I plan to start college next semester. i have never been to college. i am interested in obtainining a nursing degree. i am a single mother of 2 boys. i know i need to apply for a grant in january and take some intro testing. i just do not know where to start , i went to tcjc to speak to a counselor, he seems unhelpful. does anyone know a great way to start or who i can go and talk to. like maybe an intern school, that supports nursing?

I am single mother as well and will be graduating for my MA in Jan and I have spoken to Brookhaven College which I know they have a great nursing program and you DO have to take your prerequisite classes before you get accepted to the nursing program which you have to pass at a min 90%.

Good Luck.

I don't have any college or nursing info, but I wanted to invite you to a group I started online: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DFW_single_moms/

You can take the Accuplacer at TCC to place you where you need to start with your generals. I don't know how close you are to TCC Northeast campus, but the registrar's office there is very helpful and very friendly. Don't bother with the counselors until the testing center requires you to go to them, which will be once after taking your placement test, to discuss what basics you may have to take depending on placement scores.

TCC has a great nursing program, but it is highly competitive. I'm not sure when their cut off date is for applications into the nursing program, you may can find that on their website www.tccd.edu and pick a campus, click on Degrees and Certificates, and then on Assoc in Applied Science: Degree and Cert. Plans, then scroll down until you see Nursing. They have descriptions for the program.

What you will most likely have to do if you choose TCC is take a semester of generals(check the nursing program and choose classes that are required for the program but not specific to it, English, Psych, etc.), get a GPA for that semester, and then apply for the program the next round. That is what I'm doing with the Physical Therapist Asst. program since I've never been to college until this year.

Also, it may not be too late for Financial aid. I just started college at TCC this fall, and I didn't put in my fin. aid app. until about 2-3 weeks before the fall semester started. But you will have to fill it out online, or you won't have time to get it back. (www.fafsa.ed.gov) And even if you apply late, you can still get fin. aid, but you will have to pay registration and books up front, then get reimbursed with the fin. aid money.

Good luck! I have such admiration for those who pursue an education, especially after having been away from it for a while.

If you are planning on starting classes in Spring 2007 semester, you should've already applied for your pell grant. Might not be too late right now, not sure... there is a cut off though. I do mine at the first part of the year for the entire school year (i.e. 2006 - 2007).

I don't know how nursing school is, but I would think you have to take some kind of prerequisite like English 1301 or something... Did the counselor tell you about taking basics? That would be a good place to start...

I am a single mother too (of 3!!) and I am working on registering for Spring 2007 classes right now...
