Dear moms,

My 12 year old daughter had a seizure in church last Sunday. She has never had one before. She has fainted because she hadnt' eaten enough and it was really hot maybe three months ago, but this was different. She went all stiff and shakey. She was incoherent for about 10 minutes.
We have been to the pediatrician. He took a urine and a blood test, all came back fine. She went in Thursday an EEG. We are being referred to a pediatric neurologist. THe EEG test will take until later this week for them to find any results.
Does anyone know if she is at risk for another? She really scared us, it came out of no where, in the sanctuary. She had already had a good breakfast, it wasn't hot, she was not on her period.
Is there anything I can we can do to minimize this ever happening again?
I read that some people only have one in a lifetime so I am hoping she has hit her quota.
Thank you, moms.

This could be hypoglycemia. Please go online and look up the symptoms.

It is a fact that with those who have an underlying condition -it will usually get worse or more pronounced when puberty hits.

Hormones play a key role in so many organ functions.

You really won't know anymore until the EEG comes back. I was diagnosed with Juvenile Myclonic Epilepsy when I was 15, after I had a grand mal seizure, which is basically what stiff and lying on the ground seizures are called. However, there were warning signs I had for 6 months that something was going on, and I didn't tell my parents any of them when they were happening because I was afraid. Here are some things to look for: dizziness, headaches, blank stares (often mistaken for daydreaming in my case, but this is daydreaming to the max- you could snap a finger in front of my face and I would still stare), every once in awhile an involuntary jerk of my arm, and in the months before my grand mal, I would black out for like a second and fall down.
With all that being said, having one seizure does not mean she has epilepsy. My nephew just had a seizure and he has had all normal EEG's and what was told to my sister is some kids have sleep issues (he was woken out of a deep sleep). Could she have been overly tired? One of the major triggers for any person with a seizure disorder is lack of sleep. And, I remember being 12 and staying up all night and sleeping late the next day :) Other triggers are poor nutrition, flashing lights (think strobe lights), and alcohol and/or drugs (not saying at 12 she is doing those, just something to keep in mind for later in life if she is diagnosed with a seizure disorder.)
If she is diagnosed with a seizure disorder, many people have "intuition" (for lack of a better term) that one is coming. I have a certain dizziness I feel, some people smell a funny smell or see a certain kind of light. She might come to recognize this.
I will pray for all of you, that this was a one time "fluke" thing that happened. If not, please know that it can be controlled and she can live a normal life. Initially, it can be hard trying to get the right dosage of meds, but my disorder has really just become an inconveniance in my life and not something that defines me. I have been able to live a "normal" life and have been able to have children (and 100% healthy children at that!)
Please message me if you have any more questions! Remember, 1 in 4 people will have a seizure once in their life, without ever being diagnosed with a seizure disorder or ever having another one. There is a great chance that this is it!

there is no way to know, my son has a seizure disorder. but having just one could have been a "fluke" or it could be due to something, if they find something in the eeg they will tell you. it might be something that you need to watch for...it might be something that happens once a year, i have heard of kids having just one or two a year out of nowhere...good luck & hang in there!!

The results are needed to know what is happening. However, please educate yourself on the alternative/natural approaches to health: What we eat or don't eat can make a huge difference in some situations. There are deficiencies and many harmful additives in the American diet.
False estrogens in our environment, some from cleaning products, can throw off the hormones.

Stick with only fresh veggies and fruits, chicken, and add a source of essential fatty acids and an actual probiotic. Any health store supplement-employee can help you find these often missing and essential nutrients for health and a good immune system. I pray your daughter is fine, that you will pray for guidance in all this, and urge you to balance out what traditional doctors have to say with more information about these health building ideas. There are giant problems with using pharmaceuticals, and they are sometimes being prescribed without mention of side effects. Just because a doctor says its the thing to do, doesn't mean there isn't an option or five out there. So many doctors are still treating SYMPTOMS and not getting to the root cause. Just because they choose to make money having testing done doesn't mean they haven't already decided they are going to TRY a pharmaceutical on your daughter! Don't accept this kind of health c a r e! {?}

Eliminating processed foods is a really good idea: Anything in a box or bag needs to have the ingredients read:
If there is anything you don't actually know what it means, don't ingest it: There are alternatives with very simple ingredients available at the health food stores. Did you know the food industry is continuously lobbying Congress to not put the ingredients on food products?

