Seeking Recommendation for a Good Vacuum

Hello, I desperately need a recommendation for a heavy-duty vacuum! I have 6 kids, and probably vacuum my living room, dining room, and kitchen areas at least 3 times a day. I have been averaging a vacuum a year, for about the past 5 years, and I must say I am a little tired of them falling apart so easily and having to buy new ones all of the time. Maybe I am just buying the cheap ones out there- or maybe it is because I like to suck up everything! Do any of you ladies have a recommendation for a heavy-duty vacuum, that will not fall apart after a year's worth of heavy use?

Thanks a bunch!

So What Happened?

WOW! I am impressed by how many of you recommended a Dyson! You know, I saw a Dyson commercial recently, and wondered if they were any good- well, now I know! I love the idea of purchasing one at Bed, Bath, and Beyond with one of their 20% off coupons! Well, now I cannot wait until my vaccuum officially dies! Watch, just because I want it to, it will last for another year, or something crazy like that!

Thank you all so much for sharing your vaccuum experiences and recommendations with me!!

Gratefully,
L.

I was buying $100 vacuums evry year or 2. Then I broke down and bought a Dyson Slim. We have a small house and no animals so the slim was the best choice for us. The canister isnn't as large, but it's easy to empty and I'm never far from the trash so that's not a big deal for me. It doesn't take a lot of room to store and the head is smaller so it can fit in tighter spaces. I only vacuum every 4-7 days. Since you use it multiple times daily, the large Dyson animal might work for you.

I would recommend a consumer reports subscription. They rate hundreds of house hold items and the information is available on line and in magazine.

I can recommend a vacuum, the best one I've ever used!! Its a Dyson, and I LOVE IT!!!!!!!! I got the yellow one from Bed Bath and Beyond and saved 20% off with my coupon. You won't be disappointed! It has awesome power, great reachability with its removable wand arm that stretches for ever, and its bagless! All you do is empty the dirt, etc into the trash. If you ever vacuum up a piece of lego or small part that you didn't mean to, this bagless system is perfect for retrieving what you accidently sucked up. I think it to does a great job cleaning up after 3 cats and 4 children, worth the price too! Lifetime Hepa filter guarentee, never had any maintenance problems with it either (2+ years of ownership, use almost every day).

Meg

Oreck!!! I vaccuum at least 2x a day and have for the past 3 years with no problem. They come with a manual so you can do simple repairs at home. They also come with a 7 year service garauntee. I love mine and can't live without it.

I have had the same problem with vacuums in the past- we were buying a new Hoover Wind Tunnel every 2 years, and they seem to be getting worse each time. We finally broke down and spent some money on a good one. We bought a Dyson Animal- the purple one with the rolling ball to make it easy to maneuver around furniture, etc. We bought it on recommendation of my neighbor who also has children, a long haired dog, and long haired cat. It picks up anything and has incredible suction. I can't say enough about this great vacuum.

Just like you, I've bought a lot of vacuums over the years, and they've all fallen apart. I'm putting in a vote for the Dyson, as well. I bought the yellow one a little more than a year ago, and it really sucks! LOL But I mean that in the best possible way! The wand arm really stretches very far, and the suction never diminishes. We live in an old house with 11-foot ceilings. I can reach up to the tops of windows very easily, or leave the vacuum at the bottom of the steps and vacuum all the way to the top, including landing and turn in staircase. I never have to move the vacuum because the hose reaches so far. It's super simple to empty. You basically carry the dust bin to the trash can, pull a trigger level, and the bottom opens dropping all the dirt straight into the trash can. And if you accidentally suck up something, you can easily see it in the bin and retrieve it. And that goes for even small valuable things, like my diamond stud earrings! It's not just brightly colored Legos that show up!

It's a great vacuum, and I think it was well worth the money. I also bought the small brush/wand attachment, which I use for cleaning the radiators in our old house. Wonderful!

Hi L.,

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend the Dyson. Mine is about 3 years old and it sucks up everything. it's really easy to take apart if something gets stuck in it. the only drawback is that it's pretty heavy (although i think there are newer, lighter models out now). i think it's great, never regretted buying it.

Hi L.!
I understand always buying a vacuum!
You probably pay nearly $80 - $100 per vacuum so it's worth the money to buy one that will last and like you said....suck up everything without breaking.
Buy the Dyson vacuum. My mom finally spent the cash and said her rugs look brand new every time she vacuums!
....geez and with 6 kids....legos and all! hehe
Have fun with your gang!
