Tiffany,
I have the Mirena and I love it. I got it back in January. I did bleed for the first two months, but since then hardly at all. I am doing better on this than with the pill. I hope this helps!
I'm considering Mirena or Paragard as a form of birth control however I'm not sure which one to go with. Mirena has hormones and Paragard does not. All advice/experience is greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I have mirena and so far have had very good luck I like the lack o worry and that I barely even get a period but can't speak to the hormones but it's working great for me!
I have the Mirena and love it. I cramped for about 5 days and spotted for about 6 weeks and that's it. Now, I cramp for 4 hours and spot for 1 day and then its over. I don't even know it's there. It has a small amount of progesterone hormone released so it's like being on the minipill they say. No weight gain, no PMS at all. I would say try it and if after a few months it's not what you want, have it taken out and then try something else. Good luck.
I worked for gynecologists for years. This was never any of their favorite form of contraception. You can find people with no problems, but my experience was that many had heavier or more painful periods and some had nightmarish problems I won't go into. Consider carefully all the risks as well as the benefits, most people look at benefits only because promoters of the product downplay the serious risks. Also, in truth, if an egg is fertilized, then your baby will most likely be aborted, without your ever knowing one existed. I could not take that risk. That is the idea of the IUD. Unless you use the one with hormones, you still ovulate. Please talk openly with your doctor about all your options before you make your decision.
Good luck!

I had the Paradard for about 3 years before we conceived our second child, and I really loved not having to think about contraception. It was uncomfortable when it was inserted, but it was quick. Having it out seemed easier.
I did have heavy periods and cramping for the first several months, which I guess is normal. But my periods have seemed heavier since having kids, so I'm not sure how much of that was due to the IUD or just my body changing.
I liked the Paragard because there were no hormones to interfere with my normal cycle, so when we were ready to conceive a second child, I knew when the time was right and was pregnant right away.
Hope this was helpful...blessings!
Hi Tiffany, I use the Paragard, I have had it for 4 years now and I have not had any problems. It hurt when the dr. put it in but no other pain/side effects since. Also, no pregnancies! I think it is great and recommend it to anyone.
Good luck-R.
I don't have any experience with either, but have heard horror stories about the Mirena. Weight gain, neurological problems, migranes, etc... Please do research on both before you come to a decision. Best of luck with whatever you choose.
I have the paragard and it works great. I didn't want the hormones in my body because regular birth control tends to make me a little crazy. I've had mine for almost a year and have had no problems at all.
I have had the Mirena for just over 2years and love it compared to other BC... Although the 1st 2 months I hated it I bleed and had bad cramping for about 3 weeks 1 week off then 3weeks again...
But after those first months it was fine..My husband does complain that he can feel the little wires durring intercourse and sometimes I get cramping...But have tried other BC and this has been the least side affects for me.
Hello, I have the Mirena and I love it. no weight gain, no problems and so far only very light periods. I had the 10 year IUD and was miserable I thought I was bleeding to death. Ruin a lot of clothes. I have had the Mirena almost 2 years and I swear by it. I am very fertile and have tried all kinds of BC this is the best. I am 32 and married (8years) with a beautiful 7 yr old daughter, however no plans for another and the Mirena works! I don't worry about the what if's anymore. Good Luck and god bless.
I have 2 friends on Mirena. One got headaches in the beginning. Both seem to like it.
I had the paragaurd put in when my daughter was six weeks old and opted to have it removed eventually because of the EXTREMELY heavy periods. I'm talking seven days long. Four of those days with a heavy flow. It didn't bother me that much at first but after several years I got sick of it. I now have the Mirena which causes your period to go away completely and I LOVE it. I was worried about the health implications of not having a period but my doctor told me that not only is it okay to not have a period but it actually prevents cervical cancer. Having used both I definetely prefere the Mirena.
