Hello all,

We are looking for a place to board our dog for a week, so I am looking for feedback on places you may have used. We live in Auroa, so something close to that would be preferable. Also, we have never boarded our dog before, so if anybody can give me a ballpark on costs for boarding, I would appreciate it!!

Thanks,
D.

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the great suggestions. Since our dog isn't comfortable with strangers entering our home when we are not there, we couldn't go with the pet sitter option. We ended up boarding our dog at Apolda Kennels (http://apoldakennels.com/) which isn't far off Eola in Aurora. The price was really reasonable and she wasn't stuck in a crate for a week, they have kennels with outdoor runs, which I felt good about. I wouldn't say that they had the best customer service (they didn't ask about her feeding schedule, personality, etc. until we pointedly brought it up) but they weren't rude or anything. They just seemed ambivalent about us dropping our dog off, which seemed weird, because most people treat their pets like their kids.

I took my golden retriever to the Pet Hotel at PetSmart near Fox Valley a couple of years ago. It ran @ $25 a day if you don't want playtime, medication given, etc. They don't let the dogs outside, which keeps them from running away, but my guy is used to being outside some of the day. I now have used Belle Aire Kennel in Downers Grove (On Ogden between Highland and Finley/Belmont)a couple of times. They are terrific. They let me walk through the kennel area, showed me where the dogs exercise, explained how often they power wash the areas, etc. It runs @ $21-25 per day, (slightly more if a holiday is involved). I've run into people there who have been using them for years, and are extremely pleased. Good Luck!!

We live at 87th and Book Rd in Naperville. My son is ten years old and with my help he dog sits in our home. We have no pets. As long as your dog is house trained and is ok around children we can help you. I also have a two year old girl. My son does this for people a lot. He walks the dog twice a day, feeds the dog and plays with the dog. The dog sleeps in his room at night. This is how I am teaching him responsiblilty and he makes extra money for his video games. He is very good with the dogs. He charges $7.00 a day. It is like letting your dog become our family member for a week. Here is our home phone ###-###-####. Thanks, T. White

I take my dog to Paws and Time Pet Resort 1891 East Fabyan Parkway ###-###-####. Where ever you go you should go ask for a tour first. This place is great you can get private rooms or a kennel for the rooms with beds and tv it ranges from 30-45 a night with addt'l dog $15 The single sleeping rooms have cots food and water bowls and non breakable glass for visual stimulation. The suites have beds with bedding food and water bowls 14' tv mounted on wall, specially designed flooring for comfortable surface; rooms range from 8X10' to 14'X14' they encourage you to bring their toys, blankets and all is cleaned prior to check-out. They have cage free play and training with non slip floors Supervised indoor / outdoor recreation. Outdoor exercise area attached to the building and completely fenced in and supervised, daily swimming pools and a full doggy spa. Everytime I am there there is always at least 4to 5 people in the out side activity area and they are always playing with the dogs if you drive behind the building you will see the pool and where the dogs are allowed to play. I would call. They do a behavior testing to include agression testing with other dogs and people if there is agression they play more in a one on one with the dog. They want to see veterinarian records and the following vaccinations Rabies, Distemper,Parvo Birus Bordatella. Must be on flea, tick and heartworm preventative. Probide proof of a negative stool sample. I first I thought that was a lot but I would not want my dog to come home sick from another animal. I am glad they do it.

I own a pet sitting company and would be happy to work with you. We usually go to the house of the animal and watch them there to avoid the cost and stress of boarding. You only pay for each visit and the fifth visit is free. This way the dog stays in there own house and doesn't have to have needless boarding shots. If interested let me know.

We use the PetsHotel at PetSmart. My dogs seem to be pretty happy there. They go to the day camp every other day while they are staying there, which is an option. We've always been happy with it. My dogs are like my kids so I am very picky about where they stay.