Even 'Natural Flavoring' can actually be MSG, a know brain neurotoxin that is on labels under 24 different names, including monosodium glutamate! And High Fructose Corn Syrup IS an addictive brain neurotoxin, also, regardless of the money being spent to imply differently in ads on tv! Check out my ad free 10 year old website,

and also do a Google Search for Mercola.com and seizures: He has much information about many topics and always tells about what's behind things and offers solutions/information!

Also, a Google Search for Seizures Alternative Medicine will yield a lot of good links!

I'm like Molly. I was diagnosed with JME at 12yrs old. My only "symptoms" prior to any seizure was arm jerking with lack of sleep that would last for a little while after I initially woke up. Have you ever noticed this in your daughter? I wasn't diagnosed till after my 2nd grand mal seizure (this was like 19yrs ago). Just keep an eye on her and wait for the EEG to be done. She could have had a seizure due to hypoglycemia like someone else said or could be some other reason all together. Good luck and feel free to PM me if you want!

It's good that you are getting it checked out. I used to pass out for no apparent reason 1 or 2 times a year. It is not uncommon to seize during a fainting spell. Blood draws and standing for too long used to bring them on for me but have had a few instances where there were no triggers. I didn't see a neurologist but did get a cardiac checkup. The Cardiologist said it was most likely a vasovagal syndrome. It was nothing to worry about and I haven't had an instance for years. I used to keep a vial of smelling salts with me just in case. I could feel the fainting spell coming on and the salts would prevent me from going out. Good luck and I hope her EEG comes back good!

My son began having seizures when he was 5 years old. The neurologist and pediatrician could not find any reason(s) why he started having them and just told me that sometimes seizures or childhood epiliepsy is common and that children often "grow out of them." After his initial seizure, he began having them on a regular basis and each time was very scary. The neurologist prescribed Gabitril and it worked, but PRAYER was what I prescribed and it definitely did the job! Everytime my son had a seizure, I would pray over him and thank GOD in advance for his healing and that each seizure would be his last. By the time my son turned 13 he was seizure free and hasn't seen a neurologist since. He is now almost 21. I wish you the best and many blessings. Your daughter will be fine.

If a person has had one seizure, they are more likely than average to have another. You need to not be scared or freaked out about this, instead become educated. Both of my daughters (but none of my sons) have epilepsy, one severe, the other not even severe enough to be on medication at this point. The results of the EEG may tell you what you need to know, but not necessarily. Seizures can only be caught on an EEG when they are happening, hence it is hard to make an official diagnosis of a seizure disorder. Bottom line is, whatever the diagnosis, or whether or not the seizures continue, your daughter can have a happy, productive life. Understanding how to respond to a seizure is most important. The main thing is not to lose your cool, remain calm, and protect while the person is seizing. My oldest daughter only has a few seconds warning before she seizes and we all know the signs. She only seizes if she forgets her meds (she is on Lamictal) and this will happen within a few hours beyond her dosage time. At her worst, before they found the right meds, it took her a good week to gradually get back her short term memory. (City she lived in, her husband of 6 months, place of employment) The really good news is that the treatments for seizure disorders these days are leaps and bounds what they were 20 years ago.
Molly L has given you very good advice. Her experiences are the same as my daughters experience.
My oldest daughter is now 37, has an important job in the medical field, a wonderful husband, great friends and a full life. She will be on meds the rest of her life and as Molly states, they are just one of life's little inconveniences.
My younger daughter was around the same age as your daughter, (she is now 18), when she was diagnosed. The onset of her menstrual cycle reeked havoc with her. Her seizures presented in different ways than her older sister, beginning with severe migraines. Both of my daughters tend to show worse symptoms mid cylce and the day of so before their period begins, but not once their period actually begins.
I'd be happy to share any experiences I've had over the past 30 years of dealing with this if you want to private message me.

So sorry to hear of your daughter's health problem. Has she had any Gardisil vaccinations? I have heard of a possible connection to this vaccine and fainting/seizures.
