It's painful but livable. Go on the website WebMD then put in osteoporosis. The drs. will tell you everything. They have the up to date information to help you out. Good luck grandma. It's not easy over 60.

I also endorse Cod Liver Oil as you will get a healthy dose of Vitamin D3 which is needed to assist in the absorption of calcium. D3 is the key, other forms of D are good, but not as effective. Also, a calcium citrate supplement(double check this, but I believe you can and should take about 1,500-2,000mg's/day) And YES, strength train. I'm a personal trainer and latest research says you need to lift weights heavy enough so that you come to muscle failure in 8 reps or less to really build bone mass. I would suggest starting on machines as they are safer. Later you can progress to free weights and other forms of training. Let me know if you have more questions! good luck.

I can give you more information on Shaklee's calcium if you would like. Their vitamins and supplements are made to be very bioavailable and get in the bloodstream right away or basically they guarantee that they will actually work and benefit you. A lot of cheap things out there don't do much for you unfortunately. Email me for more info or you can check out my website at www.shaklee.net/kim_oneill.

Hi N.,
Have you ever tried strength training? It's one of the best things you can do to help osteoporosis and prevent it from getting worse. Of course, there are medications, diets, and supplements that help, and you should follow your doctors' advice.
Strength (or resistance) training does work. One of our members who had osteoporosis joined last January. Her tests results showed a steady decline in her bone density. She started on our program, and within 5 months, her bone density had improved for the first time in years!
We are located in Hoffman Estates, so I don't know if you are close or not. I know that women don't usually turn to strength training, but I would suggest that you give it a try, no matter where you live.

Hi, Congratulations on a wonderful family!
When my son broke his hand last year his doctor told me to have him take fish oil tablets then he said for me to take them also I was rather surprised! I take a One a Day fifty plus vitamin, too. It's never too late for doing something about Osteoporosis. I am fifty one and my mother had osteoporosis so I am searching for the answer myself. The fish oil (cod liver oil-uk sounds bad) is very affordable and we find it all over the place although I bought it at the hospital pharmacy near where we go because the surgeon insists on them selling it there. He said it strengthens the bones. You can't completely get rid of it from what I understand but you can help it to not get worse and maintain your good bones and health. By the way, you will feel good, too. I also asked the pharmacist about taking extra vitamin c's which seems to be good for everything and he said it doesn't hurt taking them on top of the vitamins. I can't believe I am taking these but I would like to live a long time so I could enjoy some grandchildren!

N.,

Osteporosis runs in my family, and I was diagnosed a year ago with osteopenia, which is the beginning stages. I was only 36. Since I lost both my ovaries to cancer, I was at greater risk because of the early menapause. I have been seeing an endroconologist for a year, and it turned out that part of my problem was a vitamin D deficiency. Your body has to have vitamin D in order to obsorb calcium. My suggestion to you is to make an appointment to see an endroconologist ASAP. This can be turned around, but you have to see an endocronologist who will probably put you on prescription vitamin D, and have you take a certain amount of calcium every day. Another thing that helps is doing weight excercise. If you need a suggestion for a doctor, I see Dr. Deherara-Codo in Naperville. She is affiliated with Edward Hospital.

Good luck to you. Please take care of this immediately, you owe it to yourself.

If you need any more info, I specialize in women's health and wellness as well as teach an online course in it. One of my sections includes osteoporosis including diet and exercise recommendations as well as conducing one on one women's wellness consultations.

Nordic Naturals makes a fish oil called Ultimate Omega with Vitamin D, it top grade fish oil, one of the top 5 out there on the market. You will need a supplement of Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc, you need all three.

Other good food sources of Calcium is spinach, kale, almonds, arugula, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and the list goes on...all the stuff we love, right? :)

Circuit Training exercise is going to be the best, anything that is weight bearing, long sessions of cardio will not be as effective. One study just published plyometrics as another good form of exercise for osterporosis, however, you should be exercising for at least 6m before attempting plyometrics and need a qualifed trainer to help you out. If you need info on where to get one, I may be able to refer one to you, just depends on where you live.

Let me know if you would like anymore info, feel free to email me personally.
