Sensitive Skin or Latex Allergy?

A couple times the day care has called saying that my son (18 months) looks like he has a few hives - normally neck/face area. We couldn't find the source of the irritation. A few weeks ago, he had tubes put in his ears, and on his back, where the electrode pads were located, you could see the outline in a red irritated shape for about 4 days post surgery. Then, last week a friend bit him. (Gotta love this age...) We put some neosporin and a band-aid over the spot before he went to bed. In the morning, I removed the band-aid, but we could see the red squares where the band-aid attached for several days.

I stopped by his daycare today over lunch to give my son some ear drops and his face was once again all red and splotchy. The teachers said they'd been out on the playground this morning since it's such a nice day. The play area does have the rubberized ground as opposed to pebbles or sand. He's wearing a long-sleeved onesie and pants since it's still a little chilly - so the only parts exposed would have been hands and face. I've left a note for the director of the daycare to see if she can find out if there's latex in the ground - but I'm sure it's going to take a day or so until she can do the research and get back to me.

Has anyone else experienced any similar symptoms?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I think it's definitely more a sensitivity to the adhesives. I had an ah-ha moment last night when I realized the pacifier he uses for nap/night time is latex!!

As for the redness at the playground, I think for now, I'll just chalk it up to sensitive skin (and being a fair skinned blonde baby). He had a few bouts of eczema when he was younger, so maybe the combination of cool air, wind, running around like a toddler just does him in. Or, maybe it's one of the plants/shrubs at the playground that's more bothersome than those at our local park.

For now, we'll just choose alternate methods of dressing any injuries and avoid things with adhesive!

Could be the ground. But working at a day care we have noticed that some of the children get splotchy with diaper wipe use. We wash hands after bathroom/ diaper breaks, when we come inside and before and after meals. With the little ones we keep a box of wipes in the kitchen area and they get wiped down after everything. We have two children that get red and blotchy each time. Directors and parents are working on that one. And, my children do that too with band aids- It was not the latex, but the adhesive.

I, too, have had mild reactions to the adhesives in electrodes and adhesive bandages.

Also, for the splotches that appear on his face, my baby has had some splotches on her neck and chin. Pedi says it could be excema from dry air, or it could be a combination of dry air and spit. Saliva starts the digestion process, so when you get it on your face, combined with skin already weakened from dry winter air, the saliva starts breaking down the skin a bit. Is he a thumb sucker? Getting new teeth in? Any reason to have more saliva on his face right now? Put vaseline on the spots overnight. Lanolin will work, too.

At my son's school, some of the teachers wear gloves (like those used for diapering...not sure if latex) when they put on sunscreen. You might want to inquire about that. But I also know my son is seriously sensitive to adhesives (not latex) and frequently gets red and blotchy outside when it's cold or windy. He has very sensitive skin. He's a redhead, not that it should matter, but because his skin is so fair, it's easier to see the blotchiness than on my darker, older son. Good luck sorting it out.

Wow. That was going to be my answer too. It's good to know I'm not the only one allergic to adhesives. Not sure how to get around it all the time, but if you try the "wound" type bandages they don't have that issue and work much better anyway. You can cut them to any size b/c they are pricey. The playground redness could have been caused by a ton of things.
You could test for a latex sensativity by testing out some bandages too. If it still happens with a latex free bandage, you know it wasn't the bandage (or at least not only the bandage).
Best wishes.

it could also be from latex gloves if they are maybe grabing his hands and or face when they have gloves on during diaper changing time. as for the band aid red spots I personally am allergic to the glue on band aids and medical tape and the birth control patch anythign like that, it doesn't itch or hurt just get red for a few days. Also it is possible to have a sensitivty to latex and not a true allergy keep that in mind

I don't know how much help this will be, but when we found out my daughter had a latex allergy she had blisters where the latex had touched her skin. Im sure there can be different severitys of it though. Just thought i would tell you how i first found out.

I've personally experienced similar symptoms to the electrodes and bandaids leaving a red mark for a long time. I've discovered I have a sensitivity to adhesive. It isn't a problem other than ugly and can sometimes mask other problems. I had surgery when I was 15 weeks pregnant, and the mark on my arm from that sheet of plastic tape they put over the IV was still there when I went to give birth!

Other than that, have you checked into the usual list of suspects for irritations? Any change in laundry detergents, new clothes that didn't get washed (I was the worst at that!) before wearing, new soaps or lotions or shampoos, etc... I also found that during the cold weather months (there are so few of them here in TX) my daughter would frequently have a sort of rashlike thing - it was pretty much simple heatrash just presenting in different places. She has a very hot head, and would sweat like a crazy child!

Good luck, mama!

Since I suffer the same thing & my youngest does also, I can tell you that it is probably a sensitivity to the adhesive on all of those things. As far as the rash after being outside, it could be a sensitivity to the cleanser they use or a reaction to any residue left after being sprayed with pesticide. Pesticide residue doesn't necessarily mean the daycare is using pesticide there either. We went through a year of "mystery rashes" with my son. Slowly narrowed it down to the fact that he broke out everytime he played outside and usually shortly after a rain. A neighbor a few houses down was having his yard chemically treated for bugs. Since we live downhill (and all boys LOVE to play in mud puddles), my son was getting sick from the chemicals that were being washed into our yard from his.
Wish you luck with this because I know it can be very, very frustrating and there's little the doctor can do except prescribe steroids (yuck) because it's really hard to trace. We didn't figure it out until the neighbor moved, the truck stopped coming around & my son's "problem" disappeared as mysteriously as it had appeared.

sounds like allergies not necessarily latex. Give him a baking soda bath when that happens if he is over 2 benedryl. Your probably going to have to a scratch test. find an allergist or internest. any more questions just ask.
