I don't have any answers for you, but I feel I was reading about my hair! I look forward to seeing what we both learn about what I have always called my "confused" hair!
Hello all! My hair is on the curly side in the back and sides, but straight in the front and top. I have recently gotten a new cut and am going to try to go curly with it. What are some products that you have found to bring out the curl? My hair is thick by has a fine texture. I have to be careful that products aren't too heavy for my hair, but at the same time they do need to have some holding power. Any help would be appreciated!

Your hair sounds similar to mine - thick, and curly in the back, but straight in the front. I have learned to embrace the curl instead of fight it.
I love Pureology Real Curl. It's pricey, but worth it. It's a lightweight creme. I put it in my hair when it's wet and let it air dry. So easy! And it doesn't leave my hair feeling crunchy, which I hate. Good luck!
definitely aveda be curly. it's natural, smells great isn't crunchy or sticky and will make your hair curl up and look great. I love their shampoo, conditioner and curl cream. my hair is curly when wet and then goes randomly straight and frizzy without product.
Hi there,
You may also try getting a Ouidad cut from the Styling Hutch - http://www.stylinghutch.com/ in Plano. I have thick Wavy hair but was skeptical that anything could help. I read this article on this salon that was trained in this technique and it really does make a difference. There are a few trained curly hair stylist there, but I really love Dee. They will cut your hair to work with your curl and teach you how to style it using products specifically for your type of curl. It is awesome. It changed my outlook on curl! Good luck!
I also highly recommend Ouidad (www.ouidad.com) for products designed only for curly hair and The Styling Hutch in Plano (SE corner Coit/Legacy -- talk to Claudia) for hair cuts. They are the only Ouidad certified salon in the state!
Hello, fellow curly girl!
I have thick curly hair, so I don't have to worry about products weighing my hair down, but I would recommend you try any of the products for curly hair by TIGI. They're more expensive, but you can find them at Target and the grocery store. I love the product Curlz Rock...it's a cream, but if it's too heavy for you, just water it down a bit. You might also try any styling mousse created for curly hair as it'll be lighter than the creams or gels.
Also, I've found that any shampoo or conditioner by Back to Basics (especially the Raspberry Almond) works great on my hair. It's not too heavy and it doesn't leave any heavy residue. They also have a curly shampoo that's pretty good.
Good luck!

There are products by "Cat Walk" for curls that are great!!!!
Bumble and Bumble has a product called Curl Creme and it absolutely works. My hair just has body to it and it makes it look like curls. They actually have a whole line to make your hair curly. It is the best!
Another vote for Ouidad products. Go to the website at Ouidad.com and check out their products based on your hair type. I will tell you going to the salon(Styling Hutch) in Plano is worth every penny.
I use Tresseme's curling cream through out my hair, then use a little Tresseme mousse after that. I let it air dry for a few minutes, and then blow dry with a diffuser. It will hold all day for me. I have just started using hair spray to set it some. Good luck.
My hair is naturally wavey and fine. It's not very thick, however. Bumble and Bumble makes a line of curling products (shampoo, conditioner & curl creme) that works really well. If you want something inexpensive, however, Herbal Essences makes a line of products for curly/wavy hair, and they actually work pretty well for me. For the cost savings, I can live with the fair results. I also recommend a shorter cut. I just recently had my hair cut to chin length, and it has so much more life and curls up really well. All I do is wash and go now. No drying and styling is necessary.
I use Curls Up by FX. WalMart carries it. It gives my curls definition without having "straw hair."
Last year, I tried switching to more expensive products from a salon (my WalMart briefly stopped carrying Curls Up). I tried three different expensive products, and never was satisfied with what they did. My last time there, I told the sales people that I had gotten some more of my Curls Up, and so I was going back to that since it left my hair softer than their products did. They couldn't believe that I had gel in my hair (all three of them even came over to touch it)- I think I made believers out of them, too!
There is a new Kerastase salon that just opened up in the historic square of McKinney, Texas. It is 209 Downtown Salon & Spa and is located next door to the Londoner. I work in the spa and have heard rave reviews about the Kerastase products, including a special line for enhancing curls. The stylists are wonderful and I'm sure they would be happy to answer all of your questions. The front of the salon includes a retail area where you can purchase products and they usually have samples if you'd like to try something. Be sure and take a look around if you stop in because the remodel of the building is just spectacular and includes three floors.
Have a blessed day!
Hi K.,
My daughter (4.5 yo) and husband have super curly hair, so I had to get an education on how to care for the stuff. A curly friend, who had read the book _Curly Girl_ recommended the following:
do not wash too frequently (2 x per week for most curlies)
do not use a strong shampoo
never blow dry
Then my sister recommended products from the *Deva Curl* brand. My daughter and I couldn't live without this information. It has returned the fun of bathtime. You can find the products easily online. They are a bit expensive, but last forever! I have used the no-poo, low-poo, MistHerRight, AnGell, and a couple of others. They also smell divine!

