Seeking Suggestions from Working Parents on Childcare During the Summer Only

My husband and I are full time working parents and the day has come. I know it is a year from now but our (first child) daughter will be starting kindergarten at a private school fall of 2009. Our current schedules will accomodate the school year but didn't think about the summer of 2010. What are full time working parents doing for their child(ren) for the summer. We are hoping that I will be blessed in the near future to become a stay at home mom. Until this happens, I'm seeking help on the options there are out there as I'm starting to stress out about this. Thanks to all.

What can I do next?

I don't know where you live, but for a few summers I sent my kids to the program at St. Peter's Lutheran School (we are not Lutheran) In Arlington Heights. It was reasonable and very flexible. They did some great things with the kids - movies, skating, water games, etc.
Some of my friends opted for the park district which they said was great too.

Good luck.

I can recommened a great licensed in-home daycare. The woman who takes care of my 2 boys lives in logan square. I have the excact opposite problem. I work during the school year and then I want to take my kids out of daycare during the summer so I can play with them. If you are interested in her name please let me know and I will pass it along to you.

There are a ton of college and high school students that want a nanny job over the summer. You place an ad on sittercity.com and you will have many people to choose from.

Without knowing what town you live in, check out the park district programs. Many have "summer camp" and some have before and/or after child care programs with it. After that you may have to try either mom's who run in home care programs, or find a mom her age, who would not mind having a built in playmate for the summer and earn some money for the summer. As a stay at home mom for a few years, I often picked up some extra cash watching friends children when their regular centers were closed for a couple weeks, or gramma was on vacation etc...

When I was a teacher, I worked as a nanny for the summers. Ask local schools if you can post a job there. Teachers are great because they are older than a typical babysitter and there are a lot of background checks. Good luck!

I would look into a park district daycamp. They usually run about the same hours as school would. Good luck.

I'm not sure where you live, but I know of a good licensed in-home daycare in Palatine. Both my daughter and son go there, and I know that the woman who runs it tends to have openings in the summer. If you would like more info, please send me a personal message. Thanks...

You could ask at the school where your daughter will be attending to see if they have any suggestions. Daycare programs typically run summer long. I work at a Christian preschool in Palatine that is open year-round for our full-time students and has a summer program, but I don't know if that might be a bit far for you.

Most people in my area do the park district camps.

Since you have awhile before you need it, here are a few things to remember. In my area you have to register in January. Yes, you read that correctly. Also if your company has a Flexible Spending Account you should find out if that qualifies as childcare and you can put it through for reimbursement. Finally, you will probably have to pay before and/or after childcare because most camps are 9-3 or so.

Good luck!

I would start with where your 2 1/2 year old will be during that time. It's quite possible that she can go there for the summer. DayCare Centers have summer programs. Park Districts often have good summer programs. In home childcare workers sometimes need kids for the summer. Students studying to teach would LOVE the opportunity to work with kids over the summer. You can post at the local community colleges and universities.
Good Luck!
