We are going to argentina and uruguay in may. does anyone know if carseats are required by law there? Do there cars/taxis have latch systems? we will most likely be getting in and out of taxis i would imagine. we have a 4 year old who we are not sure how this is going to work. we want her to be safe, of course. But is there something out there that is convenient, easy to install, and easy to carry around? I heard about a vest-like device, but i dont know how secure and good that is, plus i have never ever seen one on a kid before. This is our first time abroad in which we will not be renting a car the whole time. I would appreciate any advice on this topic. thank you!

So What Happened?

Thank you to those of you who responded and tried to help me! i looked more into that safety rider vest thingy and it looks pretty good! i think i might try that. but now i have to surf around to see what kind of taxi cars they drive in buenos aires and montevideo to see if they have shoulder/lap seat belts and/or lapbelt with a tether latch behind the seat. That will determine my purchasing it. Thanks for the support and please continue to respond if you would like to add anything else to this. i love advice! anyone been to B.A. or montevideo recently??

i looked around on the internet. is your daughter in a booster seat? i found one site that had a car seat, high back booster on wheels so you wouldn't have to carry...

i'm sure there are alot of options. you do not have to put a carseat on the plane. that i know. you can use it as baggage and check it in. we took my daughter and her car seat in the plane on a family vacation and that was just crazy. the isles are just impossible and people are rude. it's not a legal thing. taxis' i'm unsure of. but i'd want one for safety reasons... look for a small booster that's light weight or one that you can roll per the link up top. good luck and i hope you have a great vacation!!

I was looking into this a little for a similar situation and found some good-looking travel seats that seem like they would be easy to carry around and install in planes and taxis, but don't know anyone who has tried one. Anyone got any references?

We are in London right now for a few months for my husbands job and you are not required to have a car seat in taxi cabs. We also were in Washington DC and did not need it there as well. I have a 4 year old as well and he did just fine in a seatbelt. Booster seats without the back are very easy to carry around if you are worried.

FYI - carseats are not required in our country on public transportation, which includes busses, taxis, shuttle vans, etc. - anything operated for commercial or public purposes. You can just hold your child on your lap (think about taking a shuttle bus from an airport parking lot to the terminal...) So, I doubt that South American countries would have more extensive regulations that we do. But, to make sure, you should probably go on-line to that country's website, or get a Lonely Planet - they're great travel books generally, with lots of excellent information about not only local customs and laws, but places to see and things to do. Enjoy your trip!
