Does anyone knows a local pediatrician (anywhere in DFW area) that is familiar with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, specifically someone knowledgeable about the research of Dr. Kenneth Fine? We used the testing offered through the Intestinal Health Institute and our pediatrician accepted the results, but it is extremely frustrating that he knows less about the topic than myself. There are related disorders associated with the genes for celiac disease (such as diabetes, seizure disorders, other auto-immune diseases, etc.) and I would really like a pediatrician that knows more about this topic than I do or is at least willing to discuss this with me and learn.
On a related topic, I wanted to share with the group that Dr. Kenneth Fine of the Intestinal Health institute will be speaking in Lewisville (hosted by the Flower Mound Gluten Intolerance and Food Allergy Support Group) this Thursday, Jan 11th. He is a world renowned GI researcher and this speaking is part of the Public Service that he performs on behalf of the non-profit institute he founded: http://www.intestinalhealth.org/Public%5FService/
There have been several queries in the past on this list related to the gluten-free diet and folks dealing with Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia, so I thought this talk would be of interest to some of you moms. This talk really will be useful for anyone that is dealing with a chronic illness that results in inflammation. Diet can be an extremely important tool in symptomatic relief. In the case of auto-immune reactions to gluten, the gluten free diet can make a world of difference in long term health and wellbeing.
Here's the details:

Please contact me if you have any questions - my family and I have been following the gluten-free diet for over 3 years and it's made a huge difference in the health, wellness, behavior and growth of my two sons. I also have several auto-immune diseases and my doctor is amazed at how well I function - I believe it's in large part to following this sort of diet. Even folks that are just looking to lose weight might want to listen to Dr. Fine, as celiac disease is now considered the most common auto-immune disorder, yet it is highly underdiagnosed. There's an estimated 2+ million people with the disease that have yet to be diagnosed.
I agree that Dr. An is an excellent doctor. Any doctor in the practice knows a lot about celiac disease. This is a group of pediatric gastroenterologists which could be a better option than a pediatrician.
My son has asthma and it seems like the pediatricans try to over medicate him and only make him worse. I take him to his pulmologist and he is better in a few days.

I don't have the name of a pediatrician for you, but I do have a couple of contacts that may be able to help you.
M. Hunt, owner of FM Specialty Foods (in Flower Mound), has celiac and so do her three children. She may be an excellent resource for you. Her number is ###-###-####. www.fmspecialtyfoods.com is her website.
Dr. Jack An is the pediatric gastroenterologist that M. referred us to see. He may be of some assistance to you. He is at Medical City, Pediatric floor, ###-###-####.
Best of luck to you! My mother has celiac and so far my son and I have tested negative for this. It is more common than most people realize.

My friend has celiac, so I am almost positive she can give me a name (I'll message you when I get a response from her). But our pediatrician has something on his website, so I'm not sure how much he actually knows. It wouldn't hurt to contact him. He's in Southlake at Cook's Children's. His website is www.rogerknapp.com and it has all of his contact information. Send me a message if you'd like the name of my friend's dr. She just had a baby a little over a year ago, so I know they've had to keep her baby under watchful eye about celiac.

If you are not happy with any of the suggestions here, you might call on the help of your pediatric endocrinologist - or call Childrens Hospital and ask for referals. Ped. Endocrinology will diagnose celiac (my dd was tested for it) and they should know of local pediatrician who deal with patients who follow restricted diets such as yours.
