Is your lefty having trouble learning to write and cope with living in a right-handed world?

I am left handed and LOVE it!
I am sad to say that neither of my children are...
no advice here, but to embrace it :)
Your lefty must be a lefty only. My sister, brother and I are all left handed - both of our parents are right handed so go figure I guess :) But none of us had difficulty. I think it is because we only wrote with our left hand and did most other things with our right. If yours can't use both hands you may just need to practice more or try seeing if your child can be right handed for certain things and lefty to write with. Two of my three sons are lefty and so far the only thing we have to work on a lot is practicing handwriting. Lefty's can be VERY sloppy :)
Best of luck!

Its funny to me as to why it would ever be an issue with someone who is not left handed. Whats the big deal, really? When I was little, I had an aunt who thought there was something "wrong" with it and use to remove my crayon and put it in my other hand, LOL. I actually write and eat lefty but throw a ball with my right. I have never had a problem living in a "right-handed" world.
Hello A. ,
My son is 4 years old and he is a lefty . He has never had a problem with it . When he was months old I knew he was a lefty . I remember my monthr-in-law telling me well you can train him to be right , I was very mad and told her , He is lefty and I wont change that , that is him , He is writting well for a 4 year old , You just need to work with him/her .
My daughter (middle child) is the only lefty in our home. She was very promenant lefty from very young. Luckily she has had some great teachers. When she first started preschool we made sure all the teachers there knew she was a lefty. She is proud of the fact and makes sure she shares that.
Her kindergarten teacher was also left handed so I think that helped quite a bit as well. She didn't have trouble learning to write however she doesn't get A's in handwritting either. Its the only grade she gets a B in and it drives her crazy. My dad is left handed and has helped me help her on some things. For instance any letter that is round like o c e etc.. she starts at the bottem and makes her circle clockwise instead of counterclock wise like we do. But she has learned what she needs to do to make her letters correctly even if she writes them differently.
My aunt (on my moms side) is also left handed and she has the most beautiful handwritting ever.
I don't think my daughter has any major problems with being left handed (arguing with her T ball coach that she was not holding the bat wrong was kinda fun to watch) and infact we usually forget that she is. She just is who she is and does things how she does them!
Hope this helps:)
What exactly are you having problems with. My son is 8 and is also a lefty, but I cant say he has any kind of problem.
What kind of issues are you seeing your child have? My son is 5.5 and his left hand has always been his dominant hand, even as an infant. He struggles with writing some of his letters but we just pay special attention to those and practice them more. Otherwise, his being a lefty is not different than him having sandy brown hair vs. blonde.
i am left handed, i remember having a hard time with my letters, for me it was a b and a d. what i did to fix it was to make them capital, even in the middle of the word because it was easier to tell them apart.
I am left-handed and it appears my 2 1/2 year old daughter is too. She holds her pen / crayon / marker in her left hand and also uses it to hold her fork or spoon (when she uses one!). I hadn't thought about her having issues with writing in the future because I didn't (any more than any other kid in K). The one thing I remember is that my teacher in K would turn my paper to be up and down whenever she would walk by my desk. You see, I write sideways, with my paper at 90 degrees, and always have. Not sure why. Everyone who sees this thinks it's so funny and a great feat, but really it is the only comfortable way for me to write. So my advice is to notice different ways that he does things and discuss with the teachers that you don't want his natural way of expressing himself (in relation to his left-handedness) to be altered or discouraged. Oh, and get him lefty (safety) scissors - the ones for right-handers hurt our hands. I remember that too!
My 9 yr old daughter is a lefty, we knew very early on. My mother was born a lefty and was "trained" to be a righty. I can't tell you the problems that brought. Not only did it make her feel there was something wrong with her from birth, but it is proven that it can scramble up their brains and they find it more difficult to translate their thoughts into actions, it's like they have to translate from their left hand to their right. It was very frustrating for my mom. My daughter didn't have a severe problem, she would get her ds & bs confused sometimes, but she never had to place her paper at odd angles of hold her pen in a strange manner. We just kept practicing and she's fine now.
Hi A. - my middle daughter is a lefty, she is 11. What kind of issues are you dealing with? The only thing my daughter does is her writing is teeny tiny and I cannot read it easily, other than that she is a honor roll student. I'm just glad that the school did not discourage her leftiness. I am ambidextrous although with writing I use my right hand as it is quicker.

My son started Kindergarten this year and is left handed. He had a hard time at first copying the letters. Everything he would write would be backwards. I talked to his teacher and our dr and they both said it was normal for the first few months, but if it went on for longer than that, that dislexia might be a problem. He has been doing much better writing his letters and his name. Only once in a while will he write a letter backwards now. Hang in there and keep him practicing.
Your "lefty" is a genius. Let him/her draw to hearts' desire!
