Hi Moms, I'm a mom to my son Jake who will be 3 in two weeks. I'm also legally blind and hard of hearing. Just recently I realized that my son is becoming so active and loves going outside. Because of my disabilities, I'm very nervous about taking him out alone. I was thinking of getting him a part-time home-maker who can help me watch him. I'm looking for the ones that accept medicaid. If you know how or where to get a home-maker, please let me know. I love in Jackson NJ, so it would be better to have the service in ocean county NJ. Thanks in advance! A.

What can I do next?

Hi Angel,

A home-maker is usually someone who performs maid type duties like cleaning the house, doing laundry and cooking. They are not for watching children. It sounds like a mother's helper might be a good solution for you. A mother's helper is usually a high school student who comes to "babysit" when you are home - leaving you some time to do something else. In your case, a mother's helper might be able to go with you and Jake to parks and other outings.

I looked at your other posts to see that you have been struggling with this for awhile. When you take Jake for his 3 year appt with the pediatrician, please ask them for any suggestions/ideas. Your pediatrician should know what services are available in the area. I really liked the bell idea that a previous poster gave you and hope you followed up with her. Another idea is that when you are out and about on public transport, use a child-leash. I did when my son was that age and I don't have any disabilities other than age!

NJ is known to have very good services for those with disabilities. My aunt has a son with cerebal palsy and she moved there because of all of the services available.

Best wishes, you are an inspiration! C.

A homemaker is someone who stays at home caring for their own house, not a professional. If you are looking for a housekeeper/nanny/companion and you require someone who accepts medicaid, you are best off going through an agency. Not knowing exactly what you would be looking for or what types of professional agencies would take medicaid, I can't really advise you there, but if you have a caseworker, they should be able to let you know what type of services your disabilities entitle you to. I don't know whether medicaid pays for services that are not directly related to your healthcare.

You should qualify for a home nursing program if you have medicaid it would be paid by them. I worked as an aide for a couple of years and I did all kinds of jobs.

One thing though. Since you are disabled they may be able to get some help so you can take Jake to a child care setting during the day sometimes, I would be getting him signed up for Head Start ASAP too. He needs to be able to go and play in a safe environment. They are based on income and most people are approved but it's almost time for them to start taking applications. If they get enough and fill up they don't make more classes, some just don't get in.

I would seriously consider getting a service dog. It would be great for you both. If you can't afford one, (I have no idea how much they are), perhaps you could get one through a charitable organizaiton?? Could family help with the initial cost?? Good luck to you! I have 2 boys and can't imagine trying to keep up with them without seeing and hearing well.
