A.. Some of the schools in the CPS system aren't so bad. You should get in contact with the Chicago Public Schools Options for Knowledge office. Their number is ###-###-####. Good luck.

Have you looked into parochial schools? Sometimes they are rather broad in their religious instruction, so many people are not offended by their doctrine. They really want to educate the children. Also, sometimes you can volunteer inexchange for reduced tuition. Maybe you could even get complete $$$ aid.
Good luck!

Hi A.--I guess I would just say, don't be so sure that you can't afford a better education for your child without leaving the city. My husband teaches at one of the private schools on the lakefront that costs $20,000 a year (!!!!!), but I know for a fact they offer several full tuition scholarships every year. I am pretty sure that all the private schools in Chicago (except maybe not Catholic schools, but I have no idea, they probably do I just don't know anything about them) offer a few scholarships per year, based on need. Now, it's not so easy to GET IN in the first place (regardless of money... they are selective and try to pick, each year, a diverse group of students in terms of background, scholastics, interests, etc), but it's worth a shot before giving up on the city altogether. I know that there are SEVERAL students at my husband's school that come from bad neighborhoods on the west and north side of chicago to come to school there every day, and they thrive.

hi A.
I don't know if this helps, but this is what my husband i did. Our son is only 3 wee sacrificed and moved to oak park so our child will have a better chance. We gave up some things but for my son it's well worth it.
