Seeking Family Friendly Resorts Within Driving Distance from DFW

My husband and I agreed to take a vacation this summer, but with flights as inconvenient and costly as they are, we decided to find something within driving distance of the DFW area. We'd like a place that offers family-friendly activities and could possibly provide a babysitter for a night out with just me and my hubby. We'd love some sort of camp-like activities for our four-year-old son.

My husband's suggested we try to find something like the resort you saw in Dirty Dancing--don't know if those places exist anymore.

Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great suggestions!!! My husband found Barton Creek in Austin--one of your suggestions apparently led him there. There's lots to do, camp for our 4-year-old and babysitting for our 1-year-old.

I appreciate all your help!

The Westin La Cantera in San Antonio is absolutely great. The Hotel is gorgeous and the pool are is beautiful and fun. They have a kids camp there and after hours babysitting. You will love it. Then there is always Carnival Cruises out of Galvaston. Camp Carnival is great! The kids have so much to do and the have a blast. Babysitting late nights is no problem at all. There is lots for you to do as well. The best time to cruise is later in the summer. Prices really drop in Aug.-Oct. Call Carnival directly to get the best price. Samantha Peart at ext. 85370 is wonderful.

Hello R.
My husband is currently in Iraq on a 15 mth tour and he is coming home on R/R in August, and due to the high prices all around, we are also going to do the same.

I found 2 resorts in Texas off the Hyatt website

http://lostpines.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp
http://wildoakranch.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp

When you check the websites, look at the pics... they have a lot of different activities for adults/children, including water slides.

I am also looking in to a beach house in Galveston.
Pointe West Condos have a really nice beach club that you have access to when you rent a condo. Bike Trail, Fishing Pier, Kid Pool, Adult Pool, etc

Hope this helps!

We took a family vacation to the Marriot Resort in HorseShoe Bay last year and it was FABULOUS! There is so much to do on sight - there are 4 pools(3 family pools), 3 golf courses, tennis courts (like 15 or so), a putt putt course, hiking trails, a beach, jet skiing, sunset boat rides, a spa (fabulous spa!!) there are 5 restaurants on site and they do have activities for the kids and babysitting services. It was a blast! We were there for a week and could have stayed for a another week or two! There was so much to do and the resort was GORGEOUS! I highly recommend family vacations there. We stayed in a suite, but I have been there on a girls weekend and we stayed in an upgraded corner room and it was quite nice. Have a fun family vacation - where you may go!

We love to take our kids to San Antonio and stay at Hyatt Hill Country or Hyatt Wild Oak Ranch (this one is a timeshare so it might be more expensive to stay). They have tons of activities for your children and it so much fun. You really don't even have to leave the resort. It is just minutes for Sea World if you are interested in taking the kids.

There is Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine that just opened. There is also a place called Pine Cove, in Tyler, TX (2hours East). I have heard many moms talk about Pine Cove. There are family and kid camps available. Not sure about babysitting for either of these, but I've heard good things about both of them. You could also look into camps around Possum Kingdom Lake. My parents used to take me there when we were little. We went to the state park and they have cabins to rent. At dusk you can go out into a field by the lake and the deer will come and eat right out of your hands!! I always loved that, even when I was a teenager. I look forward to taking my boys there soon. Anyway, I hope one of these may work out for you. Good luck!!

I just went to Great Wolf Lodge last weekend and it was sssoooo much fun. They have everything there and you never have to leave the hotel. They are the hotel that has the indoor water park!! Very kid friendly but they do not have babysitting. But they do say to ask someone at the front desk and they might have ideas on babysitting. The lodge is right across the street from the Gaylord Texan. My husband and I cant wait to take our 3 year old back again sometime in the fall. You really should check it out!! Hope this helps!!

While it's not "in" Texas, it's pretty darn close...about 2 hrs drive from DFW, you could try Lake Murray in Oklahoma. You can either camp out or rent cabins on the lake. Haven't been in years, but I fondly remember swimming, skiiing, playing tennis and there is also horseback riding in the area and Turner Falls...great place to cool off & wade in a natural setting. It is probably alot cheaper than most other places, since it's not new or en vogue (ie theme-park type hotels like Great Wolf). I just remember having fun when I was a teen many years ago.
