my car didn't come with a gps system and being new to driving in the area, it seems like having one is a necessity - does anyone have a recommendation or a steer clear? thanks!!

What can I do next?

This may or may not help -- my dad is a truck driver and SWEARS by his Garman (sp?). Since he's on the road so much with no access to computer/internet (he's kind of computer backwards), he is not able to do updates very frequently. He had a Tom-Tom. And step-father-in-law had a Tom-Tom. Both crapped out just outside the warantee. =(

Hope this helps - A.

My husband bought be a TomTom for Christmas and I LOVE it. Being a new mom, I find myself going to new places all the time (playdates, children's stores, local libraries, etc.), and my GPS has become indispensible. No more printing out directions from Google and trying to read it as I drive. The directions are very clear, and even if you take a wrong turn, it gets you back on track almost immediately.

Hi E.,

My husband always wanted a Tom Tom but my brother suggested a Garmin because it was much better. Sure enough, my husband bought the Tom Tom, hated it and now has a Garmin which he loves! And I love it too since I steal it all the time!

Before I got my Magellan for my birthday, I thought what's the real purpose? I could just mapquest it. Well, I absolutely love it. Mapquest can't re-route you if there's a detour, and it can do a whole host of other things, too. I can't say enough about it. It'll definitely come in handy if you're new to an area. Anyone I know who has a GPS system has the Magellan, so I really can't speak for any other brand. Good luck.

Just know that all gps systems have their gliches. I have a
Magellan RoadMate. Got it for X-mas and so far, so good. Give it a look see on line and see if you like it.
