I'm beginning to do the research on a vasectomy for my husband. Can anyone give me any advice or real life experience on this? I don't know anyone who has had one. Thanks so much.

There are risks of course, but it is a much simpler and safer alternative than having your tubes tied.

The only advice I would give is that if you really think you would love to have more children but money is standing in the way, I would wait. You don't know what the future holds money-wise and it would be a shame to have the vas and decided later that you can afford more children.

There are some long term options like IUDs that you could consider until you are truly sure that you don't want any more kids. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hi Doreen my husband had a vasectomy as well, and he also needed to take it easy for two days. He was fine by day four/five. As you know "some" men do not have a high pain tolerance so I would suggest that he take the prescribed medicine. The urologist also recommends a ice pack. But you will get all of the information about what to do when you go home. I beleive it's a good thing for men to do if you are not looking to have anymore children it saves us women from a lot more recovery. Good Luck!

My husband also had one done when our son was 1. The procedure itself was very standard, and he was down for the count for about 4 days. He still had some tenderness for about a week after that, but once the swelling went down, he was fine. If you're certain you're done having children, I highly recommend it. I love not having to worry about birth control.

My husband just had it done in August. The only advice I can give is to let him stay in bed or on the couch for 48 hrs afterward and let him be a baby. If he does too much too soon he can really hurt himself. My husband felt good the next morning, but he didn't do anything for 2 days, but play his computer. He also opted for being put under. His doctor gave him the choice of local or be put out. So you might want to consider this if he is at all scared of hospitals. Beleive me it is a piece of cake compared to having babies. I had 1 natural (with meds of course) and twins by c-section. His was a piece of cake.
