I am looking for a pediatritian in the midtown area. I'd be willing to drive a little further for the right person, but it has to be in MO. When I took my 4 mo old to his appt there was a problem with his insurance. When I asked how muh it would be just to pay for the appt and shots they told me $600 for the shots and over 400 for the doctor's time. He is perfectly healthy, so they weren't doing anything special. I really feel like this is wrong, so it's time for a change. I'd appreciate any referrals.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate all of the responses. Choosing a pediatritian can be so daunting, so suggestions from other mothers makes me feel a little more focused.
We got the insurance straightened out andWilliam did end up getting his shots. He only cried for a couple of minutes and that was it. I feel so fortunate that he doesn't have bad reactions.

I've brought my son since he was born, to the St Lukes family care which is located on the plaza (it's off of JC Nichols) He goes to Dr. Heimes. They're great there. They have a whole team of peditricians. You could try them, the number there is ###-###-####.

I have an 8 month old and also go to Pediatric Associates at 44th and Broadway, across from St. Luke's. We see Dr. Holleman who is wonderful, but have heard great things about all of the dr's. They also have great after hours and weekend hours available. Dr. Holleman's nurses are wonderful!! Being a first time mom, I call them all the time and they never make me feel incompetent or that I am bothering them. Their number is: ###-###-####. Good luck.
Hi K.! I have several children (5!) but when my older 2 were babies and going through all their shots I really wish someone had told me about this. For well-baby checkups and shots contact the Jackson County Health Department. They run well-baby clinics and immunization clinics, and I believe that they are free or if not free they are very inexpensive. The nurses that run the clinics are so helpful and nice and while it's a bit of a wait at times it's really worth looking into.

As for a pediatrician, I have used the same pediatrician group for my children for the past 18 years. Cockerell & McIntosh Pediatric's group. They have offices in Independence near the Englewood area and Blue Springs. My oldest child is 20 and youngest is 2. I absolutely love them and the best thing is that my kids always loved going to their appointments, even the regular checkups, they actually looked forward to them which says a lot about them to me.

Unfortunately, it is the patient's responsibility to check that their insurance covers the doctor's visits. I know in the pedes office where I work, the cost for a 4 month appointment is around $$420, and that includes imms and the dr. visit. Everyday we get patients that will come in with an insurance plan we don't file for or have stopped filing for. Be sure to always check and double check that your plan is accepted with a practice.

My daughter is three and we have been going to Pediatric Associates at 44th and Broadway since she was born. She sees Dr Moylan, but I have never heard anything but positive remarks about the entire practice, there are several docs.
Hi K....I know you asked for a Pediatrician but I would also like to suggest a Family Practice physician to you. Dr. Darren Killen at Brookside Family Medicine owns his own practice and is the only physician there...so you see the same doctor for every visit. The lobby usually only has 1 or 2 patients because they run on-time and the wait is never very long. He has the ability to see the entire family and is very good with kids. It works well because if Mom and baby have a cold he can see both of you at the same office. His practice has quite a number of Brookside and mid-town families that just love him. His office does same-day scheduling and they open at 7am. He takes his own call after-hours and is very accessible to his patients. If you want to give him a try the office number is ###-###-####
We use Dr. Jeffery Waters with Pediatric Associates located in the Broadway Building 1 block west of Saint Luke's Hospital (approx. 44th and Wornall north of the Plaza). I have several friends who use various doctors in that group and all are pleased. They offer walk-in hours and weekend-end emergency appointments.