I like FX Curl Booster. There is a serum and spray that work great together and leave my hair feeling soft, not crunchy.
Aussie Scrunch spray(purple can) works well for mine. I flip my hair over while wet and spray it first underneath and then all over the other side. I blow it dry on low. Using a diffusor helps also. Hope this helps.
I cannot say enough great things about OUIDAD. Check it out at www.ouidad.com. They also have amazing haircuts! There is not a certified salon in the metroplex but if you ever venture to a city that has one, check them out. Totally worth the $$$!
At ouidad.com they have a product profile you can complete and it recommends what products to use and also what to ask for at your hairdresser to get a great haircut.
Hope that helps! :)
I have the same type of hair - curls in the back and on the sides, mostly straight on top and in front, and thick but fine hair - and am just learning how to deal with it (I had straight hair until I hit 30 and had a baby). The lady who cuts my hair told me your cut makes a big difference - a bad cut requires more effort to make it look good. She also told me that leave-in conditioner really helps. Most days I brush my hair after I get out of the shower, rub in Pantene leave-in conditioner, and then scrunch/mess it up a little, and that's it. Looks young and trendy, but can be more mature if necessary, it takes almost no time to do, and it's totally touchable.
I use Suave curl scrunch mousse. Don't use gels, for me even the ones that say for curly they are too heavy. I have the best luck when I don't blow dry. Comb/brush out when wet, apply product, scrunch and seperate hair a little. Leave alone till dry. Then shape and style, I use a light weight hairspray to set. I haven't tried any curl shampoos or conditioners. I have embraced my curls since having kids and now not having a lot of styling time. Hope it helps!
Aveda! Aveda Aveda !!
Fellow Curly-headed sister!! I have to say I love the Aussie curly line of products. They are inexpensive and I have used them for years for my fine but fairly thick curly hair. The mousse is very light, which I apply to very wet hair, gently scrunch, and dry slowly with a diffuser on the end of my hair drier. Then toward the end of the drying process, I use their Sprunch Spray for extra body and to style it into place. I find the key to getting mine to go into big, soft curls (and not frizzy, tiny curls) is starting with it very wet, and gently scrunching it, and drying it without "messing" with it too much. Allowing the curls to stay "together" if that makes sense. GOOD LUCK!!
my 12 year old had long (like down her back) - thick straight hair - then she cut into a little angled bob - now it is CURLY!! She uses a pick when she gets out of the shower and a product called Sunsilk Waves of envy - it is a gel spray type product - she sprays it in and scrunches her hair - it is so cute!!!
One thing that helps me with my curly hair, is after I rinse out the conditioner, to NOT squeeze out the water and apply Bumble & Bumble creme(or whatever product) to hair. This really helps keep the curl w/o the frizz.
One of my hair dressers told me first and foremost, don't brush your hair. Use a big tooth comb or a pic when it is wet, spritz some fructis curling gel on it, scrunch and you're done.
K.,
TIGI products, found at your Toni & Guy salons and other beauty stores, will bring out those curls. Products like Curls Rock and the Foxy Curls, which are among the Catwalk line. These salons know how to deal with the curls, they runway it worldwide.
Best wishes!
You should try Dead Sea Spa Care's Moisturizing Hair Cream. It works GREAT!! Helps bring out the natural curl, while leaving your hair soft and shiny. You can order it online at www.deadseaspacare.com
"Scrunching Mousse" by Suave. I was so happy to actually find this - because it works!
Hi K.,
I have natural curly hair too (one with its own mind!)...i love paul mitchell mousse! I beleive the bottle says medium hold but it holds. All of the paul mitchell mousses are great!! it isn't heavy or leaves your hair crunchy. Give it a try!
I have naturally curly hair and I have found that the best stuff I have ever used is Pantene Curl Defining Mousse. It works best for me! Give it a try. Put a good amount in, scrunch for a few minutes and let your hair air dry. Dont mess with you hair once its dry either or the product will start to loose its hold. I have tried many others like Herbal Essences, Loreal etc but they all make my hair go POOF! lol good luck!
Round trip by Paul Mitchell
you can find it at Ultra
I love Be Curly by Aveda!
The best thing to bring out the curl is to NOT blow it dry. I let my hair air dry and then I shake it out and apply something to it so that it doesn't look messy. But, my hair is super curly, so I am not trying to bring out the curl as much as tame it.
I have used TiGi as well and like it. I also like the Aveda "go curly" product...it is very light weight.
Best of luck!
hi K.
i absolutely LOVE victoria's secret line "so sexy"...in particular the styling mousse and wave enhancing spray! Both have conditioners in them so they wash right.. out no problem!....plus they are light weight!!!

