And for schools, with open enrollment you can still get into Paradise Valley schools right next door. For the best value for money hands down in Scottsdale if you can do low $400's check out the zip code 85254. I know there are some pockets of homes you can still find in the low $400's there are really nice, with the PV school district, Phoenix (lower) taxes and Scottsdale address.

Good Luck!

Now are you aware of how expensive the houses are? The market out here has slowed but things are still pretty expensive especially older homes they are worse than newer homes. We are in the process of buying and we have been everywhere looking! The commute won't be abd but its a ways it really depends where you are at cause those cities are good size. Scottsdale is pricey for everything so I hope your jobs are good. I do wish you luck!

Hi Karin,

My family and I just moved to the Glendale Area from Los Angeles, CA. We decided on Glendale because we have some friends that live here too and when we would come out to visit we would stay with them and I loved the neighborhood. I work in the Title Insurance Business as an Admin. Assistant so I kind of knew that I needed to be close to downtown for any job possibilities. My realtor told me that if I wanted a NEW house that I would have to get outside of Phoenix and there would be a hefty commut involved. Well I love new houses but not at the risk at sitting in traffic for hours......so we went with an older house 1978 (which by the way I consider new...LOL) it's nice, good size, and has a diving pool! I considered the commute to work as first priority, schools second, and shopping and parks third. Scotttsdale is very expensive but nice and if you have the money....go for it! Communiting from Scottsdale to Downtown shouldn't be that bad but it all depends on what part of Scottsdale you choose......South of course being closer.....Peoria is close to Glendale and is a good area too..........Good Luck!

Hi Karin

I do not live in either place but my mother in law lives in Scottsdale. I love the area she lives in, around Mcdonald and Hayden /Pima area. The houses have gotten pretty pricey in Scottsdale. My husband and I are hoping that in the next few years they will come down abit so we can move there. But If you can afford it, its a great place to be. I dont know Peoria to well. Good Luck. And if you need to get prequalified I am a Loan Officer, (very slow one right now) email me and I could go over things with you. :)
