We too, put the gate high enough for the cat to get under but the baby can't, not that she didn't try real hard a few times. We really had some laughs at the dog and the baby trying to get under it as easy as the cat does.
Hi everyone! My almost-8-month-old daughter just started crawling (wheee!) and we're baby-proofing our living room to give her some space to crawl (up to now she's only been allowed on the floor in her tiny bedroom.) The doorway between the living room and kitchen has no door, and I was just about to buy a pressure baby gate for the doorway to keep baby out of the kitchen when I realized that our cats (who have the run of the house every where but the baby's room) won't be able to get to where the litter box is if I keep a pressure gate there. Have any of you had this situation and if so how did you find a way to keep baby out of a room while allowing the kitties access? Many thanks in advance for any advice you have for me. *Peace*!

We just have a normal gate and have it raised about four inches from the floor. The cats crawl under with no problems and my daughter has never tried to climb under it yet and she's almost 2 now.
Yes, there is a very nice baby gate with a pet door and we are using it with our second crawler now. It's also very tall and I'm certain my cat couldn't jump it since it's at the top of the stairs. It's not cheap but very sturdy and worth the money.

I don't know about a pet door in a baby gate, if a cat can push through it so can a baby (at least my daughter would be able too!).
We just have a sturdy baby gate and our two cats jump over... most cats love to jump and will figure out how to get to food.
I have also heard of people leaving a small space under the gate for the cats to squeeze through. I never tried that, my guess it is only two inches (or the wedith between baby crib bars... any more the the baby might try to go under just like the cats).
Hi,
We used baby gates to keep my son in the living room when he was crawling and first walking as well. Our cat just jumped over the gate when she wanted to go from room to room.
google "pet gate with door" I've found many. They're advertised as a walk thru gate for dogs with a cat door, but they are tall and are the same as a baby gate.
Hi Melissa! There sure is such a thing, and I think the other moms have shown you the links. We had the same issue, but for us, the pet-friendly gates were too expensive! So we just put the gate about 4" off the floor. It let the cats scoot under, but wasn't enough that our little one could manuver under. Just an idea!
We have a walk thru on the stairs and 2 pressure mounted in door ways, they've always worked well for us. We have to take them down to let the dog through, luckily he doesn't jump them (he is much taller then them!) but our cat who is quite overweight jumps over w/out a problem. For awhile I would leave a space at the bottom so that he wouldn't have to but my son has decided he wants to be like the cat and crawl under. Good luck and congrats on crawling, soon you're going to wish for that baby that was in the same spot when you left the room and return after 30 seconds! :-)
Can the cats jump? We have a pressure gate that our two cats just jump over to get to their litter and food. We had to 'train' them on it when we first got it by putting chairs on either side of it so they knew what was going on and we gave them treats every time they jumped over, but they got used to it in one day. We've had no problems with accidents at all.
It also helped that we got the Safety 1st one that is solid, instead of the gates that have openings - then the cats knew it was a distinct barrier instead of them being locked out of the room with their litter and food.
I'd say raise t1he gate. If your cats jump, you could let them jump over it. I would make sure there is carpet or a throw rug for the cats to land on on the other side of the gate if you don't have carpeting on one or either side of the gate. Cats only need the room to fit that their whiskers will fit, as wide as their whiskers. Good luck!
Yes! They have them at Walmart and aren't to expensive.
Good Luck!
