My dentist sent me to a periodontist who recommended osseous surger (known as flap surgery) to clean deep roots on one side of my mouth under a root canal, Yikes!!
I have it scheduled (30 min. procedure) and am nervous.
Has anyone heard of this and can you ease my anxiety about it?
I am 50 (wow that looks old in print) and have an amazing daughter (21) and incredible son (11) AND a great husband.
Thanks for your reassurance in advance! :-)

If the dentist thinks this is necessary and the periodontist does too, then get it done!!! I do know that infection or decay can get to the bone of your jaw and you do not want that!!! So be comfortable knowing that this is a short-term discomfort to prevent a long-term problem.

Make sure that your doctor knows about your anxiety ahead of time and maybe he can do the procedure with you under general anesthesia (they put you to sleep completely). This would require someone taking you and picking you up and you would have the discomfort of the anesthesia wearing off, but you wouldn't be sitting there fretting about every push, pull and tug during the procedure. If your doctor doesn't seem concerned about it, remember even though you are only going through it once and it is scary to you, these guys do this kind of thing all the time! Good Luck

My mother used to have gum surgery often. You will be fine. I am so glad you are going to a specialist. This is an easy procedure. Don't be nervous. My son had something similar to what you are having. It was not a problem at all. Tell the dentist your fears. If necessary, he can give you some pain meds. I worked in the ortho feild for 18 years. Remember, the dentist does this every day. He is a pro. Good luck!

Hi D.!

I have been a dental hygienist for 9 yrs now. It sounds as if you're having some infection issues around that area or bone recession needing a graft...is that the issue? It sounds as if what you're having done is a standard procedure and it's done all of the time. You will be numb and the noise of the ultrasonics is the only annoying part. You may have soreness to the area for 1-3 days depending on how much they do, but they'll send you home with a prescription to help ease your soreness. I've seen this done a million times! So don't worry, it's a simple procedure and only hurts your wallet!
Good luck to you!
Jen

I had something like that done years ago. It was deep scaling where they went down deep to the roots and cleaned all the plaque. It went fairly smooth, no pain, i was nervous too, but had no problems. I guess i was about 45 when i had that done. My gums were sore for a few days, but that was to be expected. They can give you some pain meds if needed. You should be ok. They just numbed my gums for the procedure. Hope this helps and relieves you anxiety. I did a lot of praying first and the Lord helped me with my nervousness and like i said came through it really good. By the way, i am 56 now, so that really looks old in print. Oh well, i am blessed to be in good health. God bless you and have a great day!

Hi D.!

I am 50 too. My kids are 6 and 8 (old mom). Great husband too. I had a back tooth pulled a couple of months ago. It feels so much better now! I am sure you will be glad about it afterwards.

I am a teacher. My husband is retired and plays Mr. Mom. We like to camp. :)
