Seeking Used Kids Stores in Phila Area

Hi Moms,
I'm looking for some stores that sell used kids toys and clothes. I'm looking for some inexpensive toys/clothes for my 8 month old, and hate to spend $15 on a new toy that he may or may not even respond to (plus, we like to recycle used things when we can!). I live in Philadelphia, but would drive to the suburbs if there is a good consignment shop around. I haven't had much luck through google or craigslist. Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

The two Philadelphia thrift stores I go to most often are Circle Thrift on Frankford Ave. in Fishtown (proceeds benefit Mennonite Central Committee [MCC], which does overseas missions) and Super Thrift on Aramingo at the Thriftway Shopping Center.

For special, I drive to Care N Share in Souderton, about 30 miles away. They have EVERYTHING--kids' clothes, kids' toys, household goods (we got a fabulous dining room set and living room rug), you name it, in three stores. Proceeds benefit MCC.

Good luck,

Jean

I would find a big goodwill and go there. I bought several nice toys and clothes for my two year old son. I go to the one in stratford,nj. I also go sometimes to the one in glassboro,nj. consignments shops are fine but sometimes more expensive.

You should try Kid to Kid in Drexel Hill, PA. They have kids clothes, toys, highchairs, strollers, etc. They are usually pretty reasonable and have really nice things.

I don't know of any in the city, but I'm sure somebody reading your post will. There is a Kid to Kid on Route 1 in Drexel Hill, a shop called Twice as Nice in Narberth and another shop on Main St. Manayunk across from Potterybarn. You can search the internet or yellow pages for Childrens Consignment stores in the city or try Craigslist for secondhand toys. I've had a lot of luck there.

In the Roxborough section of the city, there is the Salvation Army store on Pechin Street. It is huge, they have all kinds of stuff. There is a new second hand store on Ridge Avenue, directly across from the Superfresh (by Domino Lane). I haven't been in it yet, but it looks interesting. There is another thrift store on Ridge, closer to Green Lane, right next store to the Supercuts. It is newer, and so it doesn't have as much merchandise, but it is VERY inexpensive. (I got a toy car for ten cents... mostly because my daughter wouldn't put it back.)

On Main Street, the used clothing store someone mentioned is called "Second Time Around." It mostly sells "boutique" brand clothes, at fairly high prices. (Most things well above $15.00)

I also have to say that for toys... NOTHING beats yard/garage sales. If there aren't very many around your neighborhood, come out to Roxborough/City Line Avenue area and just drive around some Saturday morning. You'll probably see tons of them.

B.,

There is a bi-annual HUGE kids sale at COS (Church of the Saviour) in Wayne. It's a consignment sale with the rest of the proceeds going to the Heritage School. Two words: It's awesome!!! Not to mention very cost effective and worth the trip.
Toys, clothes, cribs, swings, etc. Everything you need. This year it is Saturday, Oct. 3rd. I'm not sure exactly when it starts in the morning, but get there as early as you can for the good deals and to avoid the line to get in. The great thing too is that you can get all your Fall clothes, then in the Spring you're set for the summer!
I'd look it up on the Heritage School website (not sure what the site address is).
Oh yeah, make sure you bring lots of cash b/c I think they only take cash! I'll be there!

Have you tried Freecycle.com. It's a place where people post things they are looking for and also things they want to give away. I've seen people giving away baby clothes and toys on there. Give it a try.

Kid 2 Kid in Drexel Hill is nice. I have gotten some things for my son with the tags still on and have paid much less than if I got bought them at a retail shop. Go out City Line Ave, cross over rt 3 and it's in a shopping center on your right (cross street Burmont Ave). Good Luck!