I am a hair stylist and try Redken product for enhansing curls, it a mouse.
A defuser on the end of a hairdryer works great. But do your research and get a good one and/or get a recommendation from your hairdresser. Some items are just tools and not an actual defuser. Its awesome.
Hi K.!
Redken has a great line of products for curly hair.
Good Luck!

The curlisto product line is great! It's very light weight because it's water based not oil based which also helps your hair stay clean longer. It holds really well too! I've tried TONS of different products in my 30 years of dealing with my course curly hair and the curlisto products are by far my favorite!
Good luck!
Tiff
Redken Soft Curls I try other things but still end up going back to it. I prefer the mousse because my hair sits close to my scalp - it's very heavy and thick and the mousse gives the body at the roots. I also LOVE Kersatase but the price tag $32 for an 8oz bottle of shampoo is SO not in my budget (I get my hair cut at a Kersatase salon and just enjoy the pampering LOL).
Take a look at www.naturallycurly.com for ALL the info you need....quick quiz to determine the type of curls you have and products best suited for it, along with so much more.
I've embraced my curls and realized I have more curl than I thought, so chances are, with the proper care you do too. Have fun!
I would like to recommend my hair stylist. She is excellent and does a lot of corrections and the type of work you are looking for. She also knows hair and will not tell you to do anything to hurt your hair. She's been doing hair for 18 yrs. and also used to teach color for Loreal for 6 yrs. Her name is Conni Adams and even though she has a Ft. Worth cell number she works in Dallas. her phone number is ###-###-####. T. O'Connor
John Frieda's Dream Curls is a great product... it has no alcohol which is a plus since it doesn't turn crispy or dry out your hair. I apply it wet and just scrunch,,, it pulls the curls up like crazy. It can be found in anywhere like walmart or grocery stores even. If I need more holding power I just layer some of his styling gel for curls and I'm good for a long time.
I have curly hair as well and it's quite tempermental because mine, too, is so fine.
I have had really good luck with the curl enhancing products by Pantene. I've tried super expensive stuff and super cheap and this seems to work the best for me. They have a cream that is great!
Best of Luck!
