Hello all!

My daughter is 4 and has wavy hair that gets tangled very easily. It gets more than tangled sometimes - it get's knotty since she is a bit of a wild child. I use detangler and conditioner but it doesn't help all that much. My hair is straight as a pin so I am clueless.

Any suggestions? Brands?

Thanks!

My youngest has spirals...what i have noticed is that you cannot brush it dry. It helps to use tons of conditioner and brush it very wet. A little bit of anti frizz may help.

Hi. I agree with Tracy M.
I would also add the following:
1. Comb through conditioner in hair when wet, and then rinse conditioner.
2. comb through wet hair (not brush)
3. don't brush curly hair.
4. you can rub a little vitapointe (a teensy drop) onto the dry hair if needed. My nanny did this for me as a child, and my hair was styled very nicely by her.

Detanglers don't work, I use a leave-in conditioner like Biolage, Dove Anti-Friz (it comes in a small gray pump bottle), or BJ's brand (it is identical to the Biolage and a lot cheaper). With the BJ's brand I buy the tub of conditioner which my daughter and I use once a week or more if necessary and leave it in for about 5 minutes or more then rinse it out and then I apply the leave in conditioner, combing it out with a wide toothed comb and lastly I let it air dry unless I really have to go somewhere and need it dried immediately. Our hair is long enough to tie it back with a scrunchy and let it dry naturally.

My toddler has my crazy thick, curly hair and it definitely can get out of control! I just pull it up into two pony tails on the top of her head. It looks cute and keeps her hair under control. When short on time I just pull it all up in a pony tail on the top of her head and let the curls fall down so it looks like a loose bun. Braiding is a great idea too.

I use burts bees shampoo/conditioner because it has fewer chemicals than other kinds of shampoo. I only wash her hair (& mine) 3 times per week. The natural oils in hair can help keep tangles under control.

I have very curly hair, so I have been dealing w/it for years! A good conditioner is a must! Lately I have been using Panteene and has been working well. I leave it in my hair as long as I'm in the shower.Comb through hair in shower while the conditioner is in. A good leave in conditioner also works very well. Never brush curly hair wet or dry! Use a comb (Large teeth.) Also, something to put in hair after washed. A styling cream to help control it. Frizz ease makes some good ones.(At the drug store). My 2 daughters did not get my curls, but their hair is thick. I use Suave detangling spray For kid's in green bottle w/octopus on it) every morning on their hair to get out the snarles from sleeping. It works very well. I hope that helps!

Get a cute short cut until she is old enough to take care of it herself.

My daughter is biracial and has changing hair from big curls to coily hair. We found the same problem with tangling and do all the same things. Most defrizzers work, but are full of chemicals. We found something close to the best option, Deva Curl, which a friend (who has coily hair) recommended. It's almost all natural if you look at the ingredients, but isn't generally something you'd see advertised for kids. It has worked wonders for us and still looks natural. You still need to use tons of conditioner, but on non-bath days or after naps we spray it damp, comb it, rub some of the Deva Curl on our hands and gently smooth it through her hair by running our fingers through the curls. I concentrate it on problem areas and then let it sit. Don't touch it after that. Please don't cut it short... I wish I started this earlier. Good luck and let us know how it goes! I got a big pump on drugstore.com with a discount. It's expensive but will work wonders and is worth every penny. A little goes a long way. We can relate!

In my experience, the detangler makes the problem worse. My 6 year old and I had the same issue. Ours is brown and I have a blonde who doesn't have that problem...not sure if the color always matters but it does in our home. Also the type of water u have could be a factor. We are on well water. I have found head and shoulders smooth and silky works GREAT! it works on my two year old too:) hope this helps.

Learn to braid. lol! wide-tooth combs are a must-have... Start at the bottom of her hair and work your way up about 1-2 inches at a time, even if it doesn't *look* tangled.
