I just recently found out I am expecting a baby due Feb. '10. This is my first baby and I am recently moved to UT. I need to find a fabulous doctor, hospital, birth plan...the whole nine yards! I would love to hear your suggestions and referrals for all of this ahead of me. I live in Sandy and would prefer to find someone in the SLC Valley. Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the useful information. I really appreciate it. Keep it coming!!!

Also - I am interested in your experiences with the different hospitals close to me in Sandy such as St. Marks, Alta View, the new Murray IHC, etc. I want a private room, warm environment, and the top medical care for emergency or distressed situations. I would love to say I am planning on a natural child birth but honestly I know I will want all the drugs I can have!

Thank you again!!! Loves.

I delivered at Intermountain Medical Center and was really happy there. I was a high risk pregnancy and my doctor was located at the hospital. I was there all the time and they were always really great to me.

I know you have had a lot of input, but I thought I would still add my own. I work at IMC (the Murray hospital in the womans Center) I absolutely love the midwives there. The are located in the hospital and are there for each delivery. The delivered my last baby by surprise (I was at work when I delivered...ooops, wrong hospital!) and LOVED MY natural childbirth experience. Also if complications come up they transfer care to the most amazing high risk MD's. And they will absolutely still check on you and be by your side. I am debating another baby and will go to the midwives myself!

Dr. Jeanne Gemmell at Avenues' Women's Center. She is great because she has had children of her own, both medicated and unmedicated so she can really relate to women in labor and the decisions they are making. The office is just women OB/GYN's and NP's and they are all wonderful. Address: 455 E. South Temple, # 202, Salt Lake City, UT, phone: ###-###-####. Dr. Gemmell delivered all of my babies at LDS Hospital, and it was a great experience. The new IMC hospital in Murray is beautiful and very well set up for patients.

I'm a big fan of Dr. Jason Johnson in Salt Lake. He is a very gifted doctor! I also love Julie Jones CNM, in Riverton and Danielle Demeter CNM who works in SL and Park City.

Of course I'm biased because I am a doula but I truly believe that every pregnant mama needs one! Find one early on and you'll have a resource for all your question throughout your pregnancy. www.utahdoulas.org has a huge listing!

Hi! First of all, CONGRATS!! I am not sure if you have already found someone, but I would highly recommend our OB GYN Dr. Gregory Tanner. He is located right in Sandy (as I work in Sandy) at Alta View Hospital. He is really wonderful. Very personable, professional and we have had a great overall experience with him. He has been there since the beginning and delivered both our girls (so far!) and we will continue to choose him.
Hope this helps! Take care of yourself and your little one.

You can't go wrong with Dr. Jeff Barton at the new IHC Hostpital Womens Center in Murray right off I-15. He is the top C-Section Specialist in Utah (if needed). He always refers to the best pediatricians here in SLC and has an incredible rep.

I would suggest DR. Kathryn Walker. She delivered the last 3 of my 4 babies and she is wonderful. She is so kind and patient, always willing to answer questions and offer advice. One of the things i Loved most was seh was not trying to push and paticular birth plan, asked if we would be doing natural or medicated, just was very proactive. She works out of the Sandy womens center...Connected to altaview Hospital. On the 3rd floor above the maternity ward, which always made me feel comforatable that she was just upstairs should something happend during business hours and also that should there be any major problems..the Hospital is just down the hall. Her staff is great as well. Best of luck to you and you Baby. If you have any other questions about her in particular please feel free to let me know.

Dr. Vernon Yamashiro is an AWESOME OB-GYN. He delivers at St. Mark's, and I found my experience there to be very pleasant. I'm not sure if he is accepting new patients, but if you can get into him- DO. I had to switch to a different OBGYN after I had my last baby and we switched insurance and have hated both of the other doctors I've tried. I'm considering going back to him and just paying out of pocket- I like him THAT MUCH!

Check out the doctors at the new Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. All of them are extremely good, and they take most insurance plans. My doctor is Dr. Daniel Kaelberer. He's very good, but he's just one out of many who are great there. I also recommend Dr. Larkin and Dr. Bowman.

CONGRATS!! :D
I had Dr Stephen Terry as my OB for my 2 children and he is FABULOUS!! He is at the new IMC that Becky W gave you the links to. I had my 2nd at the new hospital and it was nice. I did not get an epidural and labored in the tub. the tubs are small, but they did their job. The nurses were fantastic. My only problem I had was that when it was time for me to deliver, they had a communication problem, they said "page Dr Terry" and the machine/pager thingy heard her say "page security" ... so we had security show up instead of my Dr being called. (kind of a funny story now. lol.) but he ended up not being there to deliver my baby so that was sad, but the doctor on call did everything needed to take care of us. :)
Best wishes!

He's a little out of your way but my last OB was Stephen Voss, great guy, very accomadating to a variety of birth plans (I had planned for a Doula, but it didn't work out- she was not able to be reached the night I went into labor) I was a bit nervous at first, because he's IHC (I really hate IHC), but turned out to be my best OB ever- right up with the nurse/midwife I had for my first.

It really depends on what insurance you have. But I go to Western OB/GYN (located at the Cottonwood Towers) They have some really great doctors but I go to Dr. Quinn. They are on the ground floor. I delivered my 2nd baby at the Intermountain Medical and I really liked my expierence there compared to delivering my 1st at St. Marks Hospital. Congratulations on being a mother for the first time. It is a really awesome experience. Good luck in finding a good doctor that fits you.

OMG I am SO glad that you asked! My last birth, even though it turned out with plenty of problems, could not have gone better! My husband works at the Univ of Utah and so we delivered there and I LOVED it! The nurses were awesome(except the NICU...) and everything turned out great in the end.
I originally had a midwife and doula, as I was going for a VBAC. It didnt work out and so I got the OB on call- luckily a family friend is one of the chief OB's and so he recommended this guy and he was spectacular. His name is Howard Sharp, and if you ever see the U's TV commercials, he's the OB on them. His practice is very full and he's often not accepting new patients, but email me for his secretary's name and number. She's also WONDERFUL.
My doula was spectacular as well. Her name is Jennifer McDonald and her website is http://utahbirthsupport.com/default.aspx
She was amazing. I cannot say enough good about her. If you've never heard of a doula, I'd highly recommend the service. Another thing you may want to look into is "The Business of Being Born" Its a documentary on childbirth in the United States and its extremelt educational and in many cases is dead on the money.
I'm pro natural birth. And not because I'm some crunchie hippy mom, but because your body is meant to do this and can, given the right support. I've had induced labor with no drugs, induced labor with drugs, natural labor twice as long as my entire induced labor- natural was 20 times easier- its all just about controlling your mind. It was one of the most empowering experiences for me because I'm not one of those people that control their thoughts very well. I tend to say whats on my mind and freak out when something happens I'm not ready for. It was incredible. Anyway, email me for more info on Dr. Sharp!

Congratulations on the pregnancy!! I am also expecting in September. I am currently going to the Foothill Family Clinic with Dr. Shayne Christensen and he is wonderful! This is my second child and having been with a different doctor the first time I much more impressed with my current Doctor. He is a very nice and upbeat person, always smiling and caring. He always makes sure he answers all my questions and concerns before ending our appointments. This pregnancy I had alot more trouble then my first with kidney stones, extream morining sickness, massive allergies, etc. and he has been great with me through the whole thing. I have been really impressed by him and would suggest him to anyone who is expecting. The Clinic is located just off I-215 East Bound. Here is thier address and phone number incase you are interested 6360 South 3000 East Suite 100 SLC, UT 84121 Phone: ###-###-#### Good Luck!!!
