My 6 month old ( will be 7 months the 4th of July) is extremly constipated. We went to the Dr. twice already and he keeps giving her stool softner. I give it to her twice a day and still her poop is hard as bricks. I'm also doing prunes and karo.. I had to give her a baby sepository 2 weeks ago. So sad! I hate seeing her in pain trying to poop!

What can I do next?

Hi

I always give mine prune/apple juice. Works every time!! I get the small bottles (Gerber). How much milk is she drinking a day? My youngest did this and I'd give her water to drink while I fed her solids, but the juice really works good!
Good Luck, Sydne

We got W. I. C. for each of my grandchildren. The people who run this program are "professionals" so I tend to trust them. A 6 months old baby gets baby juice, dry cereal, and formula. Your child is old enough to be drinking juice regularly. Make sure she is getting plenty of fluids.

I think the formula needs to be changed. If you are breastfeeding then there is really something going on because breastfed babies are rarely constipated.

Here is a link to my absolute favorite website. I have every one of my grand kids listed and I get so much great information from this site. Baby Center is awesome for any issue.

Oh, B., it's been a while now, but ours had constipation issues for a while. It seems to me that we kind of pedaled her legs while she was on her back just to get things moving. If she's crawling she's probably getting enough exercise, but I'm thinking she might be not quite crawling yet? It seems to me that we gave her a little bit of water during the hot summer too, but I think you have to be careful w/that. You don't want water replacing food either. Good luck. It will pass (no pun intended).

B.,

My son was having the same issue also. He is 8 months. I called the doctor and they recommended apple juice. They said that babies can have 1oz per every month of age, so since my son is 8 months, he can have 8oz. I did this for one day and he went perfectly. Then I went back to watering it down, and he started to become constipated again. So I gave it to him for a few days and it helped, however he started getting a slight diaper rash, so I give him about 70% apple juice and 30% water, it's working great. I have also been giving him yogurt, which I heard helps with constipation and that is working well too. However, your daughter may be too young to eat yogurt so you'll have to check with the doctor.
I did have this problem a few months back when he first started solids. I had a different pediatrician at the time and they recommended karo syrup, but I did some reading up on it and I decided against it. They say there is a risk of botulism.
As far as jar foods go, sweet potatoes, prunes, pears, apples, bluberries, are all good foods with fiber. Just remember the three day rule.
Good luck, I hope you have a happy pooper soon!

do you mean karo syrup? If so, stop! Babies shouldn't have honey or corn syrup before age 1 because of the risk of botulism.

Try giving her a bottle of water or very diluted apple juice every day.

Did this start with solids feeding? Make sure to offer your baby water after every solids feeding.

I am amazed that your doctor didn't tell you this. But I guess I shouldn't be. Doctors don't seem to know much anymore.