My Riley goes to Belle Aire Kennels in Downers Grove and I would not take him anywhere else. We have tried several kennels over the years with our dogs and this is, by far, the best place we have ever gone to. Rye loves it and can't wait to go to "sleep over camp".. he sits by the car for a couple of days if I start packing his stuff early. They are friendly, attentive, unbelievably clean and, in my opinion, reasonably priced. Rye is a big dog, so it is 20.00 a night, but if you pick him up first thing in the morning, you don't have to pay for that day. I have referred several people there and I have not once heard a bad thing...I think at last count, I had 7 or 8 family and friends going there!
Tell them B. K sent you... Rye gets a free playtime then!!
Whatever you choose, good luck!

Hello.....Oswego Animal Hospital in Mason Square on the corner of Douglas and Rt 34 in Oswego does a awesome job. They have someone stay with them all night long. This is a vets office. So god forbid your animal get sick while you are gone your animal will get the medical care he/she needs. I dont remember the cost but it wasnt expensive at all and it was worth it for me knowing it was a vets office and my animals go there for all of there vet care and they are great. Good Luck

I have not personally used them, but I have heard great things about Katering Kennels in Lemont. They were even on the news sometime last year. Good Luck!

We have used Carvilla in Yorkville on several occaisions and have been satisfied. They also have doggie daycare so if your dog is social you can pay a few dollars extra per day for your dog to play outside with a selected group of other dogs. I think the cost was somewhere around $20 or $25/day. You bring your own food/treats and any comfie items your dog might want like a bed or blanket.

D.- What ever you do please do not bring your loving friend to the dog spot in Downers Grove. My dog Buddy was there in August and caught kennel cough, and they didn't even contact me to tell me he was sick. They sent me a letter after he was picked up. I know it doesn't make sense!! But that is what happened. I don't know of any other places to go though. So sorry I wasn't a help!!

Hi D.,
There is a very reasonable place in Orland Park (Orland Park Boarding Kennels) - it's not big by any means but it's on a large lot and the dogs are put in their own runs and are rotated to be able to run outside on their own three times a day. Charges are based on the size of the dog and I have a Rottweiler and so our cost was the highest at $18 a day - like I said very reasonable. While it's not much to look at, my dog came back after being there for over a week and was amazingly calm and was happy as a clam. We've had bad experiences at other places so I'm always worried about where to leave him - this place was great. Google them and you should be able to find the website!

The kennel we use is in Carol Stream. I know that is probably too far though. It's called Happy Paws Pet Resort. The name was so adorable, I had to try it. It was quite inexpensive (to me) and you can get add ons for your dog (Kong with PB, extra yard time, personal play time and walks, etc - $1 here and $2 there but it's totally worth it). The kennels are large enough and my dog has always done well there. Even my dad's scaredy cat dog did well there (well aside from the crying but she does that at home too - she is a nervous nelly for some reason - a big, fluffy, 85 lb nervous nelly if you can imagine that!).

I wish I could be of more help but I heard PetSmart's kennel is really nice. Maybe there is one by you.

Good luck!

Hi D.,

Have you thought of having someone come into your home? The cost is probably around the same. I have paid for boarding at a day care facility (where they are out the entire time except for the night) about 45 for a 24 hour period. Some places that charge less but only crate the animals in a large area and take them out a few times a day. It also may depend on the size of your dog.

I have used Scratch and Sniff Pet sitters (also on Mama source) and was extremely pleased with Elisabeth. I included her link below.

We use Pet Smart's Pet Hotel. What we like best about them is that there's someone there round the clock caring for the dogs. You can even call and talk to your dog if you wish. For med/large dogs they get their own room. They also offer plenty of add ons such as special treats and play time in their doggie day care program. They also give you a daily ledger of their day just like day care programs for your kids. We've used them about 5 times ranging from 5-15 days and we feel they're worth every penny.

I am a pet sitter in the aurora area. If you are wanting to board I refer all my clients to Petsmart hotel. It is very nice and clean. You have different rooms to choose for them. You can also call your dog while you are away and talk to them.
Its around 30 a night.
Or you can give me a call and maybe I can help you out.
