My son is 5 yrs old and for the past yr or so he has been complaining of his legs hurting him. It will keep him up at night for a couple of hrs and then he will go back to bed. I have been thinking it was growing pains. But for the past month my son has been sick first with bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infection and now he just broke a fever of 103 that he's had for he last 4 days. I took him into the doctors and we went to get blood work done and his white blood cell count was low. At this point we are waiting until wed to check them out again to see where they are at. Oh an his fever has broke but he's still not feeling good. Has anyone had his problem with their child if so could you tell me your story and what it ended up being?

What can I do next?

My son had this, and it ended up that he had mononucleosis. His white blood cell count was low for about 6 months, then at his last check up it was normal again. It freaked me out because I thought of leukemia and stuff like that. The doctor told me the white blood cells can be depleted after a severe virus such as mono.

My daughter had this when she had a cold (that turned out to be a more severe virus) and then received a few vaccinations. Her blood count was very low. I went online and found that there are a lot of foods that help boost the white blood cell count. One of them is shitake mushrooms which I cut up into small pieces and started shoving in everything - like hamburger patties, tacos, etc. There are other foods and supplements/vitamins. I gave her a bunch of them and in two weeks her white blood cell count was normal! The docs told me that during the two weeks of waiting to redo the blood test, I needed to keep her healthy...that another illness would be very hard on her.
Hope this helps.

A low white blood cell count can mean something as simple as fighting off a sickness to things much more concerning. I have a low neutrophil (part of the white blood cells) count and I have had that for as far back as I have medical records. I was monitored for months about 15 years ago and even had a bone marrow biopsy to see if my marrow was producing the right number of cells. In the end, my marrow is functioning properly but I don’t have as many neutrophils in my blood stream as I should. They call it benign because I don’t get sick often –and just looking at my blood – I should – the white cells fight off infection. So I guess low is just my normal…. It just makes it tough when a doc wants to do a CBC diff and make any sort of diagnosis. Good luck to you and your son!

Not with my child, but with me. I had a very low neutrophil count at one point. It turns out that this is a common effect of many viruses. My count stayed low for about 2 weeks after the virus symptoms went away, and it's been fine ever since (that was years ago).

In the meantime, during those 2 weeks when the count was low, I had about a million other tests because my doctor wanted to make sure it wasn't something more serious, because a low WBC count can be an indicator of many many things. I also had blood draws every other day monitoring the count. So don't be surprised if your doctor takes this very seriously just to make sure your son is ok and it really is just because of his recent virus-caused illnesses.

I would expect it to be low during an illness. Get at checked again. Chances are it will be close to normal or normal. How low was it.
