I'm sorry, but its simply not acceptable for your doctor to say he doesn't know what it is and then tell you an allergist won't help much. If he doesn't know what it is, how can he possibly know that an allergist won't help? Ok, maybe they won't, but you have to start somewhere. If you narrow it down from the allergist that its not an allergic reaction you can move to a dermatologist, a dentist etc. Since the Zyrtec helps, then you can safely assume that it is possibly an allergy and start there.

If you are on an HMO and need a referral to see a specialist, call the doctor and insist on a referral. If not, then seek one out yourself. I've worked in the medical field and believe me, doctors don't know everything and with many of them you have to insist on good care. Its not that they are bad doctors, its just that its not as much a priority to them as it is to you. You can bet that if the doctor was experiencing what you are, he wouldn't take "I don't know" for an answer. You don't have to be rude about it, but you do sometimes have to be assertive. Just say, "you know, maybe you're right, maybe the allergist won't help but this is making me miserable enough to try anything. So please, refer me to someone." I tell everyone, in medical matters, we have to be our own best advocate (and our children's.) Don't sell yourself short.

Don't listen to your doctor! See an allergist right away! They can help! I too get the itchy face, mouth, tongue and throat. Usually after I have eaten something. I now know I cannot eat citrus, bananas, watermelon and a few other things. Over the counter and prescription allergy meds don't help. I have to avoid these things. A food allergy may start out mild with itching of the mouth, but it can change to a more severe reaction without notice! Don't take any chances! Get to an allergy clinic right away!

I'm not sure where you are located, but I have had to get a second opinion on allergy issues w/ my daughter.

The Allergy Clinic of Tulsa..."Dr.Love" is supposed to be the very best in this area. I would consider trying there or anywhere if you're not in this area.

Hi L.

It sounds to me like an allergie of some sort. My sister has the same problem as far as the itch goes. She has tons of food allergies to things like citus (in fruits and juices), salad (mostly just the lettus itself), seafood, and eggs. She aways says as soon as her mouth start to itch she knows she can't eat that food again, and it has been as bad as her throat closing (that was with seafood). She too take a rx allergie pill very day because of the food allergies and all th junk in the air. My husband just read this and reminded he gets the mouth itch and swelling when he eats some differant types of nuts almonds are one he can't eat.

I would go see an allergie dr. for your own safty, and keep track of what you did or ate before it started. If I where you I would keep some liquid benadryl on and too. Just be careful and read what is in evrything you eat, drink even your tooth past.

Good luck

Hi L.,

Has the doctor mentioned anything about cranial nerves? I believe it is the 11th cranial nerve that controls that general region. You might want to suggest a referral to a Neurologist. I hope I am not scaring you. I just want to offer that little piece of information. Good luck and God bless!

Do you have any bumpiness on you face anywhere? I had a problem with a hormonal change in my body when I had a miscarriage in 1994 and I had just lost my grandmother whom I was very close to. My dr. told me is was due to hormones and gave me a cream to put on it. I then requested to go to a dermatologist after a week of it getting worse. I'm vain and I wanted it to go away. He said I needed to be on a low dose of antibiotic for 90 days as well as using the cream. Well after the first week of that it started going away and didn't itch anymore. Things have been fine since. Try a dermatologist in your network and see what they say.

It could also be a fungus, like one of the other ladies mentioned. If you don't like yogurt you can get Acidofolus (not sure of the spelling) in the vitamin section at a pharmacy. It's the same thing they put in yogurt and it's a pill. I take it when I have to take an antibiotic so I don't get a yeast infection.

Hope this helps!!

Hi L.,
I'm gonna say 1) you should seek an allergy speicalist in your area. 2) I would think you have an allergy to something most likely something you are eating or drinking or even something you are spraying. I would for the next couple of days monitor what you eat and see if you have the same symptoms appear. Also watch what you use everything and anything write it down and see if you have symptoms to anything. Other than this I don't know what else to say.
Hope you feel better soon, W.

has he checked for yeast? or a fungus? Ask for Diflucan and start eating 8 ounces of yogurt with active cultures a day to see if that helps.

You said you have some allergies to some medicines. You need to check what the common factor is in those meds. I would definately see an allergist. My mother had alleric reactions for quite some time. She noticed it with her meds but at times they would flare up even though she quit taking them. Come to find out her allergy is to a yellow coloring that is often used in meds and some foods. Just a thought. Good luck

If you live in the OKC area, the Oklahoma Allergy and Asthma clinic is great. They do an allergy test to find what you are allergic to and can put you on shots and change your medication. It helped my husband.

I don't know about the IUD but for the itchy face mouth and tongue I would recommend seeing a Traditional Chinese Medicine specialist. When I was 19-20 I had a weird condition where if anyone would touch me I would basically break out into a welt where the touch occurred. My doctor tried treating it as an allergy but that didn't work and he soon gave up and said it was psychological. Not buying that I decided to try something new (or old as the case may be) and found a TCM specialist within driving distance. He told me it was similar to an allergy but more subtle than that - in effect I was allergic to the things people carry on their skin that conventional allergy meds don't treat - including soap and lotion. He mixed up some powdered herbs for me to use as a tea. It tasted god awful (don't add anything unless they tell you it's ok and it usually isn't) but it corrected my immune system. Ten years later and I've never had a recurrence. I don't know if it will work for you but it's worth a shot. Conventional doctors have a tendency to think that if they can't solve it then nothing and no one can and that's just not true. Do some searching on the internet for a TCM specialist, that's how I found mine. Ask for references and good luck!
